'I said I will go back to my country with a win' – Madziva

Neville Madziva was pumped up after taking 18 runs off the final over to seal a much-needed Zimbabwe victory, and he animatedly expressed how that felt

Mohammad Isam in Mirpur15-Nov-2015You could see the excitement in his big eyes. Neville Madziva was pumped up – and rightly so – after taking 18 runs off the final over to seal a much-needed Zimbabwe victory, against Bangladesh, and he animatedly expressed how that felt.”Whoa! Whoa!” he said, and took a deep breath, when asked whether he could put in words how he felt after his penultimate-ball six clinched a three-wicket win. “Before the game, as a team we wanted to win this game. Right from the hotel to warm-ups, our first innings bowling… everyone was pumped up for a win. I am still chuffed that we won.”With Malcolm Waller, Zimbabwe’s highest scorer of the innings and the best batsmen from the previous game, caught at long-on off the first ball of the final over, you would not have been blamed had you thought things would go differently. But Madziva relished the sight of spinner Nasir Hossain, and what followed next was spectacular: six over cover, two to long-off, four over backward point and then a mighty high hit over long-on. The ball hadn’t dropped beyond the advertising board before Madziva started to jump in celebration.”When I saw Nasir bowling, I told myself to get on strike. I had that self-belief that we will win this game,” Madziva said. “I enjoy facing spinners more. I said to myself, this is it. I will go back to my country with a win.Madziva believed the chase first changed course in the 19th over, when he was caught behind off Mustafizur Rahman but the TV umpire declared a no-ball after watching five replays. “I think that’s where we won this match. I don’t have much to say about it. It happened, we won.”He admitted that had Mustafizur bowled the final over, things might have been different, as he had trouble reading him. “If you see the 19th over, when I was facing Mustafizur, I was struggling to read his slower balls. I had that belief in me against all the other bowlers though.”His captain Elton Chigumbura wasn’t as bubbly, perhaps weighed down by the other losses on the tour to Bangladesh. But he was happy nonetheless, especially at the way they finished off the game. “We were looking for this win when we came here. It is a good feeling to finally win again in Bangladesh. We did well in all departments. The guys worked hard.”Chigumbura said he had asked Madziva to target the slow bowlers. “We thought maybe Nasir will bowl the second-last over. Before he [Madziva] went in, I told him that one spinner will bowl in the last three overs. We had to take as many as we could from that spinner.”Chigumbura had praise for his bowlers too, for keeping Bangladesh to 135 for 9. “The good thing today was that we kept getting wickets. I think the way we bowled in the last three overs, it was a bit easier. We didn’t go for many and this made a big difference as well.”To draw a series is a big positive for Zimbabwe. It was disappointing to lose the ODI series. This win will give us confidence and hopefully we can carry on from here.”

Anderson ruled out of first Test due to calf strain

James Anderson has been ruled out of the Boxing Day Test against South Africa in Durban due to a calf strain

George Dobell24-Dec-2015James Anderson has been ruled out of the Boxing Day Test against South Africa in Durban due to a calf strain.Anderson reported tightness in his right calf muscle on Monday evening and underwent a scan on Tuesday morning. The strain was confirmed on Thursday, following the ECB medical team’s evaluation of the scan.It is not thought to be a serious injury and England remain hopeful that he will be fit for the second Test, which starts in Cape Town on January 2, although there are only two days between the Tests which puts time at a premium.Anderson joined his team-mates on the outfield on Thursday morning but did not join in a jogging session at the start of the session. Instead, he glumly kicked a football around with the bowling coach Ottis Gibson. The rest of the squad, including Steven Finn, were declared fit for the Test match though Joe Root missed training on Thursday due to an upset stomach.”If you talk to Jimmy, he feels he could have played here,” Stuart Broad said. “It’s just a slight niggle, but the management decided it really wasn’t worth the risk in the first Test. There’s a feeling he’ll be okay for Cape Town.’We do know this is a four-Test series and we want him to play a part in it. We’ve got such depth in the squad there’s not the need to take a risk. He’s disappointed but with the strength in depth we’ve got in this group it’s not a hammer blow to us.”It seems the beneficiary of Anderson’s injury is likely to be Chris Woakes. Woakes, who played the last of his four Tests in August 2014, trained with the likely team on Thursday, while Mark Footitt, Chris Jordan and Gary Ballance trained in a separate group for part of the session.Head coach Trevor Bayliss said that much onus now rested with Broad to lead the attack. “From Stuart’s point of view we’ve got an obvious replacement as leader of the attack there and I’m sure he would show that he could handle that as he did
against Australia in the fourth Test,” Bayliss said. “It’s always a concern if your leading bowler or leading batter misses a game, but the last time Jimmy missed one we did pretty well.”James Anderson has his sights set on Cape Town•Getty Images

The last game Anderson missed – and he will now have missed three of England’s last six Tests – was at The Oval where Australia won.But Broad was encouraged by a look at the Durban wicket, which he feels might add seam movement and reverse swing.”I’m useless at judging a cricket wicket,” Broad said. “I wanted to bat at Trent Bridge.”But there is patchiness and that’s interesting as a bowler because when it doesn’t look completely smooth you know there could be some different bounce off the different parts of the wicket. From six years ago, I remember the cracks offered a bit in second innings.”All the talk is about dryness and I remember reverse swing last time. So it’s important we take on the lessons from the UAE because our seamers over there bowled really nicely. If we get any chance to reverse it, then we must throw ourselves into it as a team, because the ball moving sideways means you’re in the game.”Talk from the groundstaff also suggested a hard pitch full of runs, but with some concern that a continuation of the very hot weather could possibly see it break up later. For all the talk about Anderson, the spinners may have a significant say in the outcome of the match.Anderson, even if fit for Cape Town, may be underprepared. He has bowled only five overs in match situations on the tour so far and he would need some flat-out training sessions around the New Year to offset his lack of bowling. It seems Anderson had been aware of a tightness in his calf throughout the tour, but felt the situation deteriorate after attempting to bowl flat out in training on Monday afternoon.Anderson, now aged 33 and a veteran of 110 Tests, was also forced out of the Ashes series at the halfway point due to a side strain. He missed the final two Tests having been forced off the pitch mid-over during the third Test at Edgbaston. While his long-term fitness record remains outstanding – since the start of 2012, only the spinner Rangana Herath has bowled more overs in international cricket – there will be a concern that his heavy workload is starting to catch up with him.Anderson’s status as leader of England’s attack remains unquestioned, however. Although Stuart Broad performed brilliantly in his absence in the Ashes Test at Trent Bridge, Anderson was immaculate during the recent tour of the UAE. In conditions offering him little, he conceded fewer than two runs an over and claimed his 13 wickets – more than any seamer on either side – at just 15.61 apiece.Woakes, the likely replacement, was pencilled in to the side anyway before Finn proved his fitness somewhat ahead of schedule during the tour match at Pietermaritzburg.England’s preparation for the Test series against South Africa had appeared to be progressing remarkably smoothly. They crushed the South Africa A side by an innings in their final warm-up game and, as well as Finn proving his fitness, there have been runs for all the top six and wickets for the spinner, Moeen Ali. Anderson’s absence has taken the gloss off such promising beginnings.Ben Stokes was probably the most impressive batsman in the nets on Thursday. One of the net bowlers was forced to seek medical assistance when struck by an especially fearsome straight drive, while Footitt, bowling at sharp pace, made a late bid for inclusion. Alex Hales, on the brink of his Test debut, looked nervous and was dismissed on a couple of occasions.

The second ODI, in Napier, was abandoned without a ball being bowled, after heavy rain persisted until mid afternoon, and left the ground too sodden for play to begin. The skies had begun to clear well ahead of the game’s cut-off time of 7:19 pm, but with the outfield having received more than 24 hours of persistent rain, umpires Billy Bowden and Bruce Oxenford decided not to risk player safety. The game was called off just before 6:30pm. At that time, portions of the field still appeared waterlogged despite hours of drying with
super soppers. Pakistan can now only draw the series at best, as the action moves to Auckland, for the final match of the tour, on Sunday.

Miller blitzes his way to KXIP captaincy

Kings XI Punjab have named South Africa batsman David Miller captain for IPL 2016. Last year the team was captained by Australia’s George Bailey, but the franchise had not retained Bailey this season.Sanjay Bangar, Kings XI’s coach, said Miller had the right temperament to lead. “I have watched David grow as a player. He has displayed outstanding batting abilities and a cool temperament in many high-pressure situations,” Bangar said. “I am confident in his potential to lead the boys this season.”While he has little captaincy experience on the South African domestic circuit, Miller, 26, is a key batting cog in Kings XI’s line-up. He has been with them since the 2011 season, signed in April 2011 as a replacement player for England allrounder Dimitri Mascarenhas. In 2015, he was the only batsman to score more than 300 runs for them, hitting 357 at 32.45, with a strike rate of 134.21. It was a poor year overall for the team, which finished last in the league stage of the tournament. Ahead of the IPL auction this year, Miller was one of four overseas players retained – the others being Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Johnson.Miller’s appointment comes a few days after Kings XI appointed retired India batsman Virender Sehwag team mentor.Squad: David Miller, Swapnil Singh, M Vijay, Wriddhiman Saha, Rishi Dhawan, Kyle Abbott, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Pardeep Sahu, Anureet Singh, Sandeep Sharma, Farhaan Behardien, Shardul Thakur, Mohit Sharma, Manan Vohra, Gurkeerat Singh, Axar Patel, Nikhil Naik, Mitchell Johnson, Shaun Marsh, KC Cariappa, Armaan Jaffer

Dominant SA cruise to nine-wicket win

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsAn England implosion that saw their last seven wickets go down for just 14 runs and a sublime performance with the bat, combining the power of AB de Villiers with the elegance of Hashim Amla, saw South Africa seal the two-match T20 series in emphatic fashion. Victory meant South Africa won both limited-overs series against England, after losing the Test series, and ended the tour in fine style. On a Wanderers pitch packed with runs, England needed a total in excess of 200 but could not get away at the start of the innings, rebuilt with a 96-run stand between Eoin Morgan and Jos Buttler and then collapsed. De Villiers and Amla then made England wonder if 300 would have been enough when they polished off 100 runs inside seven overs to set South Africa up for a dominant win.Unlike in the previous matches on this tour, South Africa did not allow England to get away from them early on. Kagiso Rabada and Kyle Abbott kept a lid on things by bowling back of a length. Rabada could have had Jason Roy out first ball but JP Duminy spilled the catch at short cover. Ten balls later, Rabada had his man when Roy tried to smack him down the ground, was beaten for pace and his off stump was uprooted.South Africa continued with their short-ball strategy but it did not work as well against Joe Root. He scored the first boundary of the innings off one of those deliveries and went on to punish Abbott, Rabada, Chris Morris and then David Wiese, who was dealt with even more severely once Root was dismissed. The introduction of spin allowed South Africa to pull things back when Imran Tahir had Root caught on the extra cover boundary and he was on hand to run out Alex Hales when Eoin Morgan seemed to commit a second as Morris raced in from deep midwicket. By the time he sent Hales back it was too late.AB de Villiers went off like a train in the chase•Getty Images

With two new batsmen at the crease, England needed time to rebuild and once Buttler had settled, he took it on himself to accelerate. He found runs with power and placement, particularly off Wiese, who missed the yorker and tried the slower ball without success.
Morgan joined the party and Wiese’s second and third overs cost 30 runs.He was replaced by Duminy, who fared no better. Buttler targeted Duminy, Morgan looked more confident than he has throughout the series and was reading Morris well. With four overs to go, England, on 150, were well on track for a big score. Then, their fortunes changed. Buttler was caught inches off the turf by Faf du Plessis and Morgan was run out at the non-striker’s end in successive balls. England had two new men in again and their luck got no better. Stokes was caught off a ball that he should have hit into the ground but which popped up to Morris, Duminy made up for his earlier blunder with a good catch on the boundary to remove Moeen Ali and England were in free fall.Abbott was rewarded for accuracy with two wickets in two balls at the death and England were bowled out without completing their 20 overs. Rabada took the final wicket in similar fashion to the way he claimed the first when he removed Adil Rashid’s off stump. At altitude and with a fast outfield, South Africa would have known the target was chaseable but may not have expected to get it as quickly as they did. De Villiers was in no mood to stick around. The first ball he faced found the boundary and that was just the beginning. He sent the ball into the stands, the grass embankment and even the parking lot in a display of innovative hitting that the Wanderers has seen before. The ground was the venue of de Villiers’ fastest ODI century and has now also witnessed his fastest fifty in the shortest format. It came off 21-balls.By then Amla, who only had eight runs when de Villiers had 40, had just about caught up. In entirely contrasting style, Amla added 32 runs off nine balls with touches of finesse, like his flick through fine leg, and excellent timing.South Africa’s hundred was up in the seventh over and none of the England bowlers was spared. The attack were all guilty of missing their lines, often bowling too full and on the pads and were overawed by the assault they came under. De Villiers found the boundary six times and went over it another six but finally miscued Rashid to long-off to give England some relief but not much hope.Amla got to fifty soon after, off 27 balls and batted through. He had his highest T20 international score by the time du Plessis finished off to give South Africa victory with 5.2 overs to spare.

Cullinan: Gambhir looks hungry for runs

Big Picture

It’s a top-of-the-table clash at Eden Gardens. Kolkata Knight Riders are at No. 1 with six wins in nine matches. Gujarat Lions have an equal number of wins, but have played an extra game and are smarting from three successive defeats.Lions’ struggles are best exemplified by their last three Powerplay scores – 26 for 3, 35 for 3 and 36 for 2. Dwayne Smith and Brendon McCullum’s failures have added more pressure on a middle order that has yet to fire. And if they were thinking of slotting Aaron Finch back at the top, there is doubt over his fitness again. Finch struck his fourth fifty in six matches in Hyderabad, but did not take the field for the chase. While Lions have a few key batsmen out of form – Suresh Raina has only one fifty in 10 innings and Dwayne Bravo has barely been striking at a run a ball – Knight Riders’ depth has served them well.Gautam Gambhir, who has opened up his stance, and Robin Uthappa have strung five fifty-plus partnerships this season. When they tripped up, against Royal Challengers Bangalore for example, Andre Russell and Yusuf Pathan bashed 96 off 44 balls to secure an unlikely victory.Russell topped that with a breathtaking spell against Kings XI Punjab and with Morne Morkel’s pace and bounce from the other end, Knight Riders have the Powerplay covered.Piyush Chawla has been tidy in the middle overs, with eight wickets in eight games at 23.75. The only worry for the hosts is Sunil Narine’s form and fitness. So far, Narine has been predictable; the ball isn’t spinning both ways anymore. He’s also nursing a finger injury.

In the spotlight

Bravo and Chawla are currently tied with 117 IPL wickets. Returning from injury on Friday, Bravo impressed with his slower balls again, but managed only 18 off 20 balls with the bat. Lions will want more from Bravo with the bat.Chawla, meanwhile, has mixed his legbreaks and googlies well, and will relish bowling at Eden Gardens. He has 13 wickets in 11 matches for Knight Riders at this venue.

Team news

If Sunil Narine needs more time to regain fitness, Knight Riders are likely to persist with left-arm wrist spinner Brad Hogg.Kolkata Knight Riders (probable): 1 Gautam Gambhir(capt), 2 Robin Uthappa(wk), 3 Manish Pandey, 4 Suryakumar Yadav, 5 Shakib Al Hasan, 6 Yusuf Pathan, 7 Andre Russell, 8 Piyush Chawla, 9 Brad Hogg/Sunil Narine, 10 Morne Morkel, Umesh YadavLions may consider including James Faulkner if Finch has aggravated a hamstring injury he suffered last month. Left-arm seamer Pradeep Sangwan, who leaked 28 runs in two overs on Friday, is likely to make way for batsman Ishan Kishan or left-arm spinner Shadab Jakati.Gujarat Lions (probable): 1 Dwayne Smith, 2 Brendon McCullum, 3 Suresh Raina(capt), 4 Dinesh Karthik(wk), 5 Aaron Finch/James Faulkner, 6 Ravindra Jadeja, 7 Dwayne Bravo, 8 Pradeep Sangwan/Ishan Kishan/Shadab Jakati, 9 Praveen Kumar 10 Dhawal Kulkarni, 11 Shivil Kaushik

Pitch and conditions

The Eden Gardens surface has traditionally been slow and favours spin. Sunday is expected to be a warm day, with chances of showers in the afternoon.

Stats and trivia

  • Russell has picked up six Man-of-the-Match awards for Knight Riders since IPL 2015.

Ingram maintains Glamorgan's upward curve

Colin Ingram blasted 64 off 30 balls as Glamorgan continued their impressive start to the NatWest T20 Blast with a six-wicket win over Gloucestershire at Bristol. The experienced South African hammered five sixes and four fours as his side comfortably chased down a target of 169 with seven balls to spare. After rain delayed the start until 7pm, Gloucestershire posted 168 for 8, Ian Cockbain and Kieran Noema-Barnett both scoring 37.Dale Steyn was the pick of the Glamorgan bowlers with 2 for 21 from his four overs, while Graham Wagg claimed 2 for 28.It didn’t look enough on a good pitch with a fast outfield. Ingram was well supported by Anuerin Donald as Glamorgan made it three wins from four group games.Gloucestershire’s innings got off to a poor start as they lost their two best T20 batsmen Michael Klinger and Hamish Marshall in less than three overs.Klinger had made only five when loosely driving a catch to extra cover off Timm van der Gugten and it was 11 for 2 when Marshall, on 3, played an equally poor shot to be be caught at mid-off, Steyn the successful bowler. It was 30 for 3 when Chris Dent lofted Wagg to long-on where van der Gugten took a good catch in the final Powerplay over.Cockbain launched a counter-attack, hitting two sixes off Meschede before the bowler took revenge by having him caught behind. By that time Benny Howell had gone too and at 79 for 5, the hosts were in a hole.Noema-Barnett played a powerful cameo, hitting sixes off Dean Cosker and van der Gugten in making his runs off 22 balls and Jack Taylor steered Gloucestershire towards a respectable total, helped by an enormous scooped six by Gareth Roderick off Steyn.Andrew Tye’s two sixes in the final over gave the home side hope, but proved in vain.Jacques Rudolph and David Lloyd gave the visitors a solid start with a stand of 29 before Tye struck with the last ball of his first over, the fifth of the innings, Lloyd getting a thick edge off a quicker ball to Liam Norwell at third man.Ingram picked up two sixes over deep backward square in the same Norwell over as Glamorgan moved to 45 for one at the end of the powerplay. The next over from Howell saw Rudolph bowled for 16. But Ingram pulled a Noema-Barnett full-toss for his third six and at the halfway stage in their innings Glamorgan were well placed at 86 for 2.Tye, who had bowled his first two overs for ten runs, was ordered out of the Gloucestershire attack after being no-balled twice for high full-tosses in the 15th over.It was a blow the hosts could not afford. Ingram had reached a 24-ball half-century and by the time he fell to Chris Dent, who had replaced Tye, after hitting the left-arm spinner’s first two balls for six, only 29 were needed from 32 balls.Chris Cooke fell for 16, but Donald was still there at the end, having hit four fours and a six in his 39-ball innings.

Morgan admits 'big concern' over Bangladesh

Eoin Morgan, England’s limited-overs captain, has admitted there are “big concerns” over the security of the team’s tour of Bangladesh later this year following last week’s terrorist attack in Dhaka

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Jul-2016Eoin Morgan, England’s limited-overs captain, has admitted there are “big concerns” over the security of the team’s tour to Bangladesh later this year following last week’s terrorist attack in Dhaka. The ECB has said they will follow government advice – and guidance from their highly regarded head of security Reg Dickason – to decide whether the tour will take place as planned. England are due to fly out on September 30.”I think it is quite a big concern at the moment,” Morgan said. “We’ve always left the big decisions to the ECB. They write reports, send guys out to see if it’s safe then come back to the players to see if they’re happy or unhappy. But certainly it’s a concern at the moment.”When asked about the potential of moving the tour to a neutral location, Morgan said: “I think that could be feasible if it came to that.”On Sunday, the BCB president Nazmul Hassan said he understood the reaction to the attack but hoped that the tour would still go ahead.”I have seen England’s reaction, which is quite normal. We would have done the same thing if we were in their position … England are coming after three months, by which time the situation in Bangladesh will get better. It is hard to say which place is safe now. Safety can be an issue in England after three months. We will strengthen our security. If we can ensure that, cricket should not be a problem.”Seven gunmen, armed with bombs and guns, had opened fire in a bakery before taking occupants hostage in Gulshan area in Dhaka on July 1. Twenty civilians were killed. Last year, Australia had postponed their tour of Bangladesh based on their government’s security advice. Earlier this year, Australia had pulled out of the Under-19 World Cup hosted by Bangladesh for the same reasons.

Dwayne Smith, Jason Mohammed script dramatic Guyana win

Jason Mohammed steered Guyana Amazon Warriors to a thrilling four-wicket win over St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in Basseterre after Dwayne Smith laid the platform for the chase of 165 with a scorching 62 off 36.Smith’s pyrotechnics in the first 10 overs included three fours and five sixes, and helped the visitors race to 91 by the halfway stage of their innings. However, his dismissal off the first legitimate ball of the 11th over enabled Patriots to claw their way back with regular strikes. Chris Lynn was run out two balls after Smith’s departure, while Chris Barnwell and Anthony Bramble nicked behind. With Amazon Warriors still requiring 30 off the last three overs, Mohammed took charge. He did so with aplomb, finding timely boundaries as the Patriots pacers missed their lengths in the slog overs. With two needed off two, Mohammed mistimed a slog towards midwicket, but Faf du Plessis, sprinting in from the deep, could not hold on to the catch and the batsmen scampered through for two to seal victory with a ball to spare. Mohammed finished with an unbeaten 42 off 29 balls.Earlier, Sohail Tanvir was Amazon Warriors’ hero with the ball. The left-arm seamer began with a maiden, which included the wicket of Lendl Simmons for a five-ball duck. Tanvir was then re-introduced in the closing overs and conceded only 12 runs in his last two overs, while taking three wickets, including those of set batsmen Devon Thomas and Thisara Perera. Tanvir finished with figures of 4 for 20 while Australia legspinner Adam Zampa took 3 for 34 on CPL debut. While middle-order cameos from Thomas, Perera and Brad Hodge helped Patriots to to 164 for 9, that total proved to be not quite enough in the end.
