91% passing, 5 duels won: Newcastle star proved he’s as important as Isak

Newcastle United put their Premier League defeat against Chelsea last weekend firmly in the past, dispatching Enzo Maresca’s Blues in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

It’s been a patchy start to the season for the Magpies, but Eddie Howe’s squad carry plenty of class and showcased their quality as they breezed into the quarter-finals, with Brentford travelling to St. James’ Park for that one.

Sat in 12th place in the league with just three wins from nine matches, there’s plenty of work to do, and though Arsenal are the opponents at the weekend, Alexander Isak is finding his feet, having dismantled the Chelsea defence.

Alexander Isak has clicked into gear

There’s no need to shirk away from the fact that Isak has started the season slowly. Who cares, for the Swede has now scored in successive matches, both against Chelsea, and looks to have hit his stride at the perfect time for Howe’s goal-shy side.

Last season, he posted 25 goals across 40 appearances, and though he only has three from nine outings this term, the 25-year-old is starting to reclaim his usual gusto.

Newcastle’s suffocating press forced Chelsea into an error that Isak ate greedily, claiming possession after the impressive Sandro Tonali’s challenge and thumping home. He also played a big part in the Toon’s other goal and will be delighted with his efforts.

It was an excellent and clinical display, and that’s despite completing only six passes all evening and losing possession 14 times, as per Sofascore.

He left something wanting in his crispness to be sure, and for that reason, he wasn’t Howe’s finest performer of the night. That would be Joelinton, who was immense in the engine room.

Joelinton was immense for Newcastle

Joelinton has ebbed and flowed this season but produced arguably his finest display of the 2024/25 campaign against Chelsea in midweek, with his energy and pressing instrumental in the victory.

It was a showing that turned heads, with the Northern Echo awarding the Brazil international with an 8/10 match rating, writing of his performance: ‘Set the tone for Newcastle’s display with his aggressive pressing – looked better in a more advanced role.’

Having won 75% of his dribbles, offered composed crispness in possession and indeed brought the tireless and raging energy levels that were requisite for success against Maresca’s Chelsea team, Joelinton sure did catch the eye in a more advanced role.

He benefitted greatly from the slickness of Sandro Tonali a bit deeper, coming into his own even though his compatriot Bruno Guimaraes entered the fray after the break.

Joelinton for Newcastle

Isak might be Newcastle’s chief goalscorer, but Joelinton offers some physicality and expression in the middle of the park that can have quite the ripple effect.

He’s an integral part of Howe’s unit, and must now use this display as a launchpad to make a marked impact on the Magpies’ season.

Newcastle could secure a major bargain in 2025, should Alexander Isak leave the club.

Celtic line up bigger signing than Engels with swoop for £110k-p/w star

Celtic have largely been in phenomenal form in the 2024/25 campaign and currently sit top of the Scottish Premiership table with seven wins in seven matches.

The Hoops have conceded one goal, and none from open play, in their seven games in the top-flight, whilst they have also won both of their League Cup outings so far.

Brendan Rodgers’ side also won their first Champions League clash with a 5-1 win over Slovan at Parkhead, before they were hammered 7-1 by Borussia Dortmund in Germany in their second match.

Their dismal night in Europe was a one-off in comparison to the rest of their performances this season, which have allowed them to win every other game in all competitions.

The Northern Irish head coach will surely be delighted with the way that his team have started the campaign and will be hoping that they can carry on their strong form with a win over Aberdeen, who have also won all seven of their league games, at Parkhead on Saturday.

Despite Celtic’s almost-perfect start to the season, Rodgers could still look to bolster his squad when the January transfer window opens for business, as one player is reportedly keen on a move to Paradise.

Premier League star wants Celtic move

According to The Boot Room, Celtic are interested in signing Kieran Tierney from Premier League side Arsenal ahead of the second half of the season.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The report claims that the Scotland international wants to move on from The Emirates and has made a return for a second spell in Glasgow a priority ahead of the January window, as he is keen to complete a transfer back to the club.

It states that the Gunners are prepared to allow him to leave on a loan deal that would be viable for the Scottish giants, who may not be able to afford a permanent deal at this moment in time.

Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney.

The outlet adds that Arsenal would also be open to working out a permanent deal with the Bhoys further down the line, with his contract not due to expire until the summer of 2026.

It is also revealed that Tierney was in talks over a return to Parkhead in the recent summer transfer window before a serious hamstring injury put an end to any potential move. However, the Scottish defender is due to return to fitness ahead of January, which could open the door for Celtic to make another swoop for him.

If Rodgers and the Hoops can pull off a deal for the Arsenal outcast at the start of next year then it could be an even bigger signing than Arne Engels was in the summer.

How much Celtic paid for Arne Engels

Celtic showcased their ambition in the last transfer window by smashing their record transfer fee to sign the Belgium international from Augsburg.

The Scottish giants reportedly splashed out a fee of £11m to sign the central midfielder from the Bundesliga club, which was a huge show of faith from the club in him and Rodgers.

It was an ambitious move by the Hoops when you consider the transfer fee. However, he also came in as a young player who did not start regularly for a team that finished 11th in the Bundesliga last season.

Engels started 13 of his 32 appearances in the German top-flight in the 2023/24 campaign, which shows that they did not trust him to start week-in-week-out in one of Europe’s major leagues.

That allowed Celtic to swoop in and bring him to Scotland to continue his development by playing regularly for Rodgers in Glasgow, and he has already made a fast start to life at Parkhead.

The Belgian youngster has racked up two goals and three assists in his last six appearances – including one goal and two assists in the Champions League – for the Hoops in all competitions, after making his debut off the bench in a 3-0 win over Rangers at the start of September.

As you can see in the table above, he has already showcased his attacking quality with one goal and five chances created in four outings in the Premiership for the Hoops.

Celtic could now, though, make an even bigger signing than Engels by swooping for a player who has proven himself in the major European leagues.

Why Kieran Tierney would be a bigger signing than Arne Engels

Firstly, Tierney is reportedly on £110k-per-week and it would represent a big show of ambition from the Scottish giants to take on those wages, whether it is on loan or a permanent deal.

The 27-year-old would also come in as a bigger signing than Engels as he has already established himself in Europe and at international level as a top performer.

Tierney has played 124 matches for Arsenal in all competitions and played 26 times for Real Sociedad in the 2023/24 campaign, whilst he has also been capped 46 times by Scotland.

The Scottish ace also racked up 37 assists in 170 matches for Celtic during his first spell at the club, winning 11 domestic trophies in that time.

This means that the Hoops would be bringing in a player who has proven himself in Scotland and in two major leagues, in the Premier League and LaLiga, in what should be the prime of his career at 27.

As you can see in the table below, Tierney spent last season on loan in LaLiga with Real Sociedad and showcased his defensive strength with a duel success rate of 60% and multiple tackles and interceptions per game on average.

The £110k-per-week star will have to overcome his injury woes, with at least 17 games missed through injury in each of the last five seasons, to return to his former glory, though.

Overall, Tierney is a top-class operator when fit who can be a dominant defensive presence, whilst also offering a creative threat, down the left flank and bringing in a player of his quality would be an even bigger coup than the £11m signing of Engels in the summer.

Heather Knight, Sophia Dunkley seal series for England with final-over victory

Dunkley hits penultimate ball for four to deny New Zealand in tight chase

Valkerie Baynes09-Sep-2021Heather Knight marked her return from injury with a nerveless innings to help seal a nail-biting victory for England at Taunton and clinch their T20I series against New Zealand 2-1.Knight, playing her 200th game for England after missing the first two matches of this series with a hamstring problem, struck 42 off 36 balls to get her side most of the way to the target of 145 – although it took an equally calm Sophia Dunkley to see the hosts over the line with a boundary from the penultimate ball.England’s bowlers had contained New Zealand early before an unbroken stand of 36 from 14 balls between Brooke Halliday and Katey Martin took them to a competitive total. Leigh Kasperek’s three wickets put England in danger at 97 for 4 but Knight steadied the innings during partnerships worth 55 with Amy Jones and 40 with Dunkley.Heather Knight played a vital hand in the chase•Getty ImagesKnight fell with eight runs needed but Dunkley found the ropes from an Amy Satterthwaite full toss with one ball to spare. The sight of Anya Shrubsole, who hadn’t played any part in the series, on crutches and in a moon boot before play was of concern for the home side ahead of announcing their squad on Saturday for the five-match ODI series with New Zealand starting in Bristol next week. She sprained her ankle at training on Tuesday and, having undergone scans, will be assessed by team medical staff in the coming days.Big three shackled
England’s attack kept a lid on New Zealand’s vaunted top order of Suzie Bates, making her 250th appearance for the White Ferns, Player of the Series Sophie Devine and Satterthwaite, all of whom have played more than 100 T20Is.They scored only seven fours between them and while Bates and Devine made starts there was to be no reprise of the former’s highest T20I score of 124 not out at the same ground against South Africa in the tri-series of 2018, nor of Devine’s rousing half-century which allowed New Zealand to level the series against England at Hove on Saturday.Tash Farrant missed a tough caught-and-bowled chance to dismiss Bates for 7 in the second over. But, after Bates swept her for four in front of square leg in the seventh over, Farrant responded with the next ball, sending leg stump cartwheeling with a fuller, straighter ball to dismiss Bates for 34 off 30.After a brief stoppage when all four floodlight towers went out due to an electrical fault, Sarah Glenn removed Satterthwaite, who picked out Katherine Brunt – back after pulling up sore from the first match – at long-on. When Sophie Ecclestone beat Devine’s attempted leg-side swipe with a ball that clattered into middle and leg, New Zealand were 90 for 3 in the 15th over. But the tourists managed to score 50 off the last four overs, thanks largely to Halliday and Martin, who struck three fours each, contributing 25 and 13 respectively to lift their side.Leigh Kasperek bagged two in two balls•Getty ImagesKasperek comes through
After a sedate start, Danni Wyatt struck Devine for four through midwicket and six over long-off in the third over to get the run chase moving. Jess Kerr struck in the next when Tammy Beaumont miscued to midwicket where Devine swallowed the catch. Wyatt carried on, however, helping herself to five more boundaries, including three on the trot off Kerr in the sixth over, through midwicket, cover and third as England finished the Powerplay 40 for 1 compared to New Zealand’s 37 without loss. But when Kasperek took two wickets in two balls, New Zealand were well and truly in the game. Expensive at Chelmsford, where she took 1 for 54, Kasperek claimed 3 for 25 from her four overs and ended the series as the leading wicket-taker with six at 16.50. She had Nat Sciver caught by Hayley Jensen at deep midwicket and then ended Wyatt’s enterprising knock of 35 off just 23 balls, pulling to deep square leg where Thamsyn Newton took the catch. Amy Jones survived the hat-trick ball and she joined Knight in rebuilding the England innings. After 10 overs, England were 66 for 3 compared to New Zealand’s 61 for 1. Jones struck back-to-back fours off Satterthwaite’s second over, the 12th of the innings, and Knight chimed in two balls later, punishing a full toss through backward square leg. But Kasperek returned to the attack in the 13th over and, after she was pulled for Jones’ fifth boundary, she struck two balls later, luring Jones into an attempted slog and finding an edge on to the stumps.Shining Knight
Knight made a welcome comeback, striking five fours on the way to her score, including a slog-sweep off Kasperek’s final over which bounced and cleared Newton at deep square leg and another off Devine through midwicket in the 19th. When she picked out Bates at mid-off from Devine’s penultimate ball, England needed eight off seven balls. Maia Bouchier, playing just her second match after making her international debut in the previous game, was bowled by Satterthwaite on the first ball of the final over, heaping the pressure on the hosts. But Brunt and Dunkley, who had held their nerve with a 92-run stand to defeat India, also at Taunton, during their ODI series earlier in the summer, did so again in truncated style. A single to Brunt followed by a hard-run two to Dunkley left England needing four off the last two balls. Dunkley needed just one, smashing a four through midwicket to seal the match and the series.

Arsenal ready to make late offer to sign "incredible" £70m Trossard repeat

Whilst it looked as though Arsenal were going to settle for Riccardo Calafiori and Mikel Merino, they're now reportedly ready to table a last-gasp offer to sign an attacking reinforcement in a repeat of their 2023 deal for Leandro Trossard.

Arsenal transfer news

Arsenal have once again operated with plenty of intelligence in the summer transfer window in what would have been a pleasant surprise for many fans not so long ago. The Gunners kicked off their window by signing Calafiori off the back of an excellent season with Bologna, helping the Italian club earn shock Champions League qualification, and now look set to add Merino to their ranks.

Strengthening both Mikel Arteta's midfield and backline, those in North London still have time to welcome an attacking addition to complete the perfect summer at The Emirates, with one Premier League star potentially arriving.

According to Football Transfers, Arsenal are now ready to make a last-gasp offer to sign Evan Ferguson from Brighton & Hove Albion alongside interest from title rivals Manchester City. However, the Gunners would reportedly prefer a loan deal, before a permanent switch next summer amid the forward's £70m price tag.

Could a surprise be on the cards at Arsenal before the deadline?

Just 19 years old, Ferguson is one who would take time to reach his best under Arteta, likely replacing the outgoing Eddie Nketiah rather than Gabriel Jesus, but the potential is there for all to see.

Of course, Arsenal have already benefitted from signing Brighton stars in the past, welcoming Trossard in January 2023 and watching the winger thrive under Arteta at The Emirates ever since, including when he bagged the opening goal in the 2-0 win at Aston Villa on Saturday.

"Incredible" Ferguson can finally solve Arteta's remaining problem

If you look around this current Arsenal side, it's easy to admire just how ready they are to go head-to-head with Pep Guardiola's winning machine for a third-consecutive campaign, but one problem remains.

Whilst Jesus is an excellent player, what he is not is an out-and-out goalscorer, as proved last season and as will likely become apparent in the current campaign. It's the one remaining criticism of Arteta's side and the one issue that Ferguson could arrive to solve for years to come.

Brighton striker Evan Ferguson.

A player who's already got a Premier League hat-trick to his name at 19 years old, the Irishman earned the praise of former Brighton boss Roberto de Zerbi in May 2023. The manager said via The Irish Mirror: "Ferguson’s improvement has been incredible. He’s playing like an old player but he is only 18. There is a good dressing room with the mentality to help all our younger players.”

It's the type of improvement that would only keep coming at Arsenal too, as we've seen with players like Trossard, William Saliba and Kai Havertz. That said, with just a matter of days left until the summer transfer window slams shut, it remains to be seen whether the Gunners can strike a deal with Brighton.

Cricket Australia and the Australian Cricketers Association have been at great pains to ensure that this return would take place over and above the allowable cap of overseas arrivals to New South Wales so that no other inbound travellers miss out as a result.”The BCCI is putting in place the best possible arrangements. We’re not seeking any kind of special exemptions whatsoever,” CA’s chief executive Nick Hockley said when addressing the matter on May 5.”We will – any kind of quarantine arrangements would be over and above the cap. Forget Fraser: Southampton target Rashford 2.0 who’d "explode" under Martin

Russell Martin is going about his business this summer as Southampton manager attempting to construct the best possible team he can to help his side stay put in the Premier League, hoping to go against the grain of newly promoted sides choking under the severe pressure of the top-flight.

All three sides that were promoted last campaign instantly fell back down to the Championship, with the Saints boss attempting to blend new quality in through the door with reliable heads he knows already from his successful time to date in the St. Mary's dug-out.

The latter bracket saw Flynn Downes return on a permanent basis, after starring out on loan with the South Coast outfit from West Ham United, and the Southampton manager also wants Ryan Fraser to return for good after he also played his part in the club's promotion success story.

That move could be trickier to pull off, with a new left wing target now on the mind of the 38-year-old boss as a result.

Southampton interested in move for Serie A attacker

As per a report by Football Insider, the newly promoted side have registered their interest in trying to tempt Sassuolo winger Armande Lauriente to the South Coast this summer.

The now Serie B club are resigned to losing their star Frenchman owing to relegation, according to the report, with the likes of Italian top-flight outfit Lazio also reportedly keen on the agile 25-year-old away from Southampton just watching on.

The Sassuolo number 45 will, no doubt, be weighing up his options as we speak, therefore, with the potential for him to dazzle Premier League defences if he chooses the Saints as his new destination.

What Lauriente can offer Southampton

Lauriente joining would make the situation surrounding Fraser not yet returning to the South Coast easier to swallow too from Martin and Co's perspective, with the exciting attacker in question even possessing shades of Marcus Rashford's game, according to FBref.

Scoring sublime strikes like this free-kick above on a regular basis for his current employers, Lauriente could catch Premier League defences off-guard with his trickery, if he does sign on the dotted line to relocate to England shortly.

Last campaign, even whilst the collective team struggled in the midst of a relegation battle, the in-demand 25-year-old would amass five goals and six assists from 37 league clashes. In total, Lauriente's goal and assist haul playing in Serie A comes in at an impressive 24 goal contributions from 68 appearances.

Southampton could even win their very own Rashford if a move gets off the ground this transfer window, with their respective numbers very similar in certain areas of their attacking game, with Lauriente even bettering his Manchester United counterpart when it comes to progressive carries venturing forward last season.

The Frenchman also betters Fraser's numbers in certain areas too, when you cast an eye over the current Magpies winger's last top-flight season, with the ageing attacker only managing 2.30 shot creation actions per 90 minutes, alongside other illuminating statistics, when placed up against Lauriente and Rashford.

Lauriente will hope he can arrive into the Premier League and become an established performer at the level like the Red Devils man over time, therefore, who now has 402 first-team appearances for Erik Ten Hag's men in his back pocket.

He will further pray that he can help his new employers stave off the drop if he does sign, so he can avoid another relegation staining his CV, like his recent woes with Sassuolo.

As data analyst Ben Mattinson noted, "in the right system he’d explode", with the hope being that Martin can provide the outlet for Lauriente to dazzle at St Mary's.

Taijul Islam: I had a bad first session, but we recovered well later

Taijul Islam was critical of the way Bangladesh’s spinners – including himself – bowled for most of the first and second sessions of the third day of the Chattogram Test. And even though they now have a lead of 218 runs, the left-armer went so far as to say a repeat of such a performance could hamper their push for victory against the West Indies.Taijul became the senior bowler for the home side with Shakib Al Hasan out injured, but even he admitted that his bowling didn’t live up to expectations.Shakib walked off the field on the second afternoon after sending down six overs. The BCB later said that Shakib had strained his left thigh while trying to stop a ball off his own bowling and that he was being carefully monitored. But with three spinners already in the playing XI, Bangladesh had most of their bases covered. Taijul himself took a wicket off the first ball of the day, but thereafter Kraigg Brathwaite’s counter-attacking style put them off for a little while, and despite taking two more wickets in the first session, they conceded runs at 3.45 per over, a higher rate than most sessions in the game. West Indies continued to recover in the day’s middle session through a 99-run sixth wicket stand between Jermaine Blackwood and Joshua Da Silva.”I don’t think I bowled up to the responsibility on me,” Taijul said. “I had a bad first session, but we recovered well later. We made a comeback later in the second session. We have to say that the wicket is favouring spinners. We started well this morning but none of the spinners could continue in the same vein. We didn’t bowl in the right areas.”I think if the spinners bowled better in the first session, we may have had a better result. I think one of the reason could be our long break from Test cricket, but these things happen in cricket.”But once the Blackwood-Da Silva partnership was broken, Bangladesh shot back into the game with three more wickets.”When we bowled poorly in the first session, we planned to force them into taking risks,” Taijul said. “Thankfully at one point we got the breakthrough but this is how Test cricket is. There will be long periods when you will wait for wickets but when it does arrive, a few more follows.”Taijul hoped that Bangladesh are able to set a target of 300 or more even though the pitch is starting to show signs that suggest batting in the fourth innings won’t be so straightforward.”I think 250 is good enough on this wicket, but if we bowl like we did in the first session, it will be difficult for us. We have to bowl well, like we did later in the day. I think we have to give them a target of 300-350.”I think it is natural for the wicket to deteriorate on the fourth day, based on what we saw today. I think if the spinners can bowl well, they will have more favours from this wicket.”Meanwhile, a noticeable factor in Taijul’s bowling was his going back to his old action. During the BCB President’s Cup in October, Taijul was seen bowling with a more side-on action with a higher non-bowling arm, but he said that when he realised that the new action wasn’t paying dividends, he returned to his old one.”I had reasons for wanting to change my action, and similarly I know why I returned to my old action. I have worked on developing a new action, but there’s a difference between a natural action and one that’s developed. When I saw that results weren’t in my favour, I went back to my old action,” Taijul said.

Chelsea's £107m problem: Enzo Fernandez is having a nightmare as poor performances and off-the-field issues risk leaving Enzo Maresca with a World Cup-winning misfit

The out-of-sorts midfielder has been dropped from the Blues' starting line-up and faces a significant battle to regain his place

When Chelsea take to the field against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, Enzo Fernandez will almost certainly not be in the starting line-up. The strange thing is, that won't really come as a surprise.

A blockbuster £107 million ($132m at the time) signing from Benfica in January 2023, the midfielder is no longer a guaranteed starter under Enzo Maresca despite being made vice-captain in the summer, as the team seemingly evolves and progresses without him.

Consistently inconsistent, the Argentine finds himself in a funk and risks being left behind if he cannot find his place in the Italian's plans by rediscovering some his best form and, crucially, maintaining it.

    Worst possible start

Of course, Fernandez was in the headlines for all the wrong reasons before a ball had been kicked this season; amid Argentina's wild Copa America victory celebrations in July, Enzo was the man holding the camera and bizarrely live-streaming as he and his compatriots belted out a racist and transphobic chant at the expense of France's national team.

The song included the words "they play in France, but they are all from Angola" and "their mum is Nigerian, their dad is Cameroonian, but on the passport it says: French".

A deserved backlash arrived quickly, as a number of his Chelsea colleagues – many of whom are of Afro-French descent – turned on Fernandez and unfollowed him on Instagram. Centre-back Wesley Fofana labelled the incident "unabashed racism".

Fernandez inevitably apologised, claiming he "stands against discrimination in all forms" and apologised for "getting caught up in the euphoria". "That video, that moment, those words, do not reflect my character or beliefs. I am truly sorry," he wrote.

However, his actions still resulted in disciplinary action from Chelsea and a FIFA investigation. Although there were reports of a rift, his club-mates, including Fofana, eventually forgave him – but it would be remiss to say the debacle hasn't had some effect on him this season.

    Midfield misfit

On the pitch, Fernandez's performances this season haven't all been bad, but he certainly hasn't shown the level of consistency many would expect of a £107m player. Indeed, ahead of the trip to Man Utd he has lost his place in Maresca's so-called 'A team'.

Fernandez had been a starter in the early part of the season, aided by Romeo Lavia's five-week absence as a result of a hamstring injury suffered after an impressive showing on the opening day of the Premier League season against Manchester City. However, now Lavia is back to full fitness, Fernandez has been dropped.

The Belgian started the previous two league games against Liverpool and Newcastle, with Maresca tweaking his tactics in favour of more defensive solidity and in-form Moises Caicedo playing the role of the shuttling midfielder in the manager's preferred 4-3-3 shape, while Cole Palmer has, of course, been starring as a No.10. At present, it's hard to see how Fernandez fits.

He certainly hasn't been the creative force Chelsea would have hoped in 2024-25, and arguably since he signed; a deep-lying playmaker, Fernandez is yet to register a league goal or assist this campaign, and his pass completion percentage in the league is concerningly low at 80.7. Meanwhile, there are question marks over whether he has the stamina and physicality to be effective as a defensive midfielder.

The vast majority of Blues followers have backed Fernandez to the hilt in the belief that he will come good and become one of the best midfielders on the planet, with a damning recent statistical comparison of Chelsea's win rate with and without him (35% with, 81% without) swiftly rubbished. Patience, though, may soon run thin.

    'It's a matter of balance'

For his part, Maresca insists that he maintains faith in the midfielder and that his decision-making has been purely tactical. "I still trust Enzo," the head coach said in his press conference before the trip to Old Trafford.

"There is not any reason in the world I can lose confidence in him. The reason why he is not playing in the Premier League is because at this moment I take a different decision. My confidence is 100% with Enzo.

"In this moment, I know you are looking for some different reasons for Enzo [not starting], but it’s very simple. He’s not playing in this moment, we have so many games, he’s going to play for sure in the future. And it doesn’t mean Romeo and Moi are always going to play. At the moment one of them drops [their levels], probably we will change it."

He added: "It’s a matter of balance. Romeo and Moi give us physicality and strength in the middle. This is why we found the option of Malo [Gusto] in the pocket. Otherwise, when we play with Enzo it has to be with one of Moi or Romeo, and Enzo moves forward we struggle in the middle for physicality."

    Weight of expectation

Maresca has previously stated that he believes Fernandez and, previously, Caicedo have both been suffering under the weight of the eye-watering £100m+ transfer fees Chelsea paid for their respective services in 2023, as the former arrived from Benfica in January and the latter was signed from Brighton in the summer.

The head coach has openly admitted he feels the club made a mistake by paying that much and putting that expectation on the pair's shoulders.

"The price does not have to be a problem for them, it’s something that the players can do nothing about," the Italian said recently. "Sometimes players feel under pressure because the club pay too much, but this is a big problem and is a weight on the shoulders which does not help the players."

There is certainly some truth in that. Fernandez has always been fighting a losing battle in trying to live up to that price tag, and it's more likely than not that he never will with few players truly worth that astronomical sum. All Chelsea can hope for in the short-term is some consistency, with the 23-year-old more than capable of turning things around.
