PCB chairman Ehsan Mani warns of financial fallout if Covid-19 disrupts T20 World Cup

If the tournament is impacted, it could affect the ICC’s revenue distributions to its member boards

The PCB has not been hit as hard as other boards by the pandemic, but it is still planning for the worst-case scenario where the T20 World Cup is postponed•AFP

Ehsan Mani, the PCB chairman, has warned of the financial fallout to world cricket if the T20 World Cup, scheduled to be held later this year, is impacted by the Coronavirus pandemic. The tournament is due to take place in Australia in October-November but with much of the world in lockdown currently, and for some time yet, it is difficult to say with certainty whether the tournament will go ahead as planned.”If the World T20 in Australia, if that gets disrupted then the financial fallout from that will be very big,” Mani said on a PCB podcast. “The distributions they [the ICC] give to members, many boards – including us – will feel the pinch of it.”Mani, who is also chairman of the ICC’s Finance and Commercial Affairs committee and a former ICC president, was referring to the revenue the ICC distributes to its members, payments coming in twice a year annually in January and July. Those payments are made regardless of whether there is an ICC tournament in the calendar year and are calculated on the financial model that was agreed upon in June 2017.The PCB, along with six other Full Members, was slated to receive USD 128 million for the eight-year cycle between 2015 and 2023. Though that figure has been projected downwards to USD 115 million, a payout of approximately USD 7-8 million twice a year is a critical part of the financial health of all boards outside the big three comprising the BCCI, the ECB and CA.There is still some time to go before October, but the cricket calendar, if it is up and running by then, will also have to figure out a way of rescheduling a number of postponed bilateral commitments, as well as, potentially, the IPL.The PCB has not been hit as hard as other boards by the pandemic; the ECB looks likely to be hardest hit at this stage, but even SLC and the BCB have lost out on hosting bilateral tours from England and Australia respectively, which usually are lucrative tours for the home board.Nevertheless, the PCB is planning for the worst-case scenario in which ICC distributions could be affected should the T20 World Cup be postponed .”Financial controls are tight, we are not spending over what we earn so in that sense, we will probably be all right in the short term,” Mani said. “But if it goes into next year and ICC distributions don’t come in… I can say the PCB is expecting USD 7-8 million in July from the ICC, that might not come. So obviously we have to plan as if that doesn’t come.”Going forward to [next] January, the ICC will again distribute a similar amount. So there’s a lot of money on the line for us. How we can make that up when short of playing cricket, there’s no other way? You only make money by playing cricket.”Mani was talking only about the PCB’s planning for a worst-case scenario if the distributions don’t arrive; concrete discussions about the impact, of the cricket calendar shutting down, on revenue distributions have not yet taken place. But contingency planning is dominating the thinking of those in the sport’s corridors of power. Depending on how severely hit some boards already are, some scenarios regarding the revenue distributions are not implausible; July’s distributions could be held back to be paid out further down the line (when some boards might need them more) or redistributed in a way that lesser-hit boards give up a cut of their share to harder-hit ones. And although the distributions are no longer linked to ICC events as such, if the T20 World Cup doesn’t go ahead, or is fitted into 2021, January’s distributions could also potentially be impacted.

Williams joins Morecambe until JanuaryEarned 19 senior appearances in 2020-21Defender's career has stalled since WHAT HAPPENED?

Williams has signed for Morecambe on loan until January, bolstering the Shrimps' defensive options after a difficult start to the season. Derek Adams' side have lost their opening two games in League Two and will hope the centre-back can help shore up the defence.

AdvertisementGettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Williams' career has stalled since a breakthrough 2020-21 campaign that saw him feature 19 times for Liverpool's senior side under Jurgen Klopp. Loan spells with Swansea City, Blackpool, Aberdeen and Port Vale have followed, but the 23-year-old has managed just 26 appearances since joining the Swans in 2021. His most recent loan spell, in 2023-24 with Vale, lasted only a matter of weeks before he returned to Liverpool due to an injury.

WHAT WILLIAMS SAID

Williams said: "I'm delighted, the manager has given me a chance to come and play football here and that's the main thing. I want him to be able to trust me, I want to come in and impress the fans so hopefully we have a successful season. After speaking to the manager, I always wanted to go and play for him. I spoke to a few of the boys and they were all really complimentary about the club, the staff and fans, so there was only one place I wanted to go. I'm ready to go, the boys seem ready. I know it's early on but, for me, things will change; I can see a good group, a group which works for each other and that's the main thing – as long as you've got the spirit, you'll always get through tough times."

BBC pundit worried for Emery after Aston Villa player news pre-Arsenal

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery is preparing his side for a crunch clash against Arsenal as they bid to beat Spurs to a place in the top four.

Aston Villa travel to Arsenal as Champions League race heats up

The Villans' tough test comes after Tottenham's trip to Newcastle earlier this afternoon, and Emery's side quite simply need to keep chase with them as we fast approach the business end of this campaign.

Aston Villa agree fee to sign £48k-p/w "future superstar" wanted by Arsenal

It's been a remarkable season at Villa Park and one of real promise, as Emery impresses during his first full campaign in the dugout after replacing Steven Gerrard last year.

They've been one of the surprise packages of 2023/24, but their test at the Emirates tomorrow afternoon represents their arguable toughest yet, and Arsenal have it all to play for as well as they look to clinch their first league title in 20 years.

Villa need to pick up again, though, having won just once in their last five top-flight matches. Mikel Arteta's men, meanwhile, boast four wins from their last five and are by far the more superior side in terms of form.

NSWE are looking to back Emery this summer and improve the squad in certain areas, but for now, focus remains very much on the field.

Unfortunately for Emery, Villa are without star midfielder Douglas Luiz for the north London clash, who's been a star player and pivotal to their European push.

Hutton bemoans "huge blow" as Luiz misses Arsenal game

The Brazilian is suspended following his 10th yellow card of the season, meaning he'll be absent from the trip to Arsenal and their following game at home to Bournemouth.

Aston Villa players including Douglas Luiz

Speaking to Villa News, BBC Radio 5 Live pundit Alan Hutton has called Luiz's absence a "huge blow" ahead of Arsenal.

“First and foremost it is a huge blow,” Hutton explained.

“I think he has been one of the outstanding players of this season and for a number of seasons, actually. With everything that he does within the game, he has grown into a kind of leadership role, not only with his performances but on and off the pitch.

“His set plays, everything that he does defensively and moving forward through the thirds so he is going to be a huge blow. I think it’s good that John McGinn is back in because at least he can ease that burden a little bit.

Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz

“I don’t think they will see it as a free hit because they’re there or there about now and they’re aiming for that top four so if you really want to go and compete with these teams, you need to go and show that on the pitch.

“They’ll see it as a huge test. They’ve had a massive game in the Champions League midweek and that could help Villa moving forward if they’re a little bit tired. It’s going to be a huge test for them.”

Ele vem me passando orientações e eu vou absorvendo tudo no dia-a-dia. Vou assimilando isso para o meu bem e sei que assim vou seguir evoluindo aqui no Ceará. Sei que posso crescer muito aqui com a ajuda dos meus companheiros e da comissão’, afirmou o lateral.

Crystal Palace struck gold on 2021 signing who’s now worth more than Olise

Crystal Palace has been the home to many talented players with the club developing the likes of Wilfried Zaha and Aaron Wan-Bissaka from their own academy.

In addition, they have even managed to poach talented prospects from other teams' academies, such as Malcolm Ebiowei and Luke Plange.

However, as in the cases of Zaha and Wan-Bissaka, players often think that the grass is greener elsewhere and wish to take on a new challenge as The Eagles are more often than not battling relegation.

Crystal Palace'sWilfriedZaha

In three of their last five Premier League seasons, Crystal Palace have finished in 14th place, which, for most of England's top-flight players, isn't good enough. Hence, why they seem to lose their most talented prospects each season.

However, one anomaly to this theme is their current player, Marc Guehi. The centre-back was bought by the Eagles in the summer of 2021 for a fee worth around £18m. Upon joining the club, the then 21-year-old was put straight into their starting XI and has never looked back.

Marc Guehi's season in numbers

The 2023/24 season has been yet another season of growth and development for the 23-year-old as he has managed to appear 26 times for his club, even getting an assist in the Premier League.

Guehi has appeared 22 times in the league this term and has missed just one game as he was left absent from the squad during their 3-1 loss to Aston Villa on the 16th September.

marc-guehi-transfer-gossip-crystal-palace-arsenal-edu-arteta-sol-campbell

According to Sofascore, the defender has managed to contribute to four clean sheets in this year's edition of the Premier League which puts him ahead of players such as Casemiro, Ruben Dias and Kostas Tsimikas.

This outlines how important he has been to Roy Hodgson's side this season with this being further backed up by Sofascore who claim that, in England's top flight, Guehi has managed to make 1.2 tackles per game and recover 5.1 balls.

Football Talent Scout – Jacek Kulig has even branded the centre-back as a 'beast' following his performances against Manchester City in 2022.

Regarding his international appearances, although he hasn't yet appeared in a competitive fixture for England this term, the youngster has been in the squad on two occasions for friendlies against both Australia and Scotland.

Marc Guehi's market value in 2024

As with all players who perform to a high standard, there have been many rumours floating around about who Guehi could join at the end of the campaign.

One club who has been consistently linked with the England international is Tottenham. Spurs have had a stellar start to life under Ange Postecoglu as they currently sit in fifth in the Premier League.

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

The London-based club are one of only two teams to have triumphed over Liverpool in the Premier League this season, which showcases the talent their squad possesses.

However, although a move seems very tempting for a player of Guehi's quality, his value may become something of a stumbling block if a transfer is arranged.

Inceed according to transfer expert, Dean Jones, The Eagles could demand a fee in the region of £100m for the youngster whose deal doesn't expire until 2026.

A fee valued in this region would make Guehi's value higher than that of his fellow Crystal Palace teammate, Michael Olise.

Olise was a major talking point across the world of football in over the winter. Teams such as Manchester United and Arsenal were each vying for his transfer and are still reportedly looking into the acquisition of the youngster.

The winger is currently rated at around £60m as this is the reported sum of his release clause which was negotiated into the new deal he signed with The Eagles midway through 2023.

That means, if Crystal Palace manage to generate anywhere near the reported amount that they want for Guehi, the £18m they paid in 2021 will be seen as a 'jackpot' of an investment.

Steven Smith withdrawn from Lord's Test due to concussion

Cricket Australia have become the first team to apply to the ICC for a concussion substitute under the new protocols

Steven Smith was ruled out of the Lord’s Ashes Test and was highly unlikely to take the field in the next Test at Headingley after he became the first cricketer to be formally substituted out of a Test match with concussion, replaced on the final day of the match by Marnus Labuschagne. While Smith had initially passed concussion testing and returned to complete his innings in the hour after he was struck a sickening blow to the neck by Jofra Archer on the fourth afternoon, mandatory subsequent testing on the fifth morning of the match revealed his condition to have deteriorated. On the official notification by the Australian team to the ICC match referee Ranjan Madugalle, Smith’s symptoms were described as “headache, dizziness, feeling slowed down, feeling in a fog, don’t feel right, drowsiness”. He is set to undergo further precautionary scans on his neck to assess whether there is any further damage.”As part of the Cricket Australia concussion protocol, repeat concussion testing of Steve Smith was also performed this morning and demonstrated some deterioration from his testing which is consistent with the emergence of the symptoms he was reporting,” a Cricket Australia spokesman said. “On that basis Steve has been withdrawn from the match by team doctor Richard Saw and the Australia team will lodge an application for a concussion substitute with the ICC match referee in line with the ICC protocol.”Cricket Australia statistics show that 30 percent of concussions in Australian cricket are delayed. It is not uncommon for players to pass their tests and feel well on the day of an injury and then display symptoms 24 – 48 hours later. In terms of Steve’s availability for the third Test, this will be considered over the coming days but the short turnaround to the next Test is not in his favour. Steve’s fitness will be assessed on an ongoing basis.”Steve will undergo a precautionary scan on his neck on Sunday. Despite the unfortunate nature of what has happened, the positive is that the concussion protocol, including the availability of the concussion substitute, which has been recently brought in has served its purpose. A player is no longer under pressure to take the field when he or she displays symptoms of concussion and a side is not disadvantaged having lost a player to a blow to the head or neck.”Each of the ICC, CA and the ECB have their own concussion policies, but all stress the need for caution in dealing with potential or actual concussion cases. CA’s policy, which was used in domestic cricket as a forerunner to the introduction of a concussion protocol for international cricket at the start of this Ashes series, states “in case of uncertainty, the qualified medical officer should always adopt a conservative approach to return to play”.The ECB’s policy is the strongest in terms of fixing a player’s return date: “All symptoms need to be absent for 24 hours before simple cognitive and physical activities can be undertaken. Graded steps of gradual increase in activity must be accompanied by a 24-hour window to check for further symptoms or signs…the player needs a 24-hour window for each level and therefore means no further return to a full training situation for six days.”CA’s policy underlines the fact that a graded return to physical activity is required, and if there is any instance of a deterioration or setback then the process must begin again: “Staged physical activity should be upgraded on a graduated basis with progression through stages and Participants must return to a previous stage if symptoms worsen. A Participant may be required to sit out the duration of a multi-day match and/or further matches if required through the medical review.”Lastly, the ICC’s guidelines make a similar statement but also add that a typical recovery process will take about seven days to complete. The third Ashes Test at Headingley is scheduled to begin on Thursday, as the second of back to back Tests. “If at any of these stages symptoms return the player should drop back an exercise level,” ICC guidelines state. “If the player is a student they may require a couple of days off school to rest.”A player should not return to full training if unable to attend school or work without symptoms returning. A concussed player requires a formal medical clearance to return to training and play and never permitted to return on the day of the injury. Usually a player will recover in about seven days but this can vary from individual to individual.”

Tom Banton fires as Somerset gun down target of 181

Glamorgan fall short of competitive total despite fifties from David Lloyd and Colin Ingram

ECB Reporters Network18-Jul-2019Somerset got off to a winning start at Sophia Gardens as they defeated an inexperienced Glamorgan team featuring three T20 debutants by wickets, with two overs to spare.Despite an excellent start, Glamorgan should have scored in excess of 200, but instead of consolidating they lost three wickets in three overs and were grateful that Colin Ingram enabled them to reach a challenging total.Needing 181 to win at nine runs an over, Somerset emulated Glamorgan with Tom Banton scoring 22 from Marchant De Lange’s opening over and 50 coming from only four overs. On a perfect batting pitch, runs continued to be plundered with Somerset 75 for 0 after six overs, four runs more than Glamorgan.Banton soon reached fifty with a high proportion of boundaries – five sixes and four fours – as Somerset raced to 100 in the 9th over and well in control. They did lose Pakistan batsman Babar Azam to Dan Douthwaite, and in the following over Banton’s excellent innings of 64 ended when Billy Root held on to a fine catch at deep midwicket. The experience of James Hildreth and Peter Trego saw Somerset reach their target with ease, while Glamorgan will reflect on their failure to capitalise on a good start, while their bowlers need to improve their accuracy.Earlier, Glamorgan who were put in, made 180 for 5 after a rapid start, reaching 50 in the fourth over and 70 at the end of the six-over Powerplay. Jeremy Lawlor, making his debut in the competition, set the tone by striking early boundaries and lifting Jamie Overton over long-on for six.Somerset used five bowlers in the first five overs, but apart from Roelof van der Merwe, no one was able to stem the stem of runs. The opening partnership of 82 was broken in the ninth over when Lawlor, who scored 43 from 30 balls, was caught on the long-off boundary off van der Merwe. After reaching 95 for 1 at the halfway stage, Glamorgan fell away in mid-innings, and had Ingram not blasted a 28-ball half-century, their score would have been well below par.David Lloyd, was the next to go after scoring 57 from 37 balls when he was deceived by Craig Overton’s slower ball, giving short square leg a simple catch. Two wickets then fell for three runs as Chris Cooke became van der Merwe’s second victim and Douthwaite fell for 2.With one over remaining, Glamorgan were 153 for 5 but Ingram, relatively quiet until then, suddenly exploded by hitting Craig Overton for three sixes and two fours, with 27 coming from the over.

Spurs must unleash "magic" £40k-p/w whiz alongside Dier

Tottenham Hotspur have returned to form in the Premier League but this will not be on the mind of manager Ange Postecoglou as he readies his ranks for the start of their FA Cup campaign tonight, taking on Burnley at home.

It's been 15 interminable years since silverware last graced Spurs' cabinet, and while the past several campaigns have been turbulent, Postecoglou's summer appointment has leavened the atmosphere and there is a growing feeling that prosperity could be down the road.

But having crashed out of the Carabao Cup at the first hurdle and remaining comfortable outsiders in the Premier League title race – also not playing on the continent this term after last year's struggle – the FA Cup marks the most realistic chance of ending that trophy drought right now.

Young centre-forward Alejo Veliz has joined Tottenham's bloated injury list after hurting his knee during last week's victory over Bournemouth, with Postecoglou grudgingly confirming he faces a few months on the sidelines.

Micky van de Ven could be named in the matchday squad as he approaches a return from a hamstring injury that has ruled him out for two months, though it is unlikely that he will start.

The players that should start vs Burnley

It's rather impressive that Postecoglou has successfully kept injury-riddled Spurs in contention for top four over the past several months given the enormity of the injury situation, and while FA Cup success will be desired, he will make several rotations.

Van de Ven will not start but the Lilywhites boss might be inclined to hand Eric Dier a rare opportunity from the outset, with the England international on the periphery this term.

trevoh-chalobah-eric-dier-tottenham-opinion

Out of contract at the end of the campaign, Dier has only started once in the Premier League but will be in contention to start today, with makeshift centre-back partnership Emerson Royal and Ben Davies likely being rotated.

Further up the pitch, Bryan Gil could also be in line for a rare starting role as Postecoglou looks to keep things fresh, and while Tottenham's list of absences makes heavy rotation somewhat challenging, Brennan Johnson could move to the bench after starting eight of the past nine league games.

richarlison-bryan-gil-tottenham-opinion

Gil, aged 22, has been used sporadically of late, and while there appear to be lingering questions regarding his physicality, there is no question that he is an elegant and artful winger, having once been said to be "like Bernardo Silva" by former Spurs manager Antonio Conte.

The £40k-per-week Spaniard is intelligent and capable of "moments of magic" – as was once said by journalist Rob Guest – and while it hasn't worked out thus far, the forthcoming cup tie marks a good opportunity to prove his worth.

Time is probably running out, and should be get given the nod later today, a promising performance will be paramount to ensure that he keeps a place in the squad and finally starts living up to that potential that is clearly in there somewhere.
