Anuj Dal delivers in style as Derbyshire ramp up promotion bid

Five second-innings wickets follow crucial century as Worcestershire are outgunned

ECB Reporters Network28-Jul-2022Derbyshire 130 (Dal 55, Pennington 4-36) and 343 (Dal 112*, McKiernan 71, Madsen 69) beat Worcestershire 185 (Kashif 52, Aitchison 4-40) and 190 (Roderick 53*, Dal 5-40, Aitchison 3-55) by 98 runsAnuj Dal completed a superb all-round performance with a crucial intervention with the ball as Derbyshire overcame Worcestershire by 98 runs in the LV=Insurance County Championship match at New Road.Dal followed up a first-innings fifty and then a superb century with a career best return of 5 for 40 off 15 overs as Worcestershire were dismissed for 190 in 64.1 overs. The all-rounder initially struck three times in the space of seven balls to break Worcestershire’s resistance after they had resumed on 108 for 5 in pursuit of a 289 target. He made the crucial breakthrough when trapping Jack Haynes lbw for 45 after a partnership of 92 with Gareth Roderick (53 not out).Dal then sent back Joe Leach, and Josh Baker in quick succession to effectively seal a third Championship win of the campaign for the Peakites. It capped a tremendous fightback by the visitors who faced several positions of adversity in the game. They showed the character and spirit instilled into them by Head Coach, Mickey Arthur, since he arrived at the Incora County Ground this season.Derbyshire are now firmly in the race for a promotion spot for when they return to Championship action after the Royal London Cup.But Worcestershire were left to reflect on failing to press home a position of strength for the second home game. They had established a first-innings lead of 132 against Glamorgan and ended up being edged out by three wickets on a bowler-friendly surface. This time they reduced Derbyshire to 14 for 5 in their first innings and then 92 for 5 in the second when their lead was just 37.A third defeat of the campaign was a blow to their own promotion hopes.Haynes and Roderick were relatively untroubled during the opening hour of the day but the introduction of Dal at 143 for 5 started a swift decline by Worcestershire.Haynes had battled away for nearly three hours for his 45 before he pushed forward to Dal and was lbw.Leach lasted only two balls before he drove at Dal and picked out Hilton Cartwright at cover.Baker lost his off stump after offering no shot and keeper Brooke Guest claimed his ninth catch of the match from a Dillon Pennington edge.Roderick had time to complete his maiden Championship half century for Worcestershire off 126 balls before Muhammed Hasnain edged Sam Conners to second slip to seal Derbyshire’s win.

National Cricket Academy coaches Sitanshu Kotak, Sairaj Bahutule and Munish Bali will be part of India’s support staff, which will be led by VVS Laxman, on the short tour of Ireland later this month.Kotak, who accumulated 8061 first-class runs for Saurashtra in a career spanning two decades, was part of the India A support staff during their tour of South Africa in November-December 2021. Bahutule, one of the most successful spinners in Ranji Trophy history with 630 first-class wickets, was bowling coach of the India Under-19 side that won the World Cup in the Caribbean in early 2022. Bali was also with them, as fielding coach.Laxman will be India’s head coach during their two-match T20I series in Ireland, filling in for Rahul Dravid, who will instead be in England to oversee the team’s preparation for the rescheduled fifth Test from the tour last year as well as the limited-overs series. With Dravid and the other senior support staff members set to depart for England with the Test squad later this week, the trio of Bali, Kotak and Bahutule has already joined the T20I squad that is currently playing South Africa at home.Laxman is currently the director of cricket at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, a position he has been in since being appointed last year following Dravid’s elevation as head coach of the national team. He has earlier been involved in coaching capacities with Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL and Bengal in the Indian domestic circuit as a batting consultant. Earlier this year, he was part of the support staff group with the India Under-19 World Cup-winning team in the Caribbean. There will also be a clash of dates between India’s T20 warm-up games in England – against Northamptonshire and Derbyshire – and the Edgbaston Test, so there is a possibility of Laxman being with the team during those games as well.India’s Test specialists are likely to leave for England on June 15. The Birmingham Test had been pushed back following a Covid-19 outbreak in the Indian camp last year.

'Makes no sense' – Thomas Tuchel criticises England display as coach admits they 'struggled a bit' despite World Cup qualifying win against Latvia

England boss Thomas Tuchel has admitted that the Three Lions 'struggled a bit' at the start of the second half of their 3-0 win against Latvia.

Tuchel has started his career as England boss with two straight wins in the World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Latvia. The Three Lions kicked off the clash against Latvia with a superb free-kick strike in the first half before second-half goals from Harry Kane and Eberechi Eze rounded up a 3-0 win.

England seemed to struggle to get off the blocks at the start of the second half against Latvia despite dominating the proceedings in the first half, as it seemed the visitors may get back into the game. However, the Three Lions held off the surge and got back their stronghold of the clash, and Tuchel has now admitted that the drop at the start of the second half "makes no sense".

WHAT TUCHEL SAID

Speaking to the media, Tuchel said: "It was not an easy match. We saw a lot of good things, created good chances. We needed a free-kick to unlock it. I'm happy with the attitude, energy and desire. We will get there.

"The second half we started to slow the game down and made little movement, which makes no sense. But the second goal was better as we showed acceleration from one of our sixes. We encourage everyone to have these late accelerations but we struggled a bit until the goal."

Tuchel will now some more time to analyse what exactly happened at the start of the second half as well as the two games in their entirety. The Three Lions will return to action in June against Andorra in the third World Cup qualifier.

Babar Azam 102*, Abdullah Shafique 71* as Pakistan fight after Australia set them 506

The visitors had declared their second innings on 97, and asked the hosts to survive 172 overs

Tristan Lavalette15-Mar-2022Pakistan 148 and 192 for 2 (Babar 102*, Shafique 71*, Green 1-15) need another 314 runs to beat Australia 556 for 9 dec and 97 for 2 dec (Khawaja 44*, Labuschagne 44, Afridi 1-21)Captain Babar Azam hit a stirring century and combined brilliantly with opener Abdullah Shafique to defy Australia’s push for victory, as Pakistan’s stubborn resistance left the second Test intriguingly poised ahead of the fifth day.Needing to survive 172 overs, Pakistan were 192 for 2 at stumps on day four with Babar on 102* and Shafique unbeaten on 71. Pakistan still need another 314 runs for an unlikely record-setting victory, but have made Australia toil through 82 overs in a far cry to their toothless first innings of 148.Having played a lone hand in Pakistan’s first innings, Babar notched his sixth Test century – his first in two years – with a sweep over fine leg just before stumps. He let out a roar amid jubilation from a sparse crowd after which he and Shafique survived two overs against the second new ball and made it through to the close. After Pakistan were reeling at 21 for 2, Babar and Shafique combined for a rousing partnership of 171 to thwart Australia’s attack and provide a flicker of hope for the hosts, who had been hapless for most of this match previously. With oppressive conditions in Karachi throughout the match, the pitch is marked by widening cracks in a contrast to the docile Rawalpindi deck amid a stale first Test draw. There was sharp turn and variable bounce evident, particularly earlier in Pakistan’s innings, but the pitch did not appear to deteriorate as the day wore on.Abdullah Shafique was dropped on 20 by Steven Smith•PCBBabar and Shafique were mostly untroubled, and blunted the bowling through almost two sessions in somewhat of a throwback to Rawalpindi when Australia claimed just four wickets in 239 overs. The visitors were left to rue two early chances against first-Test centurion Shafique, who started slowly before finding fluency after being joined at the crease by a positive Babar.Shafique was dropped on 20 by Steven Smith, whose struggles at slip continued when he spilt a straightforward chance. Even though he was standing close, Smith will feel aggrieved at his fumble, having been below par with his slip catching during the Ashes too. After Pakistan endured two horror run-outs in the first innings, Shafique was almost dismissed short of his crease for the second time in the Test only for Cameron Green’s throw from mid-on to miss the stumps. Australia weren’t able to penetrate with Mitchell Starc either, who had starred with 3 for 29 on day three, as he was unable to conjure the type of menacing reverse swing that had lit a fuse under the Test 24 hours earlier.Mitchell Swepson, Australia’s first specialist legspinner since Bryce McGain in 2009, was loose in Pakistan’s first innings but looked more comfortable the second time around, and occasionally conjured sharp fizz much like his hero Shane Warne, who mentored him.Late in the day, he was entrusted by Pat Cummins to break the partnership as Swepson bowled from around the wicket aiming for the rough patch outside the leg stump of the two right-hand batters with four catchers around the bat, but a confident Babar continually padded the ball away to frustrate Australia.Cameron Green got Azhar Ali after the batter ducked into a short delivery that skidded low•AFP/Getty ImagesCummins, who has seemingly made all the right moves in this Test, turned to himself before stumps and conjured sharp swing with the second new ball but to no avail. It has been a brave effort from Pakistan amid some expectation that Australia could wrap up victory inside four days after dominating since the get go. Things appeared to be going to plan for Australia when Pakistan started their daunting task disastrously before lunch, as opener Imam-ul-Haq was plumb lbw for 1 to a sliding Nathan Lyon delivery. It completed a miserable match for Imam, who had fallen loosely to Lyon on 20 in the first innings after twin centuries in Rawalpindi.Pakistan were intent on mere survival, with Azhar Ali stonewalling for 6 off 54 balls, but he fell lbw in the second over after lunch while ducking into a short Green delivery that skidded low. It was reminiscent of Glenn McGrath’s famous wicket against Sachin Tendulkar in Adelaide in 1999, but replays showed Azhar had gloved the ball before it hit his body as he trudged off ruing not calling for a review.Earlier in the day, Australia gave themselves plenty of time to take a series lead after Cummins declared their second innings 25 minutes into day four with the score at 97, their third-lowest declaration in Tests. The only other time Australia had declared both their innings in a Test in Asia was against India during the famous tied Test in Chennai in 1986.Usman Khawaja, who had hit three centuries in six previous innings since his recall, finished on 44* as the declaration cut short his chance of getting twin hundreds in the same Test after he achieved the feat in Sydney on his recall. However, the declaration turned out to be a wise call, with Australia coming up against stiff resistance from Pakistan, who have lifted off the canvas.

Sports psychologist helps put Josh Inglis on right path

Frustration over his own inability to convert starts into big scores was the catalyst for Josh Inglis’ rapid rise towards Test selection for the Ashes.Inglis is likely to find out in the coming days if he has bolted into Australia’s team for the first Test in Brisbane, locked in a battle with Alex Carey to succeed Tim Paine. But it comes after a remarkable 15 months for the West Australian.Sixty innings into his first-class career at the start of last summer, Inglis was yet to reach three figures after failing to convert nine half-centuries. It prompted him to speak with sports psychologist Matthew Burgin and spend more time with batting coach Beau Casson, with a heavy focus on how to train his mind in between deliveries.”It sort of plays on your mind after 20 or 25 Shield games without making a hundred,” Inglis said. “It was something that I really wanted to work on in my game.”I went to Matt, who’s now with Cricket Australia. I just really narrowed down my focus and my routines…I just really wanted to face more balls and prolong my innings.Related

“I spoke in depth about that, it was brilliant. It changed my game and allowed me to build a couple of big innings last year.”Inglis, 26, is doing his best to put Test selection out of his mind, reasoning he will still have a game for Australia A to prepare for if overlooked for the Ashes opener. But the difference in Inglis since starting with Burgin has been stark, with his first-class average before last summer 28.15 compared to 58.00 since – including three centuries. It’s also held him in good stead in recent weeks, with time as a reserve in Australia’s T20 World Cup squad and the ensuing hotel quarantine limiting time in the middle.”That’s probably the beauty of it. I can replicate what I’m doing in training and in games,” Inglis said. “It’s not something that just comes out during a Shield game or an A game or whatever. I’m trying to use that every time I pick up a bat to help myself.”It’s before the ball is bowled, facing the delivery and then after the ball is bowled. It’s everything. And it’s doing it at training as well to make sure I’m replicating it as much as possible.”The other narrative around Inglis’ potential Test debut is that it would come against the country of his birth.Born in Leeds and a product of the Yorkshire system, his first memories of the Ashes centre around hapless nights watching Matthew Hayden plunder runs in the 2002-03 series. He vividly remembers Kevin Pietersen and current quick James Anderson reclaiming the urn in 2005, and still supported England when he arrived in Australia at age 14.Inglis also has his old English accent back, admitting the “twang” had returned to his voice in a county stint earlier this year.”It would obviously be very interesting [debuting against England]. It doesn’t happen very often,” Inglis said. “As a kid obviously growing up in England, I supported England.”But [my family] would obviously still be really proud and happy for me if it were to happen. It’s incredibly exciting. If given the opportunity, I’m feeling really confident.”

Birmingham let “special” star leave for £0, now he’s outperforming Iwata

Birmingham City look to be coasting to promotion back up to the Championship at the first time of asking, with Chris Davies’ Blues sitting pretty at the top of the League One table currently.

Of course, fans of other clubs in the third tier will be hoping that Birmingham don’t walk the league in order to make the division more exciting, but the numbers suggest that the ex-Premier League club should win promotion comfortably with only loss next to their name from 12 games.

Davies in the St. Andrew’s hot seat should be commended for how quickly he’s managed to get the new-look Blues side firing on all cylinders to take the tricky league by storm, with Tomoki Iwata sticking out as one consistently impressive performer under the 39-year-old manager’s tenure.

Iwata's form this season

Away from the flashy signing of Jay Stansfield from Fulham, Birmingham did think about their summer business in through the door methodically – as opposed to just throwing money at an instant attempt at promotion – with Iwata joining from Celtic a far more low-key deal.

Snapping up the Japanese midfielder, who Davies worked with closely as Ange Postecoglou’s assistant manager at Celtic, has proven to be a stunning bit of business, with the 27-year-old an overwhelming fan’s favourite already for his relentless work ethic in the middle of the park.

On top of his energetic displays winning over waves of Birmingham supporters, Iwata has also managed to find the back of the net four times in all competitions alongside picking up one assist, which included this first-time effort getting the better of Bolton Wanderers goalkeeper Luke Southwood earlier this month in a confident 2-0 victory.

Everpresent in his manager’s XIs for his side’s last eight League One games, the ex-Celtic man feels like a crucial glue for the Blues centrally, as more and more wins begin to be eyed up in the third tier.

In another reality, Birmingham could well be laughing even more in the midfield positions with this former Blues flop returning to the club, who is now outperforming Iwata at his current employers.

The ex-Birmingham midfielder now outperforming Iwata

The player in question here is Daniel Crowley, a name that might ring a bell with Arsenal fans as much as it does for those with connections to the League One table toppers, with the former Gunners youth player tipped for big things once upon a time in North London.

The 5 foot 9 midfielder would never go on to make a senior appearance for his ex-employers, but he would boast six goals from 36 appearances for the U21s, alongside receiving some glowing words from Arsene Wenger in 2016, who labelled Crowley as a “special” talent when he was still on the books of the Premier League giants.

He struggled after being let go of by Arsenal, becoming somewhat of a nomad playing out in the Netherlands, before an opportunity in the English game popped back up with Birmingham in 2019.

It would prove to be another flat stint of the attacking midfielder’s career away from the luxuries of the Emirates, with only two goals and five assists coming his way at St. Andrew’s from 45 contests, prior to departing at the end of his contract in the summer of 2021.

But, Crowley has certainly found his mojo playing for Notts County in the here and now, with the midfielder bettering Iwata’s league numbers playing for the Magpies this campaign so far, namely bagging six goals and assists, with an astounding 93.3 touches averaged per League Two clash.

The ex-Arsenal man has also picked up an additional assist in the EFL Cup to take his glowing goal contribution numbers to seven from 13 clashes in all competitions, matching the amount he managed for Birmingham across 45 mostly forgettable appearances, while also bettering Iwata’s return of five goal involvements in ten games for the Blues.

Key for the fourth-tier side over many seasons now, with this delicate effort against Bradford City sticking out as one sublime strike from his Magpies back catalogue, it’s clear that Crowley and his current employers are just made for each other.

The same can be said for Iwata and Birmingham, as Davies and Co continue to thank their lucky stars they went after the 27-year-old in the summer.

Joe Mennie announces retirement from state cricket

South Australia seamer Joe Mennie, who played one Test, has announced his retirement from state cricket so he can return to his family in the UK.Mennie, 32, missed the entire 2020-21 Australian season due to the pandemic travel restrictions while he was in the UK and though he had come back for this pre-season with the Redbacks he has opted to call time.”I am extremely grateful towards the Redbacks for backing me across the journey, in particular through a difficult period across last season and into this season,” he said. “To have two young children is an incredible joy, and I need to be as close to them as possible.”They are, and will always be, the most important part of my life, and I can’t wait to get back to the UK and see them again. My journey with SACA has been a long and enjoyable one, but the time has come for me to move into the next phase of my life, and I am excited to do that with those closest to me.”Mennie has taken 297 first-class wickets, 256 of them in the Sheffield Shield, putting him fifth for South Australia in the competition behind Clarrie Grimmett, Ashley Mallett, Chadd Sayers and Tim May.His one Test came against South Africa at Hobart in 2016 after which he became one of the players dropped when Australia were bowled out for 85 and thrashed by an innings. He had previously played two ODIs against South Africa.Mennie’s biggest haul in a domestic season came in 2015-16 when he claimed 51 wickets at 21.21 and he had another standout campaign in 2018-19 with 37 wickets at 19.72.”When looking at the numbers, it is clear that Joe is one of the greatest bowlers the Redbacks have seen; but Joe’s impact on this great state goes well beyond the numbers,” South Australia head coach Jason Gillespie said. “He is a true professional, always willing to put the team first, and someone that we will greatly miss.”Not only has Joe represented South Australia, he also has a prized baggy green cap resting beside his baggy red, and that is something that he will be able to treasure forever. Something that he earned through dedication, hard-work, commitment and passion.”We thank Joe for every delivery he bowled as a Redback and his willingness to get stuck into the task at hand every day. We wish him and his loved ones well. He will always be welcome at Adelaide Oval.”
