Red Sox, Yankees Will Make History by Both Starting Rookies in Winner-Take-All Game

When the Red Sox and Yankees played their most famous playoff series in 2003 and '04, Boston pitcher Connelly Early was one and two years old. New York pitcher Cam Schlittler, senior citizen, was two and three.

A generation later, both teams are electing to trust these youngsters with their playoff lives. Early, 23, will start against Schlittler, 24, in Game 3 of the American League wild-card series Thursday—making them the second pair of rookies to start against each other in a winner-take-all playoff game.

As Sarah Langs of MLB wrote on social media, the first rookie duo to oppose each other in that scenario were Braves pitcher Ian Anderson and Dodgers pitcher Dustin May in the 2020 National League championship series. Neither pitcher took a decision, but Los Angeles won the game 4–3 and went on to win the World Series.

Early's assignment is particularly shocking, as the Virginia product debuted in the major leagues on Sept. 9. Schlittler, who posted a 2.96 ERA in 73 innings this season, was one of the most productive rookie pitchers in baseball.

The winner of Thursday's showdown will advance to the ALDS to meet the East Division champion Blue Jays.

Javier Baez's Walk-Off Featured Epic Bat Flip, Saddest Reaction From Red Sox Catcher

Javier Baez lived up to his nickname, El Mago, on Tuesday night, as the Detroit Tigers outfielder created magic in the team’s 10-9 win over the Boston Red Sox at Comerica Park.

First, Baez belted a go-ahead, three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to give Detroit a 6-4 lead. After the Red Sox and Tigers traded blows in the top and bottom halves of the 10th, Boston once again jumped ahead and took a 9-7 lead heading into the bottom of the 11th inning.

Thanks to a leadoff single by Tigers infielder Jace Jung to start the inning, the stage was set for Baez, with Jung on first and the auto runner Dillon Dingler on third base. And Baez delivered, as he smacked the first pitch he saw from Red Sox reliever Greg Weissert into the left-field seats for a walk-off homer.

Perhaps El Mago's best trick of the night? An immaculate bat flip in which the lumber did a baseball bat's version of a handstand before gently tumbling back down to the earth.

And while that was happening, Red Sox catcher Carlos Narvez, who knew the ball was gone the second Baez made contact, was going through it in a demoralized reaction to the walk-off.

Baseball is the best.

£45k-per-week Leeds flop looks like their biggest disaster since Koch

How long will Daniel Farke be given to turn around the ongoing Leeds United mess?

After so much joy at Elland Road, Marcelo Bielsa was put out of his misery 26 games into the 2021/22 season in the Premier League, mustering up just a measly five victories.

By way of comparison, the German is only two victories away from matching that amount right now, with 15 fewer league games under his belt.

Of course, Bielsa was handed more time in the hot seat due to his iconic status in West Yorkshire, but Jesse Marsch was also given 20 league games the following campaign when the Leeds ship looked to be sinking.

A trigger-happy dismissal might not be forthcoming, then, but Farke will know he needs to turn fortunes around quickly, as a whole raft of players continue to underperform.

Bielsa and Marsch were no strangers, either, to players joining the Leeds ranks and ultimately flopping, with Robin Koch one costly error that must still generate grimaces at the Premier League newcomers.

The numbers behind Koch's move to Leeds

It’s fair to say there were an awful lot of misses in the transfer department when the South American and his Wisconsin-born counterpart occupied their dug-outs.

Faces such as Luis Sinisterra, Tyler Adams, and Rasmus Kristensen all joined for big bucks, and then disappeared when relegation was served up at the end of the gloomy 2022/23 season, with Sinisterra and Adams alone costing a whopping £41m to pick up at the time.

Thankfully, the bruised Whites managed to recoup £40m when selling the disappointing duo to AFC Bournemouth. On the contrary, the aforementioned Koch would return to his native Germany for zilch after a largely woeful three seasons in England.

In the end, Leeds were probably just happy to get their former £12m purchase off their roster, even if it was on a free transfer to Eintracht Frankfurt, with the German only managing to collect a dire ten clean sheets from 73 Premier League appearances.

Once branded as being simply “not good enough” by The Athletic’s Beren Cross and looking like a “fish out of water” by pundit Danny Mills, it really was a transfer saga that hurt Leeds, and it still does, arguably, considering Koch has since returned to his more well-known comforts of the Bundesliga and has excelled. This season, he has two goals from ten league appearances, winning a mighty 5.4 duels won on average, too, for Frankfurt.

For context, the no-nonsense Joe Rodon has averaged 5.3 duels won back in the Premier League, but he’s far from a transfer misfire.

Rather, it’s another expensive defensive recruit who could be deemed Leeds’ biggest disaster signing since Koch

Leeds' biggest disaster since Koch

The most frustrating aspect of Koch’s Leeds career, looking back, is that he had a promising debut campaign in West Yorkshire, even if it was ravaged by injury.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Only 13 starts came his way, but four clean sheets were collected, with a final day showing to close out the 21/22 campaign, even seeing him win seven duels against Tottenham Hotspur.

Unfortunately, Jaka Bijol can’t even cling to any early promise at the moment, having cost £3m more than Koch when leaving Udinese behind.

It should have been a giveaway that the Slovenian might struggle, considering Farke was hesitant to chuck the ex-Serie A titan into his starting XI at the start of the season, with the German eventually chucking Bijol into the Premier League deep-end against West Ham United in late October.

He did win six duels against the Hammers as Farke’s men got the better of their relegation rivals 2-1, but his showings against Brighton and Hove Albion and Nottingham Forest since must be leaving a similarly bad taste in the mouth that the German defender once left.

He found himself in no man’s land when Morgan Gibbs-White had all the time in the world to head home this decisive goal at the City Ground, with the out-of-sorts number 16 only managing to win one lacklustre tackle across both heavy away defeats.

The £45k-per-week defender will surely be fearful for his starting spot moving forward; therefore, as Pascal Struijk waits in the wings, with Bijol also yet to show off his prowess in the air, which saw him bag four goals for Udinese in Serie A action.

If Farke is to persist with Bijol, he could go on to be viewed as a Koch-type weak link for oppositions to hone in on, with a potential relegation on his CV also no doubt making him hard to shift for anywhere near his £15m valuation, like the forgettable 29-year-old.

He does still have time to turn around his Elland Road playing days, but the early signs are not good, as Leeds have been here before with a hyped up European import that never lives up to his high price tag.

Man Utd want to sign £35m La Liga star ahead of Barcelona, makes front page news

Manchester United are interested in signing Levante attacker Karl Etta Eyong, rivalling the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona for his signature.

The Red Devils are looking for a fourth straight Premier League win on Saturday afternoon, with their trip to Nottingham Forest giving them a good opportunity to achieve that goal.

For Ruben Amorim, it has been quite the turnaround in recent weeks, with the Portuguese under immense pressure before the victories over Sunderland, Liverpool and Brighton.

It’s now a case of United being ruthless, however, and getting the better of a Forest side sitting in the Premier League relegation zone, although it may be a slightly trickier task now that Sean Dyche is in charge at the City Ground.

The Red Devils’ new attacking signings have thrived so far this season, especially Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, but that’s not to say that added depth isn’t needed in that area of that pitch. With that in mind, the English giants have now been linked with a move for an exciting young player.

Man Utd want to sign £35m Karl Etta Eyang

According to a new front page report from Mundo Deportivo [via Sport Witness], Manchester United want to sign Levante star Eyong, with the striker also a target for Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Manchester City and Arsenal are seen as potential suitors for the 22-year-old, too, with the calibre of clubs keen on him outlining what a talent he is. He has a £35m release clause in his current deal for Premier League clubs.

Eyong is hot property for a reason currently, having scored five goals in just seven La Liga appearances so far this season, as well as being praised for being “on fire” by scout Jacek Kulig.

Man Utd also targeting a shock move for Vinicius Jr with price tag revealed

The two-cap Cameroon international is a centre forward by trade, and with Rasmus Hojlund potentially joining Napoli permanently at the end of the season, and Joshua Zirkzee’s future far from certain, the Levante ace could be considered strong competition for Benjamin Sesko.

United need to be in a position where they are signing the brightest attackers in the game, as was often the case under Sir Alex Ferguson – and if they managed to pip the likes of Madrid and Barca to Eyong’s signature, it would be a big statement of intent.

Kolo Muani upgrade: Spurs held internal talks to sign £87m "powerhouse"

Tottenham Hotspur made a fairly bold call in the summer when they decided to part ways with Ange Postecoglou after he won the Europa League trophy at the end of last season.

The Lilywhites ended a trophy drought that lasted the best part of two decades, but that was not enough to keep the Australian head coach in his post in North London.

They opted to go with Thomas Frank, who was poached from fellow Premier League side Brentford, to replace Postecoglou in the dugout, and he has had a terrific start to life at the club.

The Danish tactician led his side to a 3-0 win away at Everton in the top-flight on Sunday, which has left Spurs sitting third in the Premier League table after nine matches.

Two goals from Micky van de Ven and a late header from Pape Matar Sarr secured all three points for the Lilywhites on Merseyside, but it was not a perfect performance.

For example, the Spurs head coach may not have been entirely pleased with the performance of his starting number nine, as Randal Kolo Muani struggled.

Why Spurs need more from Randal Kolo Muani

The Lilywhites need to get more out of their summer signing from Paris Saint-Germain, because his performance against Everton was slightly alarming.

In his defence, it was his first Premier League start and only his second outing in the league for Spurs. However, he lost seven of his eight duels and took four unsuccessful touches from 15 total touches, per Sofascore, which shows that the striker struggled on and off the ball.

Kolo Muani needed to offer more of an outlet in the number nine position to take pressure off his team at times, as the hosts pressed for a goal but could not get past an impressive Guglielmo Vicario, and failed to do so, as James Tarkowski and Michael Keane found it too easy to get the better of him.

It remains to be seen whether or not Spurs will see major improvement from the France international during his time in North London, because his form across two seasons with PSG left a fair bit to be desired.

As you can see in the table above, Kolo Muani underperformed his xG and only scored eight goals in 36 Ligue 1 appearances for the French giants.

He did, though, score eight goals in 16 Serie A matches on loan at Juventus in the second half of last season, along with two goals in three games at the Club World Cup, per Sofascore.

Whilst Spurs are looking for more from their striker and hoping that he can channel the form that he displayed for Juventus, the club are reportedly eyeing a striker who would be an instant upgrade on him.

Spurs have held talks to sign new striker

According to CaughtOffside, Tottenham Hotspur are one of the clubs interested in a deal to sign Porto centre-forward Samu Aghehowa in the January transfer window.

The report claims that Spurs, Arsenal, Newcastle United, and Nottingham Forest are all showing an interest in the Spain international, as they look to bolster their squads.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

It adds that Porto have a €100m release clause, around £87m, in the marksman’s contract at the club, and they are not willing to allow him to leave for less than that figure.

CaughtOffside adds that Spurs have held internal talks over the potential of a short-term loan, for the second half of the season, with an option to make it permanent next summer, but the £87m valuation is a roadblock at this moment in time.

It now remains to be seen whether or not Tottenham will test the waters with a formal offer for Samu’s services when the January transfer window opens for business.

Why Spurs should sign Samu in January

Spurs should swoop to sign the Porto centre-forward ahead of the second half of the campaign because he could come in as an instant upgrade on Kolo Muani.

As aforementioned, the France international’s contrasting form for Juventus and PSG suggests that there is no guarantee that he will improve his performances and become a star for Frank in the next couple of months before the January window.

This means that the Lilywhites may get to January and realise that they need a consistent and prolific striker who can score them the goals they may need to win silverware, or to qualify for the Champions League.

Samu’s form for Porto suggests that he could arrive in North London to hit the ground running as a lethal scorer for Frank, as he has scored five goals in seven league games this season, per Sofascore.

The Spanish marksman also scored 25 goals in 41 matches for Porto in all competitions in the 2024/25 campaign, per Sofascore, which included six goals in nine appearances in the Europa League.

As you can see in the table above, the former Atletico Madrid youngster outperformed Kolo Muani at league level last season, with nine more goals and one more assist in just four more appearances.

Samu, who was described as an “absolute powerhouse” by analyst Ben Mattinson, has scored eight goals in all competitions so far this term, per Sofascore, whilst Micky van de Ven is Tottenham’s top goalscorer with five goals, per Transfermarkt.

This suggests that he would come in as an instant upgrade on Kolo Muani, whilst also solving a glaring issue for Spurs, because their centre-back is their top goalscorer heading into November.

Samu’s return of 33 goals for Porto since the start of last season shows that he can be a prolific and consistent performer at the top end of the pitch for Frank, whilst it remains to be seen which side of Kolo Muani will settle down in North London.

Over Van de Ven: 8/10 Spurs star is becoming Frank's most important player

Therefore, Spurs should be looking to wrap up a deal for the Spanish centre-forward when the January transfer window opens for business, whether that is an initial loan or a straight-up permanent move.

Wolves targeting Brendan Rodgers amid doubts about Vitor Pereira

Wolverhampton Wanderers are now targeting Brendan Rodgers as a replacement for Vitor Pereira, amid boardroom doubts about the Portuguese manager, who has made a very poor start to the campaign.

Indeed, Pereira is arguably fortunate to still be in a job, given that West Ham United and Nottingham Forest have already made changes, with the Old Gold sitting bottom of the Premier League, having failed to win any of their opening nine games.

Wolves have amassed just two points, which means they are currently six points adrift of safety, and the most recent result is likely to be particularly concerning, suffering a 3-2 defeat at home against newly-promoted Burnley.

Pereiera had to be dragged away from an altercation with the fans after the full-time whistle, before going on to urge the supporters to stick with the team in his post-match interview, saying: “We understand the frustration of the people and supporters but what I must say, if we fight united with them, we can win games and compete and achieve our targets – without them, it is impossible,”

“If we win two or three games in a row, things will change.”

The 57-year-old appears to be safe for the meantime, with the board not taking any drastic action after the Burnley defeat, but the club’s hierarchy are starting to have doubts about their manager…

Wolves targeting Rodgers to replace Pereira

According to a report from The Boot Room, Rodgers has now emerged as a target for Wolves, with the 52-year-old now available after resigning from his position as Celtic manager earlier this week.

Transfer expert Graeme Bailey adds: “Wolves, as it stands, are sticking with Vitor Pereira, but I understand the club’s hierarchy is split. Some wanted Pereira out after their weekend defeat to Burnley, so they are one to watch.”

As such, the former FC Porto manager may get a few more games to save his job, but if results don’t improve, the Northern Irishman could be brought in to replace him, having decided moving back to England is his “number one priority”.

After such a poor start to the season, the Old Gold may need a special manager to guide them to safety, and the ex-Celtic boss, who has managed 34 Champions League games, could fit the bill.

Gabriel Agbonlahor once lauded the former Leicester City boss for the work he did at the King Power Stadium, describing him as a “world-class” manager.

During his time with the Foxes, Rodgers, who often utilises a 4-3-3 formation, secured two fifth-place finishes and won the FA Cup, showcasing that he is capable of punching above his weight with a smaller club.

Despite signing a new three-year contract last month, there is only so long Wolves can stick with Pereira if results don’t improve dramatically, and the former Leicester manager could be the ideal replacement.

Spurs already have dream Son heir who's yet to play in the Premier League

Thomas Frank has made an impressive start to life as Tottenham Hotspur manager, suffering only one defeat within his first nine matches since his appointment in the summer.

The Dane’s only defeat came against Bournemouth in the Premier League on gameweek three and are now currently enjoying a six-game unbeaten run in all competitions.

However, it’s not all been straight-forward for the 51-year-old, with the Lilywhites having to come from two goals down to draw with Bodo Glimt in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

His side have scored 17 goals across all competitions in 2025/26, averaging nearly two goals a game to date, highlighting the impressive form of the side in the final third.

Such a record could’ve certainly been bolstered further had the hierarchy kept hold of one player who was sold during Frank’s first window in charge this summer.

Heung-min Son’s successful spell at Spurs

Back in the summer of 2015, few Spurs fans would’ve predicted the superb spell forward Heung-min Son would have at the club after joining from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen.

The South Korean spent a decade in North London, often being a first-team regular, subsequently racking up incredible figures which made him a huge fan favourite.

The winger racked up over 450 appearances between 2015 and 2025, scoring 173 times, which ranks him fourth in the club’s all-time goalscoring charts.

Despite not starting the Europa League final, he lifted the trophy as captain and helped end the club’s 17-year wait for a trophy in his final outing for the football club.

Son would leave the side this summer in a £20m deal, subsequently joining MLS outfit LAFC, leaving new boss Frank with the near-impossible task of landing a replacement.

Mohammed Kudus was brought into the club during the off-season, but his addition was undoubtedly made to strengthen the options on the opposite flank.

However, the Dane may already have his own version of Son in the near future, with such a talent already on their books in North London – potentially saving the club millions in the process.

The Spurs star who could be Frank’s heir to Son

Spurs have a number of impressive young talents within their ranks at present, highlighting the impressive work of their academy and their recruitment team over recent days.

Graduate Mikey Moore is just one of the players who has made the rise through the youth levels, making 19 senior appearances for the Lilywhites last season despite being just 17.

The injury crisis last season gave him the chance to stake his claim, but he’s been sent on a season-long loan to Scottish side Rangers in an attempt to gain consistent game time to aid his progression.

However, he’s only featured for a total of 215 minutes across all competitions for Russell Martin’s side, with just three of his appearances coming from a starting position.

He’s not alone in being sent out on loan to try and gain valuable experience, with South Korean forward Min-hyeok Yang also spending the 2025/26 out on loan.

The 19-year-old joined the Lilywhites from Gangwon FC back in January, undoubtedly being brought into the club for the future years rather than the present.

Such a deal was undoubtedly an exciting one, with the youngster scoring 12 times in his 38 appearances for his homeland club, prior to his switch to England earlier this year.

Yang would spend the second half of last season on loan at QPR, scoring twice and registering one assist in his 14 Championship outings at Loftus Road.

However, he was once again shipped out to England’s second tier, this time joining Portsmouth on a season-long loan, even netting his first goal for the club against Watford on Wednesday night.

Given his recent spells away from North London, he’s yet to make a single senior appearance for the club, but that could certainly change in the years ahead, given his tender age.

At just 19, Yang has plenty of time to live up to the potential he’s arrived with, potentially being the perfect option for the first-team off the left-hand side for many years to come.

Should he get anywhere near the levels produced by his compatriot at Spurs, it would be yet another phenomenal piece of business and one that could save them millions if he turns into a potential world-beater.

Arsenal intensify interest in signing "special" gem ahead of Liverpool

In a fresh battle between Premier League clubs, Arsenal have now reportedly intensified their interest in signing a teenage sensation ahead of the likes of Liverpool.

Arteta: Arsenal need to "respect" Saka's recovery

Arsenal couldn’t have entered the international break in more frustrating fashion, but they’ve come out the other side in fine fettle. Having suffered late defeat at Anfield and lost both Bukayo Saka and William Saliba to injury, the Gunners bounced back after the break with a convincing and near flawless win against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

Losing Saka was a particular blow however, and one that the Gunners will still need to deal with moving forwards, relying on the likes of Noni Madueke to continue to shine. Mikel Arteta provided an update on the fitness of his star man before Forest, stating that Arsenal must “respect” the recovery process and not rush Saka back before he is ready.

The Spaniard also provided an update on Kai Havertz, who suffered an injury blow in the early stages of the season: “He’s looking really good, he’s walking freely.

“He’s starting to load the knee and to do some bits. As I said before, I think we’re taking it from weeks to months. But knowing Kai, I cannot give you any time scale because I know what he’s going to try to do, same with Gabi Jesus. So I think he’s in a good moment.”

It’s these types of injury concerns that Arsenal have been building for, however, and the transfer market remains the key to a lot of their success. Get things right in that department and they may yet end their wait for another league title.

To that end, those in North London are already thinking about the future. According to reports, they’ve even gone as far as intensifying their interest in signing a teenage sensation.

Arsenal intensify interest in Mokio

As reported by TeamTalk, Arsenal have now intensified their interest in signing Jorthy Mokio from Ajax. The Gunners are joined in the race to sign the 17-year-old talent by Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United, but will be looking to deal their rivals a transfer blow by securing his signature at the first opportunity.

The third-youngest goalscorer in Ajax history, there’s no denying that Mokio is one to watch. The teenage midfielder, who can also play centre-back, was dubbed “special” by scout Jacek Kulig in February and it’s hard to argue with that statement.

Not Gyokeres: £60m Arsenal man could be a better signing than Wirtz & Isak

After Liverpool spent big on Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, an “Intelligent” Arsenal signing could prove to be the Premier League’s best recruit.

It would be a major coup if Arsenal managed to lure the Belgian to The Emirates in the near future.
