Sunderland star who "Jose Mourinho really liked" is now on borrowed time

Sunderland looks to have a tricky few clashes in store as they continue their return to the Premier League.

Thankfully, the Black Cats haven’t been paralysed by the challenges in front of them just yet, with Regis Le Bris’ men sitting in a pretty ninth spot in the early standings, after picking up an impressive three wins from their opening seven fixtures.

Still, a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester United last time out will be a worry for Le Bris, considering Chelsea, Everton, and Arsenal are on his team’s fixture list heading into the rest of October and then November, who are all above Ruben Amorim’s underperforming Red Devils in the division.

Further down the line, the Frenchman will also need to make some cutthroat decisions about who he keeps on past their contracts expiring, with many of his reserve personnel perhaps walking away next summer.

The Sunderland players now in danger of leaving

As a direct consequence of Sunderland splashing out over £160m on transfers in the busy transfer window just gone, many of Le Bris’ camp have now had to make do with limited gametime, despite once being important cogs in the Black Cats’ machine.

Indeed, despite only missing two Championship games last season during the regular campaign, Dan Neil looks to be running out of time now as his deal expires next June, with only one minute of Premier League action afforded to him so far.

Patrick Roberts was even sent out on loan to Birmingham City in the summer, as another figure that has dramatically tumbled down the Stadium of Light pecking order.

With a goal and assist already next to his name at St. Andrew’s, it’s clear that the 28-year-old still has more to give in the second tier, even if he has been deemed surplus to requirements back at his parent employers.

There is also reserve goalkeeper figure Simon Moore, who will surely be moved on soon, with Robin Roefs eating up all his potential minutes even more.

Before the Dutchman’s inspired arrival, the ex-Brentford stopper had only ever made six first-team appearances on Wearside, with his exit from the club presumably in the offing.

There is another figure who hasn’t been mentioned yet, who will also find it hard to make a pressing case to stay put, despite consistently shining when selected by Le Bris.

Why Dennis Cirkin is now on borrowed time

While Sunderland did break the bank this summer to prepare for their Premier League voyage, several of Sunderland’s promotion heroes have also stepped up to the mark, away from the disappointing tales of Neil and Roberts.

Wilson Isidor – who fired home a respectable 13 goals during their promotion heroics – already has three league goals to shout about, whilst Trai Hume’s fiery character in the Championship has been front and centre of his game in the top-flight, too, with the Northern Irishman winning a mammoth six duels on average across his seven outings in the demanding league, as per Sofascore.

One of Hume’s reliable teammates at the back in the EFL’s elite division in Dennis Cirkin, has failed to make the step-up look effortless, though, with the number three’s ongoing journey on Wearside marred by injuries once more.

Since entering the club as a wide-eyed prospect from Tottenham Hotspur in 2021, Cirkin has collected a standout haul of eight goals and six assists from 116 appearances, with his ability to break up the pitch with speed, matched by his Hume-like tenacity in defence, seeing him earn rave reviews in the past.

Indeed, he seemingly has “the potential to be a Premier League player”, according to ex-boss Tony Mowbray, who also noted that “Jose Mourinho really liked him” back at Spurs, amid his rise up the Lilywhites youth ranks.

He is yet to live up to Mowbray’s – and Mourinho’s – praise and grace the Stadium of Light turf in the Premier League, owing to more injury difficulties mounting up, with a concerning 67 games missed in total over the five seasons he’s been at the top-flight newcomers.

With a £20m price tag once above his head when at his Black Cats peak, it does look far-fetched that any club would want to fork out that lavish amount on such an injury-prone individual in January, even if he does have a bilstering strike up his sleeve when free from his demons.

Sunderland could, therefore, be staring down the barrel at Cirkin leaving for nothing when his contract ceases to be next year, with it a risk to keep such an injury-ravaged star around, in what would be a very sad end to the 23-year-old’s long-established Wearside affiliation.

Not Saka or Rice: 8/10 monster is now looking like Arsenal's best player

Arsenal’s Premier League title charge continued on Saturday afternoon, with the Gunners breezing to a comfortable 2-0 win over a struggling West Ham United side at the Emirates.

For all the difference in form and momentum between the two teams, the hosts may well have feared yet another slip up against the Hammers, with even Graham Potter having overseen a win over the north Londoners for the visitors last season.

Thankfully, there was to be no repeat performance this time around, with goals from Declan Rice – haunting his former side yet again – and England colleague Bukayo Saka proving enough on a serene day for Mikel Arteta and co.

That Three Lions pairing remain central to everything good about the Gunners, although there is a new contender quietly emerging to be the club’s most consistent performer.

How Saka & Rice stole the show vs West Ham

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Arteta chuckled at the memory of deploying a teenage Saka at left-back all those years ago, with Saturday having marked the Hale End graduate’s 200th Premier League appearance for the club.

The younger Saka was bright and exciting even at full-back, although the present-day version is a different proposition altogether. There’s just no stopping him when he’s at his best.

Having netted in fine fashion against Olympiakos in midweek, the 24-year-old got in on the act again after converting from the penalty spot to wrap up all three points, with the wideman stepping up to the plate ahead of summer signing Viktor Gyokeres.

That second-half strike had come following Rice’s fine effort before the break, with the marauding midfielder firing home on the rebound against his previous employers for his 17th goal for the club on his 113th outing. Remarkably, he only scored 15 times in 245 games for the Irons.

It wasn’t just that goal which was impressive about the Englishman’s performance either, with Rice also coming close to picking out that man Gyokeres, following a trademark surging run down the left.

That was one of three key passes that he provided in all, as per Sofascore, ahead of Saka’s own tally of two, with the compatriots once again showcasing their importance to this quality outfit.

Arsenal's contender for player of the season

Injury has hampered Saka’s impact thus far in 2025/26, while Saturday’s strike marked Rice’s first of the campaign, having been unable to replicate the heights of that night against Real Madrid last season.

Neither man has quite been at their brilliant best in the early weeks of the season, although one man who has put in stellar performance after stellar performance is Jurrien Timber, with the Dutchman simply a monster at right-back once again.

The man who earned the penalty which allowed Saka to convert on his milestone outing, the former Ajax defender was a constant outlet down that right flank, racking up 72 touches in total, while providing one key pass as he looked to impact proceedings in the final third.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Also involved in the build-up to Ricardo Calafiori’s strike in first-half added time, having combined nicely with Saka inside the area, Timber represents the perfect all-rounder, having long surplanted Ben White in that right-back role.

Adept in attack but also a warrior defensively, the Netherlands international again gave short shrift to the West Ham forward line, winning eight of his contested duels, including making six tackles.

A key cog in an Arsenal backline that simply loves to defend first and foremost, it is no surprise that the Gunners are now reportedly looking to extend his contract, having already secured William Saliba’s future this week.

As noted by the Standard’s Simon Collings, who dished out an 8/10 match rating, it was another ‘top performance’ from the £38m man, having now started all six league games since the opening weekend win against Manchester United.

Lauded by podcaster Adam Keys as having “quietly become one of Arsenal’s most important players”, Timber must surely be near the top of the pile when pondering the Gunners’ player of the season so far.

Chelsea agree record deadline day exit via award-winning agent Ali Barat

Chelsea look on course to agree to a dramatic late exit ahead of the Monday 7pm transfer deadline, thanks to super agent Ali Barat, who has brokered the transfer.

Enzo Maresca’s side, without a doubt, take this summer’s crown for most industrious selling club.

In total, Chelsea have raised around £310 million in player sales, having agreed the departures of Kepa Arrizabalaga, Basir Humphreys, Noni Madueke, Marcus Bettinelli, Mathis Amougou, Djordje Petrovic, João Félix, Ishe Samuels-Smith, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Armando Broja, Lesley Ugochukwu, Renato Veiga, Alfie Gilchrist, Carney Chukwuemeka and Christopher Nkunku.

Madueke, Amougou, Dewsbury-Hall and Nkunku’s departures have helped Chelsea to make room for new summer signings, which is crucial for the west Londoners to register their new recruits in Maresca’s Champions League squad, due to a complex agreement with UEFA.

Nkunku agreed to join AC Milan earlier this week for a fee of around £36 million (including add-ons), while Jackson was tipped to leave imminently this week by his own agent, Diomansy Kramara, in a public statement.

Now, the decision with hours to go looks like Nicolas Jackson will be a Bayern Munich player after days of back and forth.

Nicolas Jackson set to join Bayern Munich from Chelsea

The Senegalese is set to compete with one of Europe’s best strikers, Harry Kane, in a star-studded Bayern side who are favourites to clinch another Bundesliga title under former Man City captain Vincent Kompany.

On Saturday morning, Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg broke the news that Jackson will join Bayern on loan for £13m – a record loan fee – with an option to buy for around £56 million in 2026. The deal was helped on by Barat, who worked as a mediator between the parties, with the representative helping Chelsea trim their squad whilst also securing a mammoth move for Jackson.

At one point, after the injury to Liam Delap, the Blues wanted Jackson to return to Stamford Bridge. Instead, they ended up recalling Marc Guiu from Sunderland and now look on course to give Jackson his wish with a move to Bayern, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The 24-year-old bagged 13 goals and six assists in 37 appearances for Chelsea last season, including a strike in the Conference League final against Real Betis, but scored just once in the Premier League since the turn of 2025, with the Blues securing the biggest loan fee in football history for an out of form player.

Leeds sold "future £100m" star, now he's in danger of becoming Phillips 2.0

Leeds United have had to recover quickly in recent times when notable players have exited Elland Road.

Last summer, after heartbreakingly losing the Championship playoff final, the eventual promotion winners had to wave goodbye – through gritted teeth – to both Georginio Rutter and Crysencio Summerville as Premier League moves awaited the entertaining duo.

Not even the added security of being in the elite division has saved Leeds from having to part ways with some star assets, however, with Kalvin Phillips leaving his boyhood club behind for Manchester City in the summer of 2022.

Unfortunately, the one-time £40m buy has struggled ever since leaving West Yorkshire behind, but there might well be some green shoots appearing at the Etihad now for the forgotten midfielder…

Phillips' turbulent stay at City

Amazingly, despite last featuring for Pep Guardiola’s men way back in October of 2023, Phillips could now have been gifted a chance at redemption.

Indeed, it has emerged that the Leeds-born midfielder has now been included in City’s Premier League squad for the rest of the 2025/26 season, having presumably impressed in flashes out on loan at Ipswich Town last campaign.

It was far from a standout loan experience for the 29-year-old, but he did hammer home this effort at Portman Road during his 22-game stay to be remembered somewhat fondly, away from also winning 3.5 duels on average across his 17 Premier League outings in Suffolk, as per Sofascore.

While Guardiola’s surprise inclusion of Phillips will give the 31-time England international some hope that he can rewrite his City narrative, it’s far from being conclusive proof that he will start plenty of City games moving forward, having only ever completed a full 90 minutes in the Premier League for his current employers a meagre two times.

Phillips will just have to hope his ordeal in Manchester doesn’t get any bleaker, with a worry now that this other ex-Leeds ace is experiencing a similar fall from grace to that of the 29-year-old, as his first-team minutes also continue to be minimal in the tough division.

The ex-Leeds star in danger of being the next Phillips

Thankfully, for both the aforementioned Rutter and Summerville, they have taken to the pressures of the Premier League a lot more steadily than Phillips.

Rutter is already up to eight goals and five assists for his new employers Brighton and Hove Albion, whilst his Dutch counterpart has also managed to successfully battle back from injury difficulties at West Ham United to collect two assists during the infancy of the new season.

On the contrary, former Leeds homegrown product Archie Gray has found the leap from the EFL to the Premier League to be a daunting one, having moved to Tottenham Hotspur just last summer after a whirlwind ascent into the Whites’ first-team spotlight.

Daniel Farke, who still occupies the Elland Road dug-out, would be the first manager to get a tune out of the adaptable 19-year-old in the senior ranks, with Gray previously being branded as a “very intelligent” talent by ex-Leeds great Marcelo Bielsa when he was just 15 years of age.

He would be showered with further elaborate praise after making a name for himself in the first team at his boyhood club, as seen in Sky Sports’ Andy Hinchcliffe heralding the teenage sensation as “extraordinary” during his breakout 2023/24 season, which saw him make 52 appearances in total.

Missing out on promotion that same season, then saw Premier League clubs unsurprisingly line up for his coveted services, with the £30m eventually forked out by Spurs to land Gray not looking like a rash amount to spend, either, considering analyst Ben Mattinson was wildly suggesting that the 19-year-old could go on to be a “future £100m” asset.

At the moment, Mattinson’s praise hasn’t been backed up by Gray’s performances in North London, with new Spurs boss Thomas Frank only handing him one league start so far this season, having started 19 league contests under Ange Postecoglou. He wasn’t even named as a substitute for Spurs’ big 3-0 win over West Ham United, either.

It does feel now that Gray jumped ship from Leeds to pastures new in the Premier League a bit prematurely – especially as Farke’s men are now competing alongside Spurs – with an additional worry that the teenager is already being swallowed whole by the pressures of his top-flight environment, in a similar way to Phillips.

Gray will hope he can live up to his previous high praise down the line, but if his minutes continue to deplete, he might well just be viewed as another forgotten figure of Leeds’ past that struggled to cut it in the big time.

Stoinis makes shock decision to retire from ODIs, out of Champions Trophy

The allrounder has made the call as Australia’s limited-overs squad was due to head to Sri Lanka

Andrew McGlashan06-Feb-2025Australia allrounder Marcus Stoinis has announced his immediate retirement from ODI cricket, ruling himself out of the upcoming Champions Trophy.Stoinis, 35, will now focus on T20 cricket and remains available for Australia in that format. He scored 1495 runs in 71 ODIs at an average of 26.69 with a best of 146 not out against New Zealand in Auckland in 2017, and also took 48 wickets at 43.12 apiece.Related

“Playing ODI cricket for Australia has been an incredible journey, and I’m grateful for every moment I’ve had in the green and gold,” Stoinis said. “Representing my country at the highest level is something I’ll always cherish.”This wasn’t an easy decision, but I believe it’s the right time for me to step away from ODIs and fully focus on the next chapter of my career. I’ve got a fantastic relationship with Ron [Andrew McDonald] and I’ve hugely appreciated his support. I’ll be cheering the boys on in Pakistan.”Stoinis was part of the 2023 ODI World Cup squad and played an important role with the ball against Pakistan, when Australia began their fightback from a poor start to the tournament and ended it as champions.”Stoin has been such a pivotal part of our ODI setup for the past decade,” McDonald said. “Not only has he been an invaluable player but also an incredible person to have in the group. He is a natural leader, an exceptionally popular player and a great person. He should be congratulated on his ODI career and all of his achievements.”However, he played only one more ODI after that World Cup, against Pakistan earlier this season, and did not receive a Cricket Australia contact last year, but was earmarked to play a role at the Champions Trophy in the absence of the injured Cameron Green.”I wasn’t involved in those discussions, but from our perspective, Stoinis was trying to map out how one-day cricket was going for him,” assistant coach Daniel Vettori said after the opening day of the second Test in Galle. “[The] 2027 World Cup is a long way away. From my perspective, it’s been great the way he’s been able to lead with the ball at times. I think back to that 2023 World Cup and those two breakthroughs against Pakistan, and his style of bowling and the aggressiveness. If the big three weren’t able to get a breakthrough or Zamps, then Stoins was turned to a lot on the bowling front, and he brought a real energy and attitude.”Stoinis recently played three matches for Durban’s Super Giants in the SA20, where he suffered an injury in his second outing, on the back of the BBL with Melbourne Stars.Australia will need to make numerous changes to their Champions Trophy squad, which they are due to confirm after the second Test against Sri Lanka. Mitchell Marsh has been ruled out with a back injury while captain Pat Cummins and fellow quick Josh Hazlewood will also miss the tournament.

Pakistan turn it around to clinch series 2-1 after Sajid, Noman special

Sajid and Noman shared 19 out of 20 wickets to leave their batters chasing a target of only 36

Pakistan 344 (Shakeel 134, Sajid 48*, Noman 45, Rehan 4-66, Bashir 3-129) and 37 for 1 (Masood 23*) beat England 267 (Smith 89, Duckett 52, Sajid 6-128, Noman 3-88) and 112 (Root 33, Noman 6-42, Sajid 4-69) by nine wicketsThe wait is finally over. For the first time since 2021, Pakistan have won a Test series at home, coming back from 1-0 down to confirm a 2-1 success over England.A comprehensive nine-wicket win on day three of the third and decisive Test in Rawalpindi arrived before lunch, achieved with so little fuss that England’s victory by an innings in the opening match feels like it belongs in a different series altogether. It is only the second time Pakistan have come from behind in a series and the first time they have done so at home.Just as it was in the first innings, and indeed the victorious second Test at Multan, Noman Ali and Sajid Khan ran riot, bagging all 10 wickets as England were snuffed out for 112 in a listless second innings performance. It was Noman’s turn to pocket the match ball with 6 for 42, a sixth five-wicket haul, while Sajid’s 4 for 69 registered a second 10-wicket match of his 10-Test career after 6 for 128 on the first day. That left a nominal chase of 36 on the table, which was still enough for beleaguered home skipper Shan Masood to indulge in a cathartic 23 from six deliveries. He clouted four successive fours against Jack Leach upon his arrival to the crease after Saim Ayub was trapped leg before, then sealed victory with a towering six off Shoaib Bashir.Prior to Masood walking off with Abdullah Shafique, Noman and Sajid had done so hand in hand, basking in the glory of instigating England’s day three collapse in which the final seven wickets fell for just 46, and the fact their introductions turned the series on its head. Since being drafted into the squad after the tourists took a 1-0 lead, they have managed 39 wickets between them – Noman’s left-arm spin taking 20 at 13.85, Sajid’s off breaks 19 from 21.01.And yet, things began serenely enough for England. They started Saturday 53 behind on 24 for 3, but in Root and Brook, they had two batters capable of chipping off that deficit, and then some.Related

Sajid Khan claims Urdu misdirection aided his batting exploits

When Brook began the 13th over by striking Sajid for back-to-back fours – first through cover, then over mid off on the charge – the more pessimistic Pakistan fans might have been wondering if the Yorkshire pair were about to embark on another match-tilting partnership. After all, it was these two who combined for all of 454 in the first Test at Multan. However, that was before Sajid and Noman entered the series. And after the former adjusted his line to keep Brook honest, the latter followed up a slow delivery with one far quicker that was cut late into the gloves of Mohammad Rizwan. Pakistan’s lead had been cut to 11, but the first domino had been toppled. Others duly followed.Stokes’ troubles against spin continued, inexplicably leading a straight delivery from Noman, expecting turn from over the wicket that never came. Jamie Smith’s charge to Sajid was almost as bad, bowled off stump through a wild swing that belied the sensibilities he had displayed with a load-bearing 89 in the first innings. It was only four balls after Smith’s dismissal that England went ahead, and what hopes they had of extending that in a meaningful way ended when Root was snared by a pearler from Noman with a lead of eight. Perfect dip onto a length to drag the right-hander forward from around the wicket, before just enough spin – it was a delivery the 38-year-old had served up a few times but only Root was good enough to nick. ASajid tagged in to lop off the tail, yorking Gus Atkinson before knocking back Rehan Ahmed’s leg stump for his second 10-wicket match haul. And he looked to have bagged a second five-for in the match when Shoaib Bashir was given out LBW on the sweep.A cursory DRS review came back in the No.11’s favour, with the impact onto the pad coming outside off stump. The reprieve only brought an extra two runs, as Noman caught Leach lacking on the charge, firing one wide of the advancing left-hander, stumped smartly by Rizwan.A lead of 35 was always going to be light work on a pitch that was far from demonic, but it was Masood’s introduction that ensured formalities were completed inside 3.1 overs. Ayub began the chase with a brace of fours at the end of the first over before Leach pinned him in front, confirmed via DRS after another erroneous call from umpire Sharfuddoula. But even his dismissal brought some icing to the cake, as Masood took the team charging over the line for his first series win as captain. After starting his tenure with six straight defeats before the second Test of this series, It was hard to begrudge him that honour.

Shubman Gill credits working on 'defensive game' for Test success

Shubman Gill has said working on his “defensive game” helped him turn his Test fortunes around against England earlier this year. Before heading into the home series against England, Gill’s average in Tests was 30.59. But batting at No. 3 across the five games, he hit 452 runs in nine innings, at an average of 56.50. That included two centuries and half-centuries each, as he overturned a run of low scores in the format. Returning to first-class cricket for the first time since then, Gill will be leading India A at the Duleep Trophy opener on Thursday.”I worked on my defence a little bit more, especially against the spinners,” Gill said at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, where his side will face India B in the Duleep Trophy. “Playing on turning tracks, if you are not able to have that confidence in your defence [then it disturbs your game]. If you’re playing on a turning track, you should be able to defend a lot more. [It is] then you play scoring shots.Related

“And with more T20 [cricket], and playing on, I wouldn’t say flat tracks, but [on] batting-friendly tracks – [and] more in the white-ball [games] – I feel it takes away a little bit of your defensive game over a period of time. So that was my focus in the England series.”After scoring 104 in the second innings of the second Test against England in Visakhapatnam, he revealed he had asked the team management to push him down to No. 3 instead of playing as an opener, a position where he had batted 29 times.Despite the returns against England, Gill acknowledged that he is not quite there yet as a Test player, and that he intended to make up for it. India play ten Tests over the next four months, starting with two against Bangladesh from September 19.”Yes, definitely, I haven’t reached my expectations yet,” he said. “But we have ten Test matches ahead of us back-to-back. So hopefully after these ten Test matches, I will be able to meet my expectations.”

Gill: As captain, ‘you should understand your players a lot more’

Gill said that he never felt any “extra pressure” being part of the India leadership group, as the added responsibility required him to know more about his team-mates.Over the last few months, Gill has had plenty of leadership opportunities. That run started when he captained Gujarat Titans in the IPL after Hardik Pandya went back to Mumbai Indians. Gill then led India in five T20Is against Zimbabwe, after Rohit Sharma had retired from the format and several other senior players were rested.India reversed a 0-1 scoreline to beat the hosts 4-1, after which Gill had said that captaincy “brings out the best in me”. He was even named vice-captain for the T20Is and ODIs against Sri Lanka that followed.”My role as a batsman doesn’t really change,” Gill said. “Even if I am the captain or the vice-captain, the aim is to get runs and make my team win, [and] contribute in any way possible.”If you are the captain or the vice-captain, then you should be able to understand your players a lot more rather than when you are just a player. Sometimes, it happens that you have played with a lot of [these] players since childhood. You have played a lot of age-group cricket [together]. So, obviously, you are already connected, and so it is more fun to play with them.”And if you are enjoying your role in the captaincy, it is very important to lead with performance. So if you are getting all these things, then you enjoy everything.”

He's a dream for Delap: Chelsea weigh up move for "generational" £60m star

It’s been a hectic summer for Chelsea so far this year.

Instead of enjoying some time off and getting themselves ready for an intense Premier League campaign next season, the Blues have been fighting their corner in the Club World Cup.

Enzo Maresca’s men might have stumbled somewhat against Flamengo on Friday, but in the small hours of Wednesday morning, they bounced back with a 3-0 win against ES Tunis.

More importantly, the game also saw summer signing Liam Delap open his account for the club, and if recent reports are to be believed, the club could be looking at someone who’d be a great teammate for the Englishman.

Chelsea target attacking reinforcements

With Chelsea looking to improve on their fourth-place finish in the Premier League next season, it’s not been a surprise to see them linked with a host of attacking stars in recent weeks, such as Hugo Ekitiké and even Victor Osimhen.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The former managed to rack up a tally of 34 goal involvements in 48 games this season and would reportedly cost around £84m, while the latter managed to amass a haul of 45 goal involvements in 41 games and could cost around £60m.

However, as brilliant as they would be for the Blues, they’re both centre-forwards, so it would be hard to describe either of their potential arrivals as good news for Delap, unlike with Alejandro Garnacho.

Yes, according to a recent report from the Telegraph, Chelsea could still make a push to sign the Manchester United star this summer.

The report claims that the West Londoners are now ‘weighing up the possibility’ of signing the Argentine international while sending Christopher Nkunku the other way in a swap deal.

We say ‘sort of’ swap deal, as the report claims the pair moving in opposite directions would be handled as separate deals, meaning a fee would have to be paid for the winger, who the Red Devils value at £60m.

It could be a complicated and costly transfer to get over the line, but given Garnacho’s potential and ability, it might be one worth pursuing, especially as he could be a great signing for Delap.

Why Garnacho would be a great signing for Delap

Okay, there are two main reasons why Garnacho could be a great signing and teammate for Delap at Chelsea, and the first relates to his output.

Alejandro Garnacho

Even though the United ace is far from being the finished product and can certainly be a little frustrating at times, his raw output is actually quite impressive, especially for someone his age.

For example, in 58 appearances this season, totalling just 3568 minutes, the “generational” talent, as dubbed by Statman Dave, managed to score 11 goals and provide ten assists for a pretty rubbish Red Devils side.

That comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 2.76 games, or one every 169.90 minutes, which is actually better than some of the Blues’ better wing options, like Pedro Neto, were able to manage.

So, just imagine how effective the former Ipswich Town gem could be with someone able to produce those numbers in a dysfunctional team to his left.

The second reason the Madrid-born ace would be a great teammate for the Englishman is that he is also a young, developing player, so in theory, they could develop alongside one another, learn each other’s game and hopefully reach their respective peaks at near enough the same time, in turn helping the squad as a whole.

Ultimately, signing Garnacho might not be a popular decision to start with, but he’s shown that in the right environment, he can thrive, and with an exciting, capable striker like Delap next to him, he could become exceptional.
