Parker was speaking to Sky Sports about the unexpected transfer. The Clarets boss revealed his admiration for the seven-time Premier League winner, sharing that Walker impressed him during their two seasons together as teammates at Tottenham.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Walker joined the newly promoted team on a two-year deal, for a reported fee of £5m. Parker suggested the 35-year-old was open to the deal because he was excited about the challenge, suggesting the Premier League legend will "push every ounce of himself" to help the Clarets achieve success in the upcoming season.

  • WHAT PARKER SAID

Parker said of the deal: "It was a few conversations over the summer really and probably from the outset, when we were engaging in conversation, I played with Kyle, he was a young player at Spurs, I was at the other end of my career and I saw his talent. What he has gone on to achieve is nothing short of remarkable really and fully deserved. I think like anything, when there is an opportunity for someone of Kyle’s quality and ability, and we are in a race for that, it was one that excited me, for sure.

The Burnley boss added: “I think the biggest thing I can say to Kyle is when I was speaking to him was the challenges he speaks about. This is a guy that every season has had a challenge, that challenge is probably different now but the feeling he gives me, and I know him, is it’s a challenge he is absolutely relishing. What gets this human being up every morning is knowing there is a challenge ahead.

“No doubt, Kyle could have had other opportunities for sure. But I think the challenge of this next thing for him is what gets him out of bed, it’s one he’s engaged with, one he’s going to drive, one he’s going to push every ounce of himself to try and get us to be successful this year. For me, of course, the quality is there and what he’s achieved is there and I hope he brings every bit of that to this young squad and pushes us as far as we can go really.”

    WHAT NEXT FOR WALKER?

That embrace of the challenge will likely be a mantra shared by Parker with other members of Burnley's squad. The Clarets will have their work cut out to remain in the Premier League, especially given the recent history of promoted teams immediately falling back into the Championship. Walker will add nous to a backline that excelled last season. Burnley conceded just 16 goals in their 46 league games.

Man Utd pre-season: Six things to look out for as Ruben Amorim looks to get Red Devils back on track

The next month is a huge chance for the squad to get to grips with the coach's system as they look to make amends for an abysmal campaign

Real Madrid, Arsenal, Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund were some of the teams Manchester United faced in their last two pre-season tours of the United States. Their opponents for their upcoming jaunt to the USA are a little less glamorous: West Ham United, Everton and Bournemouth.

The contrast in calibre of opponents says a lot about how much United have fallen in stature, particularly on the global stage. Indeed, most of the teams United see themselves as competing against are not visiting the US at all this year. Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham and Newcastle are all touring Asia, while Chelsea and Manchester City have already been across the pond to compete at the Club World Cup.

It is not just United's pre-season fixtures which lack inspiration. The club have been very slow to act in the transfer market, only announcing the arrival of Matheus Cunha and confirming the pre-agreed deal for Paraguayan teenager Diego Leon. The expected signing of Bryan Mbeumo has stalled, while there has been even bleaker news over shifting players.

Despite the general lack of buzz, the next month is crucial for United as they prepare to make amends for last season, which Ruben Amorim openly admitted was "a disaster".

The Red Devils kick off their run of pre-season friendlies on Saturday against Leeds in Stockholm before heading off to the States to take part in the summer series. They will face West Ham at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, later meet Bournemouth at Soldier Field in Chicago before ending their tour against Everton at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Then, it's back to Old Trafford for one final friendly against David de Gea's Fiorentina before beginning the campaign with a daunting opening fixture at home to Arsenal.

Here are six things to look out for as Amorim and his squad get to work…

Getty The goalkeeper situation

Andre Onana was on thin ground when he reported for pre-season training, with his status as United's No. 1 being debated after a second unconvincing campaign. Less than a week later, he injured his hamstring while training, ruling him out of their first few games of the pre-season, if not the whole set of warm-up fixtures.

The injury presents a big problem for United because while Onana has his many critics, the other options between the sticks are even less convincing. Altay Bayindir has made headlines for the wrong reasons in nearly every game he has played and it is thought he wants to leave the club in search of more regular football. Third-choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton, meanwhile, is 39 and has not played a first team match since February 2023.

Amorim could use the games to blood youngsters Elyh Harrison (19), Radek Vitek (21) or Dermot Mee (22), and there is an outside chance the club could enter the transfer market for a goalkeeper. It is far from an ideal situation for the club, who thought they wouldn't have to worry about the position after signing Onana from Inter for £47 million ($63m) just two years ago.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesHow Cunha settles in

Cunha has been heralded as a transformative signing and all eyes will be on him throughout pre-season and when the proper campaign begins. Chief executive Omar Berrada has already compared him to Eric Cantona, while the 26-year-old, who was born the day after United completed the treble in 1999, has also been given the prestigious No. 10 shirt -, taking it from Marcus Rashford before the England striker has even found a new club.

Cunha has made all the right noises since United paid his £62.5m buy-out clause to prise him from Wolves, revealing how he used to watch the Red Devils at his grandmother's house, and wearing the club's shirt while playing football with friends back in his hometown over the summer. Now, he must make a strong impression on the pitch.

It is no secret that Cunha has a fierce will to win which has landed him in trouble in the recent past, so he must make sure that he channels his massive personality in the right way and gets on the right side of his new team-mates. He also has the talismanic quality that United need so badly, which should make him so compelling to watch.

Getty How much authority will Amorim have?

Most coaches who had presided over a club's worst season in 51 years would go into the next campaign under a cloud of uncertainty but Amorim paradoxically still exerts a lot of authority, as he has done from day one. He cast the homegrown Rashford out of the squad barely a month after taking charge and has since told Alejandro Garnacho, one of the few attacking talents left in the squad, that he too has to go.

The coach also appears to be having a big say in United's transfer policy, as they are primarily targeting players who have already proven themselves in the Premier League and who have experience playing in a 3-4-2-1 formation. It will be interesting to see how the players respond to him and if there will be any more personality clashes. This, after all, is a coach who smashed a television after a defeat to Brighton and described his team as one of the worst in United's history.

Amorim must be looking forward to the pre-season campaign as his team are still a long way from getting to grips with his desired style of play. It is also an opportunity for him to raise the fitness levels of the squad, which he soon realised were way below a lot of teams in the league. The fact United will come up against four Premier League teams over the next month should benefit the coach. But it also adds some pressure, as a bad run of results in pre-season will not bode well for when the real action begins.

Getty Images SportHojlund's state of mind

Rasmus Hojlund looked like a spent force towards the end of last season. He scored just three goals in the 34 matches between December and May and at times it felt like he couldn't wait for the campaign to come to an end. Even the post-season tour of Asia was a nightmare for the hapless Dane as he failed to score against ASEAN All Stars or Hong Kong and then watched as the 17-year-old Chido Obi fired United to a comeback win after replacing him in the latter game.

Gary Neville described Hojlund as being "shot" during his 21-game goal drought and his confidence looked to be on the floor for much of the season. His state of mind will not have been helped by reports of United searching for another centre-forward and looking at the likes of Hugo Ekitike, Liam Delap, Moise Kean and Ollie Watkins.

Hojlund's last two summers at United have been traumatic affairs. A back injury prevented him from going on the pre-season tour of 2023 just after his big-money move from Atalanta, while he injured his hamstring in the opening match of last year's US tour against Arsenal. A promising and injury-free pre-season could be the start of him finally realising his potential and paying back his £72m transfer fee. Equally, if he fails to fire and has a miserable time in the States, either he or the club might look to hasten his departure.

India ready for rare home Test in England's special 100th

Big picture – England Women to play their 100th Test

After a turnaround of just two days from the third T20I, India and England gear up for a Test. Not just any other Test. The first women’s Test hosted by India since 2014. The first women’s Test in India for England since 2005. The first for India after the retirements of Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami.India were training for it like they do for any other game, and the focus was on mixing attack with defence.India have maintained that they don’t want to be overawed by the occasion of a Test match, a rare occurrence for them. “Unlike T20s where every third or fourth ball is aerial shot, that is the only thing we have to tell ourselves. If someone has aerial shots as their first, that is their way. How Shafali [Verma] bats and I bat is different and you can’t expect both of us to bat in a particular mould,” Smriti Mandhana had said on Tuesday.Related

  • Beaumont: 'Not the right time for a women's WTC yet'

Harmanpreet Kaur alluded to it on the eve of the Test: “The best thing [head coach Amol Muzumdar] said was, go with your best batting style and don’t think about changing it because it is red-ball cricket. If you are an aggressive batter, play aggressively. If you like to build your innings, then do that. Back yourself and your batting style, because we hardly have time to change things in batting.”The sun was beating down by the time England walked out to train in the afternoon, and they had a method to how they went about with their preparation. It is not often that the women play Tests, but England have done it 99 times already and the Navi Mumbai game against India will be their 100th.In the press conference, England captain Heather Knight did not reveal who would partner Tammy Beaumont at the top, after Emma Lamb’s injury. The only aspect England have to choose is one middle-order spot. The toss-up is likely between Sophia Dunkley and Alice Capsey, who also bowls offspin. While Dunkley was having a bat at the nets, Capsey was seen taking high catches and underwent some intense fielding drills, too, before facing a combination of throwdowns and a net bowler. While England will head back home after this one-off Test, it is just the start for India, who are to play back-to-back Test matches for the first time, with Australia up next later this month.England Women will play their first Test in India since 2005•ECB via Getty Images

In the spotlight – Harmanpreet Kaur and Nat Sciver-Brunt

Often in the recent past, Harmanpreet Kaur has found herself at the centre of the most crucial moments of Indian women’s cricket. She was part of the first WPL match and also led Mumbai Indians to the title in the first iteration. Her 171 not out in the 2017 ODI World Cup is part of folklore. She is only three Tests old and is all set to captain India in the one-off match for the first time in the format. It was easy to spot Harmanpreet two days out of the game, in the group of Indian players training – she was the only one with the Test white trackpants. During her batting stints, she was focusing on her footwork – consciously trying to get the front-foot forward against fast bowling to defend – and worked on judging the line and length to leave balls. She starred with the ball in the last Test India played at home; all eyes – around 40,000 no less if the turnout is good – will be on her yet again. Is Nat Sciver-Brunt ever not a threat? The DY Patil Stadium was one of the venues of WPL 2023, where she finished second on the batting charts. She scored an unbeaten 169 against South Africa in the drawn Taunton Test last year and 78 in the Ashes Test at Trent Bridge this June. On the eve of the match, she batted a short while with both Sophie Ecclestone and Charlie Dean bowling in tandem and looked in good touch. Sciver-Brunt also showed a glimpse of her importance with the ball in the T20Is against India. After picking up a knee injury during the Ashes, she played the Hundred and the home ODIs against Sri Lanka purely as a batter. She started bowling towards the end of the WBBL and could take on a lesser workload with the ball in the Test.

Team news

“If we look at the pitch and decide the combination, it will be different but if we look at our strengths, it will be a different combination. I would like to go with our strengths,” Harmanpreet said without giving an inclination to the bowling combination India are likely to field. Renuka Singh is returning from a stress injury but could be in line for a Test debut. It is likely India will go in with three seamers, like was the case in their last two Test outings in 2021.India (possible): 1 Shafali Verma, 2 Smriti Mandhana, 3 Jemimah Rodrigues, 4 Harmanpreet Kaur (capt), 5 Yastika Bhatia, 6 Deepti Sharma, 7 Richa Ghosh/Pooja Vastrakar, 8 Sneh Rana, 9 Rajeshwari Gayakwad, 10 Renuka Singh, 11 Meghna SinghIndia will rely on their seniors Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur in the Test match•PTI

With opener Lamb out injured, England’s main challenge will be around who partners Beaumont. Dunkley is an option given she is used to the job in white-ball cricket, which could also mean a Test debut for Capsey. The other spot in focus will be the second seamer’s – between Lauren Filer, who impressed with her raw pace in the Ashes, and Lauren Bell.England (possible): 1 Tammy Beaumont, 2 Sophia Dunkley, 3 Heather Knight (capt), 4 Nat Sciver-Brunt, 5 Alice Capsey, 6 Danni Wyatt, 7 Amy Jones (wk), 8 Sophie Ecclestone, 9 Charlie Dean, 10 Kate Cross, 11 Lauren Filer/Lauren Bell

Pitch and conditions

On the eve of the Test, the pitch wore a brown look with very little grass on it. The word is that it will aid spin but both the captains said it would be skiddy. “It might not turn more and will be skiddy even for the spinners,” Harmanpreet said with Knight almost agreeing: “Spin has skidded on a bit more. We trained on the other ground yesterday and it was almost like a day one wicket where spin skidded on. Did a little bit with the ball, a little bit of swing and a bit of nip.”Mornings in Mumbai and its suburbs have been pleasant with the effect of the sun felt in the afternoon, when the temperature crosses the 30-degree-celcius mark. All four days are expected to be similar weather-wise.

Quotes

“Butterlies [in the stomach] are always there, no matter how much you have played. There is always excitement and nervousness when you go to the ground. When you play one ball, you get totally involved in the game. Last Test I missed because of injury and this time there is an opportunity to lead the team. The talk has been about being positive and playing with excitement.”
“Any person we choose to open with Tammy [Beaumont] has no experience of doing it in Test match cricket and it’s not an easy place to bat. Whoever does that role is going to be brand new. We are going to pick our best six batters that we are going to think are going to score us the most runs to try and set up the Test match.”

'Inspirational' Aston Villa No.1 Emi Martinez receives surprise support for Chelsea transfer from France legend after controversial Argentina antics

Former Chelsea and Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit has backed Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez to join the Blues this summer, claiming the Argentine could be an "inspiration" in their dressing room. Martinez appeared to bid a tearful goodbye to Aston Villa fans after their final home game of the 2024-25 campaign against Tottenham in May, though he has yet to publicly confirm he wants to leave the club.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Despite his links to United, ex-France star Petit thinks that Emi Martinez's next destination should be Chelsea, despite his controversial antics on and off the pitch for both his national team and club.

  • WHAT PETIT SAID

Speaking to , the 54-year-old said: "Emiliano Martinez would be an inspiration in the Chelsea dressing room. I have criticised his behaviour in the past but he knows what it takes to win titles; he has that experience. He can inspire other players and he has all the qualities needed of a top goalkeeper. He would be a very good signing for Chelsea and 32 isn’t old for a goalkeeper. I think he’d link well with Enzo Maresca and the players already at the club. Australia player reactions: 'I think this is bigger than 2015'

Reactions from the Australian players after winning the World Cup

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Nov-20231:39

Where does this rank among Australia’s World Cup wins?

Josh Hazlewood: “I think this is bigger [than 2015]. Obviously we had won at home in front of our home fans, but the challenges we’ve been through in the last couple of months – coming here, and playing in those conditions against India, which is a pretty special team. Again, to win on a day like this is amazing. Such a great crowd; the Indian fans are second to none. A couple had started leaving there towards the end, but some crowd! I think that’s just the belief that’s in the squad. The first two games [against India and South Africa] were against probably two of the better teams in the competition, but to sort of be knocking on wood the whole tournament basically, and [we’ve] just been on a run. I think tonight was our perfect game just about. We put it together when it counts.”Marnus Labuschagne: “What we’ve achieved today is unbelievable. It’s the best achievement I’ve ever been part of. Just to come to India… ten from ten with one to play – they’ve been the team of the tournament, they’ve played unbelievably. But you knew if we played our best cricket, we had a chance. Our bowlers were sensational, and then Travis [Head] put on a hell of a display. It’s great to be a part of it. I know you guys know I’m a man of faith, and believe in god. The way everything’s happened is unbelievable to me. It’s just amazing; I’m lost for words. The amount of times I thought I’m done – even last night the team didn’t get named until about 10.10 [pm]. Coaches went to the ground – might be dewy, I might be out. I’m very thankful to them for sticking with me. I don’t have many words to explain. Few months ago, I wasn’t even in South Africa in the one-day team; and to play 19 games straight is truly a miracle. I don’t know how; I give thanks to god for that.”Related

Cummins pleased Australia 'saved the best for last'

As it happened – India vs Australia, World Cup 2023, final

Travis Head: “Yeah, would’ve been sitting on the couch at home [if he had not recovered from injury in time]. So yeah, very lucky that everything went well. And I was able to get back here… Yeah, I was a little bit nervous. Marnus was quite exceptional. That really soaked up the pressure and yeah, it was just an amazing partnership [of 192 runs for the fourth wicket].”Felt like the way when Mitch Marsh came out and took the game on, albeit didn’t go on with, it sort of set the tone and that was the energy that we wanted, and we knew that the wicket may get tough. It was a great decision to bowl first when we won the toss, and the wicket got better as the day went on.”Probably [Rohit Sharma’s] the unluckiest man in the world. Again, it’s something that I’ve worked on. I couldn’t imagine being 100 but could imagine probably holding on to that one [catch]. Again, nice to hold on to something that’s important… To be able to do that on a big stage in front of the full house and all that pressure is a nice thing.”Travis Head took a truly stunning catch to dismiss Rohit Sharma•Associated Press

Mitchell Starc: “He [Cummins] was phenomenal. I think he’s been phenomenal all tournament. His decision making, his leadership, at times he’s needed to step up with the ball when it’s a bit flat. He’s been phenomenal for us and he’s just capped off an unbelievable eight weeks with this group.”Between Pat, Ron [Andrew McDonald], all that coaching staff, all the players across the formats, it’s been an incredible winter. I don’t think you could write a script to top the winter we’ve had. To win a World Cup in India – it’s been a fantastic eight weeks, bit tough but gee whiz! It’s been bloody successful and bloody enjoyable.”David Warner: “Our bowlers were fantastic, the sort of flow from last game, they set the tone from ball one and the fielding again tonight supported that. To bowl them [India] out for 240 in the final is absolutely exceptional. There was a bit of nervous energy up in the change room [during the chase]. We sat in the dressing-room part, we sat in the lunchroom part, came in at one stage for a look. Fantastic partnership there with Marnus and Heady. What an incredible comeback from Heady, [got] injured in South Africa, come back in and score his hundred in his first game and a hundred here tonight in front of a jam-packed crowd. He was just absolutely phenomenal.”Steven Smith: “It’s incredible, the atmosphere was amazing here today. It was just a great performance. As Davey just said, our bowlers really set the tone, fielding was great this evening. Travis Head, the show he put on was just incredible. [He] took the game on even when we were 3 for 60-odd [47 for 3], just kept going, kept playing to his strengths. I thought Marnus played an unbelievable knock at the other end in a supporting role. It was a great partnership, and yeah, another one [World Cup title].Two-time ODI World Cup winners – Glenn Maxwell, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Steven Smith, Josh Hazlewood, David Warner, and Mitchell Marsh – strike a pose with the trophy•ICC/Getty Images

“Wasn’t the ideal start for us [in the tournament]. Yeah, we had belief that we got a good group of players here, great staff and we had belief that we were going to turn around and, fortunately, we were able to do that and get ourselves into the top four, and then it’s a whole new ball game from there. Australia typically plays pretty well in those moments, and yeah, it’s another dream come true today to win another final. It’s been a pretty big year for us, winning the Test championship and then this, and it’s been great fun.”Glenn Maxwell: “It feels amazing. I think we all pretty much got excited when it got down to 20 [required]. I had sort of resigned to the fact that I wouldn’t have to bat – much like [in] 2015 – but unfortunately Heady got out. But it was nice to be out there with Marnus [at the end], and have the guys come out, and what a win! It’s a bit different when you watch Heady take on [Jasprit] Bumrah; not so often you’re next in… but how good were those two! Marnus soaked the pressure out there – he was absolutely outstanding – and Heady, that ball-striking under pressure in a final was second to none.”Mitchell Marsh: “Pure elation. I said to a few boys just earlier – it’s been hard. We won when Sri Lanka were 0 for 120; that feels like a lifetime ago. But to be here with this group, it’s unbelievable.”

Nathan Lyon joins 500 Test-wicket club as Australia crush Pakistan in Perth

Massive 360-run win set up by Usman Khawaja and Mitchell Marsh’s partnership, before visitors folded for 89

Tristan Lavalette17-Dec-2023Offspinner Nathan Lyon claimed his 500th Test wicket as Australia’s formidable attack crushed hapless a Pakistan on a difficult Optus Stadium surface to win the first Test inside four days.In the middle of the final session, with victory imminent for Australia, Lyon became the eighth bowler to reach the milestone when he dismissed Faheem Ashraf lbw on review to spark jubilant scenes of celebration among the Australia players and the sparse crowd of 9000 fans. He joined Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath as the only Australians to the landmark.Lyon then clean bowled Aamer Jamal later in the over to cap a successful return, after taking five wickets for the match in his comeback from a calf injury that had prematurely ended his Ashes series. Pakistan, who lasted only 30.2 overs in their second innings, crumbled on a wicket that was spicy throughout and deteriorated as the match wore on, with rearing deliveries contrasted by balls that crept low. Set 450 to win after Australia declared 30 minutes into the second session, Pakistan succumbed to brilliant bowling from quicks Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins. They already faced a daunting task to avoid a 15th straight Test defeat in Australia, and it went almost as expected, as Pakistan were blown away in the opening seven overs to slump to 17 for 3. Opener Abdullah Shafique was caught behind in the first over when he poked at a menacing Starc delivery outside off. It was Starc’s 200th Test wicket at home, as he bowled with far more consistency than in Pakistan’s first innings.Captain Shan Masood was dismissed for just 2 when he was caught behind off Hazlewood after driving loosely. It was a tough captaincy debut for Masood, even as he had made a breezy 30 in Pakistan’s first innings; but his team were unable to play a proactive brand of cricket he had promised ahead of the series.Usman Khawaja and Mitchell Marsh had a rapid partnership•Getty ImagesPakistan’s hopes rested on talisman Babar Azam, who defied Australia’s attack for almost ten overs. He worked hard against Cummins, as the pair renewed their battle after a riveting contest on day two. But Babar was helpless against a cracking Cummins delivery that seamed away, as he was caught behind on 14 after having made 21 in Pakistan’s first innings. The only interest left was whether Pakistan could take the match into a fifth day, and if Lyon would reach his milestone. Pakistan’s hopes nosedived when Sarfaraz Ahmed was caught in the slips off Starc before their plight was underscored with a disastrous run-out of Salman Ali Afgha after a mix-up with Saud Shakeel. It brought back ghosts of the past for Pakistan, who were outclassed throughout the Test. They had entered with optimism and made several bold selection calls, including overlooking veteran quick Hasan Ali and wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan. But debutant seamers Khurram Shahzad and Aamer Jamal impressed by combining for 12 of Pakistan’s 15 wickets in the match. They bowled a hostile length late on day four and early on day five to rough up several Australia batters. They did the bulk of the heavy lifting, with spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi struggling throughout the match, having been elevated as vice-captain. He finished with match figures of 2 for 172 from 45.2 overs, and bowled mostly in the early 130kph range. Pakistan’s attack will rue their lifeless display early in the Test and had no answers for opener David Warner, who dominated the first day with a belligerent century after Cummins won the toss and elected to bat.Allrounder Mitchell Marsh also had a superb first Test on his home ground with two half-centuries and the wicket of Babar in Pakistan’s first innings. Opener Usman Khawaja made a gutsy 90 in Australia’s second innings, having overcome torrid bowling late on day three and early on day four. It was a dogged performance from Khawaja, having come into the match under the spotlight after not being allowed to wear shoes which expressed humanitarian views.Australia’s victory within four days came in the backdrop of a rebranded Perth Test match, with more than 59,000 fans attending – considerably more than last year’s corresponding Test against West Indies which went the distance. The surface was particularly spicier than last year’s game in a throwback to famous WACA Tests. For Pakistan, however, they barely mustered a better effort than their 72 in the previous Test match they had played in Perth back in 2004, as their horror run in Australia stretching more than two decades continued.
