Nathan Redmond reveals that Ralph Hasenhuttl has told him to stop standing still

[ad_pod ]

In-form Southampton attacker Nathan Redmond has opened up to The Daily Echo on his one-to-one meeting with manager Ralph Hasenhuttl during the squad’s training camp in Tenerife earlier this month, saying that the Austrian told him to stop ‘standing still’.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the 51-year-old boss had a discussion with and provided feedback on every player in the squad that was present for the trip to the Canary Island, which included Redmond.

The 24-year-old has been in scintillating form since Hasenhuttl was appointed as Mark Hughes’ successor back in December, scoring six goals and providing a further two assists in all competitions.

However, despite being arguably the south coast outfit’s best player in the last couple of months, the former Norwich City man revealed to The Daily Echo that he wasn’t exempt from having things to work on and improve.

Redmond said: “In terms of the negatives, he told me to not stand still as much. He noticed at the start when he first came in that I stood still and that I was waiting for things to happen.

“He said I was still standing still a little bit, but not as much as before.

“There are a lot of things like decision making and stuff, but at the end of the day if I want to keep developing and performing in this team, then I have to take it on board.”

Is Hasenhuttl right?

He probably is, yes.

While Redmond has clearly stepped it up in terms of being a big threat in the final third for Southampton in recent times, there are still obviously more ways in which he can affect matches for his side.

Hasenhuttl clearly wants the one-cap England international to be more aware and on his toes, providing that movement to help his teammates out when they are looking for forward passes.

It is the sort of contructive criticism that can make the 24-year-old an even better player than the one he is showing he is right now, and that can only benefit Saints in their battle against relegation.

Tottenham fans rocked by another injury blow

[ad_pod ]Tottenham Hotspur have been rocked by news of yet another injury blow.Ben Davies limped out of the club’s Carabao Cup semi-final defeat to Chelsea on Thursday, and the club have confirmed that he will now miss this weekend’s FA Cup tie against Crystal Palace.Moussa Sissoko, who made his comeback from a groin injury against the Blues, sustained a knee injury in that game, and may also be unavailable, with further assessments to take place this weekend.Spurs are already without striker Harry Kane and midfielder Dele Alli, while Son Heung-Min is still with South Korea on international duty. However, his side lost to Qatar on Friday and have been eliminated from the Asian Cup, meaning he will soon be available for selection.CheekySport’s Joel claims Spurs badly need to invest in January after not having “the balls” to beat Arsenal. Check out his uncensored opinion in the video below…The news of Davies and Sissoko’s injuries will come as a major disappointment to manager Mauricio Pochettino, who is already working with the bare bones of a thin squad. He may well be able to deploy Victor Wanyama against the Eagles after his return to fitness, but that may prove scant consolation, particularly given Sissoko’s excellent displays thus far this season. And Spurs fans have called on the club to finally dip into the transfer market to reinforce the squad, having seen the side fail to add a new player for the last two windows.

Losing Ryan Kent in summer could be a big loss for Steven Gerrard’s Rangers

Steven Gerrard’s Rangers have played some stunning attacking football this season and a youngster to have helped that is young Ryan Kent.

The loanee from Liverpool has become a fan-favourite at Glasgow, with his electric demeanour producing brilliant moments throughout the season.

Kent’s been a nightmare for defenders in the Scottish Premiership, lighting up The Light Blues’ left wing. Not only is Kent a pacy winger, but his close-control and dribbling ability are also unprecedented. The 22-year-old has turned out to be a Steven Gerrard favourite, as the gaffer’s given him the opportunities and freedom to express himself.

Kent has scored 5 goals and assisted 4 so far for the Light Blues, forming excellent chemistry with his team-mates. He’s shown impressive ability to wheeze past his opponents on the left flank, often bamboozling defenders with his cunning trickery.

A confident man going forward, Kent also possesses the ability to make inwards into the box and going all the way to score amazing goals. The youngster’s dribbling prowess was on show against Celtic when he provided a delightful assist for Ryan Jack’s winner.

The left-winger’s heroics against Celtic, whom he terrorized with his pace and trickery, proved how crucial he is to their fast-paced attacking style. However, Jurgen Klopp’s also licking his lips watching Kent’s growth and probably can’t wait to have him back. Indeed, Gary McAllister hinted (via the Scottish Sun) there’s little chance of keeping him at Ibrox, making it all a bittersweet for Rangers fans right now.

Clearly a level above most other players north of the border, it’ll be very hard to replace him in the summer, especially in their price range. Still, if he can help the Gers win a title, who really cares?

What will be Liverpool’s gain is a huge loss to Rangers, who are growing more reliant on Kent’s influence to play their best football.

West Ham poised to sign youngster Dju

[ad_pod ]

West Ham United are poised to sign Mesaque Dju on a free transfer from Benfica, per Football.London.

The teenager was to undergo a medical with the Irons on Tuesday and will initially play for the club’s Under-23 squad.

What’s the word?

West Ham have agreed a free transfer to sign the 19-year-old from Benfica, per the aforementioned report.

The deal also reportedly includes a 50% sell-on clause payable to the Portuguese club if the Irons move Dju on in the coming years.

Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below…

Per Transfermarkt, the 19-year-old has been capped at numerous youth levels by Portugal, playing for the Under-16s, Under-17s, Under-18s, Under-19s and Under-20s. He has won the European Championship at U17 and U19 level.

Dju has played 13 times for Benfica’s UEFA Under-19s team and has also racked up eight appearances for the club’s B team. A right-winger, he is remarkably quick and enjoys getting chalk on his boots on the flank.

West Ham youth academy thriving

This is remarkably exciting for West Ham fans.

A move for the teenager proves that the club is an attractive destination for young players as gems continue to come through.

Xande Silva has already moved from Portugal to east London and the two will now link up in the Under-23 squad, with a clear path laid out to the first-team.

The likes of Declan Rice and Grady Diangana have graduated from the youth team to the first-team squad already and the former has since been marked out as one of the finest young players in the country.

And it would not be surprising to see Dju eventually pull on the claret and blue at the London Stadium – the contract is due to include a two-year option, meaning the Irons will be able to extend the teenager’s deal if he develops as expected.

Tottenham fans loved Llorente’s impact off the bench against Newcastle

[ad_pod ]

Son Heung-Min struck late for Tottenham Hotspur to secure a 1-0 win over Newcastle United at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.

The goal came in the 83rd minute, after Spurs had dominated for much of the game but failed to break the deadlock. According to the BBC’s stats, Mauricio Pochettino’s side had 72 per cent of the possession and mustered 21 shots, compared to the Magpies’ eight.

Be sure to check out the incredible story of the man who rose from a Tanzanian refugee camp to become one of Australia’s biggest football stars in the video below…

After much toil, the goal eventually came when Fernando Llorente chested down a ball to Son on the edge of the area, who then drilled the ball through the hands of Martin Dubravka, who should have been able to keep it out.

Llorente’s presence on the pitch allowed Spurs to play a more direct game, which ultimately led to the goal. The 33-year-old Spaniard was introduced in the 60th minute and was able to have a game-changing impact.

After the final whistle, plenty of Spurs fans took to Twitter to celebrate the 6’4” striker’s all-important impact on the match…

Alejandro Grimaldo would be a perfect fit at Arsenal in the summer

Unai Emery will reportedly (as per the Sun) target a new left-back when the transfer window reopens in the summer.

The former PSG boss was handed minimal funds during January and could only secure the loan addition of Denis Suarez despite wanting defensive reinforcements. Instead, Emery will be forced to put his transfer plans on hold until the summer. Working with a new director of football, identifying a new left-back will be a priority.

Sead Kolasinac has been extremely inconsistent since joining from Schalke and Nacho Monreal has struggled massively with injuries as he approaches the twilight of his career. Emery is set to be given just a small amount of money to work with yet again but a new left-sided defender should be the main focus.

One man the Gunners could look to recruit is Benfica flyer – Alejandro Grimaldo. Valued at £25.2m by Transfermarkt, the Spaniard is a graduate of Barcelona’s famed academy but ultimately failed to make the grade at the Nou Camp. Instead, Grimaldo joined Benfica for a nominal fee in 2016 and has proven to be an inspired addition at the club.

The 23-year-old has established himself as one of the best full-backs in the division, helping his side lift two Portuguese league titles. Grimaldo is a potent attacking threat from the back, scoring five goals and registering five assists so far this season. With blistering pace and brilliant crossing ability, the former Spain U21 international has all the attributes to be a massive success in the Premier League.

Still developing and improving, Grimaldo would thrive under Emery’s world-class management. Moving to England could be just what he needs to cement a spot in the senior Spain national team.

The Chalkboard: How West Ham can pull off a shock result against Manchester City

[ad_pod ]

West Ham United face a tough task on Wednesday as they travel to the Etihad Stadium to take on reigning Premier League champions Manchester City.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side travel to face the Chilean coach’s former club in good form, having gone unbeaten in their last three league outings.

However, Pep Guardiola’s City side will be heavy favourites to secure victory in midweek, and it will take a special effort from the Hammers to achieve a positive result.

How much money could you make busking for a week as a freestyle footballer? Find out in the video below…

On the chalkboard

Although they ultimately lost on penalties in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday, Chelsea showed that City can be shut out. The Irons can take confidence from this, as they can from the draws they’ve already earned against the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool this season themselves.

Pellegrini should take heed of the lessons that can be learned from these performances. West Ham have the capacity to secure a result against City, if they are set up correctly and execute their gameplan diligently.

The gameplan

West Ham must be prepared to sit back and soak up pressure. In the likes of Declan Rice, Issa Diop and Aaron Cresswell they have defensively-minded players capable of committing themselves to this task with discipline and focus.

The Irons must also pose a threat on the counter attack. The pace of Michail Antonio and the invention of Felipe Anderson could be key to unlocking the City defence if given the opportunity on the break.

Liverpool want Bruno Fernandes

[ad_pod ]

According to Correio de Manha via The Mirror, Sporting’s Bruno Fernandes is on Liverpool’s radar as Jurgen Klopp looks to add to his attacking contingent having missed out on signing Lyon’s Nabil Fekir. Could he be the missing piece in the jigsaw?

What’s the word?

Well, The Mirror reports (via Correio de Manha) that the Portuguese is a target for both AC Milan and the Reds as the club look to negotiate his exit amid crushing debt that amounts to around €281m.

The midfielder’s release clause of €100million (£87m) is unlikely to be met by either of the aforementioned suitors and Sporting will surely have to negotiate a lower price in order to get the player off their books.

Having already seen the likes of William Carvalho and Rui Patricio leave over the summer in controversial fashion, the Lisbon-based outfit could be set to lose yet another star at the end of the season. What would be their undoubted loss, though, would be of enormous benefit to Jurgen Klopp and his side.

Finally… a playmaker

Klopp’s tactical flexibility has seen the Reds flirt with a 4-2-3-1 and a 4-4-2, while also frequenting the 4-3-3 that has helped them become masters of Gegenpressing.

The former has required centre-forward Roberto Firmino to be deployed in the number 10 role while Mohamed Salah has been moved up front. Although the famous front three’s linkup is as glorious as ever, there still remains the lack of an out-and-out playmaker.

Bayern Munich were resolute in their defending at Anfield on Tuesday night and it was clear the home side were crying out for a player who could create something out of nothing and unpick the Bavarians’ defence with a special pass, as pinpointed by frustrated Reds fans below…

This has been a weakness of Liverpool’s since the departure of Philippe Coutinho and Klopp surely feels this needs addressing. Fekir was intended to plug this gap but a switch to Merseyside never materialised and so the title challengers remain an incomplete puzzle.

Are fan nerves to blame for Liverpool’s recent form? Pl>ymaker FC’s Tom Skinner discusses in the video below…

If Manchester City prove too good once again this term, the signing of 24-year-old Fernandes, who has chalked up an impressive 21 goals and 11 assists in 2018/19, could be the addition that takes the Reds beyond their title rivals next season.
