West ham: Moyes must unleash Soucek

West Ham United arguably face one of the most important games in the club’s history on Thursday evening, as David Moyes’ side take on Bundesliga outfit Eintracht Frankfurt in a pivotal, Europa League semi-final showdown.

The Hammers head into that second leg in Germany trailing their opponents on aggregate, having succumbed to a 2-1 defeat on home soil last week, ensuring they have plenty to do to reach the dangling carrot that is the showpiece.

The east Londoners return to action having suffered another 2-1 loss at the hands of Mikel Arteta’s, top-four chasing Arsenal side on Sunday, albeit with that clash having seen Moyes shuffle his pack in preparation for this upcoming crunch meeting.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-this-weeks-latest-west-ham-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-more” title= “Read the latest West Ham news!”]

One man who was dropped to the bench at the London Stadium at the weekend was Tomas Soucek, although following that well-earned rest, the Czech international should surely be thrust back into the action by his manager.

Although club captain Mark Noble far from discredited himself in midfield on what was a rare league start – the 34-year-old recording an impressive 7.1 match rating according to SofaScore – the Englishman seemingly lacks the unique attributes that make his towering teammate such a force of nature in the centre of the park.

Dubbed “like the terminator” by pundit Jamie Redknapp for his brutal and committed approach, the 6 foot 4 giant is a commanding presence alongside talisman Declan Rice, with the duo having formed a simply telepathic relationship since the 27-year-old’s arrival back in January 2020.

Initially plucked on a loan deal – before being snapped permanently for £15m – the £47k-per-week brute has been a vital part of the club’s rise in recent seasons, proving his worth in both boxes with his aerial presence and never-say-die attitude.

Having bagged ten Premier League goals in his first full campaign in English football last term, the £40.5m-rated gem has added a further five top-flight goals this season, while also boasting an outstanding defensive record to boot.

The former Slavia Prague man ranks fifth in the league for aerial duels won (125), while he’s also averaged 1.5 interceptions, 1.9 tackles and 2.7 clearances per game, showcasing his willingness to do the dirty work in front of the back four.

No slouch at the other end of the pitch, however, he also ranks in the top 9% among players in his position in Europe’s top five leagues for touches in the attacking penalty area, proving himself a real weapon in the final third.

In a game of such great importance, Moyes needs a man who is not afraid to put his body on the line for the cause, but can also offer a real threat in attack when needed, particularly at set-pieces.

The former Everton boss simply must throw Soucek back into the fray; he could well terrify Frankfurt.

Wolves: Wanderers handed setback after Neves’ dream is revealed

A new transfer update has emerged surrounding the future of Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves, according to a Spanish source.

The Lowdown: Plenty of interest

The 25-year-old first joined the Premier League outfit from FC Porto in 2017, and has since gone on to make a total of 208 appearances for Bruno Lage’s side.

Neves’ contract with the Wanderers isn’t set to expire until 2024, but he has been linked with a move away from Molineux for most of this season, with the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal, and Barcelona said to be the three main suitors interested in his services.

Making the switch to either the Gunners or the Red Devils would obviously mean staying in the top-flight, but the thought of a move to the Spanish giants is huge for any player, and following a new report, it seems as though we might just know where the 26-time international’s next destination is going to be.

The Latest: Neves’ dream

According to major Spanish outlet Sport (via TEAMtalk), it’s claimed that Neves would ‘rather opt’ for a move to the Blaugrana, with it being his lifelong ‘dream’ to wear the Barcelona shirt.

It was thought that a move to the Catalans would be the least likely option due to their current financial situation, but given the fact that the maestro is ‘keen’ on a transfer, it’s reported that Barca may want to do ‘all in their power’ to secure his signature in the summer.

The Verdict: Bags of potential

Making 32 outings in all competitions under Lage so far this season, the £36m-rated talisman has managed to score four goals and register two assists in what has been a difficult campaign for the Wanderers, as per Transfermarkt.

Neves has been dubbed an “outstanding” player by Wolves journalist Tim Spiers, and still has plenty to give wherever his next club might be, should he depart.

If the midfielder were to join Xavi’s outfit in the upcoming window, it would at least save the Molineux faithful from having to see him in a rival shirt twice a season, and presumably bank the club a huge fee to reinvest into the squad.

In other news… a journalist has backed Wolves to strengthen one key area this summer.

Wolves receive major transfer boost

A major Wolves transfer development has emerged that will please everyone associated with the club as they aim to look ahead to next season.

What’s the news?

Sky Sports reporter Johnny Phillips has stated that there will be some “significant” transfer business done this summer at the Premier League club in order to begin a rebuild which could see Wolves reach the European spots as it looks like they will just miss out this term.

All in all, it’s been a solid season for the club, a top-half finish, but the previous few weeks haven’t been great, and some additions look necessary.

“This will be a summer of change with significant transfer activity, perhaps more so than in any other window during this Premier League period,” said Phillips.

“The spine of the team will change, with more than one central defender on his way in and a strengthening of the midfield and forward positions also set to happen.”

Great news for Lage

This should leave manager Bruno Lage ecstatic and it’s news that will surely please the supporters too. Although they sailed through the vast majority of the campaign in excellent touch, their form in the Premier League has been poor of late, with the 2-2 draw against Chelsea their first point since the start of April.

Under former manager Nuno Espirito Santo, the club proved that they could finish in seventh place and the onus is for Lage to repeat this achievement.

With Wolves being linked with players in the quality of Ryan Kent and Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill, then there is absolutely no reason why the side can’t kick on and secure European football next season for the first time since Nuno left the club.

However, they will have to make do with the potential departures of Ruben Neves and Max Kilman, who have both been linked with moves away too. Should that happen, there is simply no excuse not to spend the cash they receive on replacements.

Even with players like that at their disposal, they are already punching above their weight, but there is a growing feeling amongst the fans that they aren’t being ambitious enough. Big investment this summer, however, could change that.

Aston Villa: Danny Mills reacts to Ollie Watkins exit rumour

Pundit Danny Mills has been reacting to rumours of Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins potentially moving to West Ham, Football Insider report.

Watkins has been a regular this season, missing just one game since Steven Gerrard took over back in November. The 26-year-old has been in fine in front of goal over recent months, which has resulted in links of a move to the London Stadium.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/aston-villa-latest-news/” title=”Aston Villa latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

David Moyes’ side are exploring the possibility of signing the England international, with Villa likely to demand £50m for his services after suggestions Gerrard would be willing to cash in this summer.

The Latest: Mills’ comments

Mills, who contributes for Sky Sports, was talking to FI regarding Watkins amid rumours of a move to West Ham.

He said he’d be ‘surprised’ if Watkins left Villa Park this summer, as he would need to be replaced, questioning if a £50m price tag was fair.

“It’s an interesting one, isn’t it? Because he has done pretty well.

“But you do think there is perhaps something just missing. Something that isn’t quite there in some of his performances.

“Is £50million a lot? Maybe West Ham would be the club for him. He’s good but he’s not outstanding week in and week out.

“I’m sure Villa want to keep him. He hasn’t been disastrous in any shape or form and if he goes he has to be replaced.

“So I would be surprised if he went this summer. You have to remember he came from the Championship and he was down there for a reason.

“You have to find your level and work to get that Premier League quality. Maybe over the next couple of seasons, he will get there.”

The Verdict: Fair price

Watkins is Villa’s most valuable asset, as per Transfermarkt and appears to be at the top of his game with a career-high £31.5m valuation. Therefore, a £50m fee should be the least Villa receive should they decide to part ways with the forward this summer, given that his contract still runs until 2025.

This is a young England international under contract for a further three years and has once again hit double figures for goals in a sixth successive league campaign, so a big-money exit could be one to keep a close eye on, with Jonathan David and Luis Suarez linked to possibly come in.

Allen and Latham secure consolation New Zealand victory

Bangladesh had left out several first-choice picks and looked a bit rusty as they lost by 27 runs

Mohammad Isam10-Sep-2021New Zealand saved their best batting display for the last game as they revelled in the leniency showed by Shere Bangla National Stadium curator Gamini Silva. On a pitch much more conducive for strokeplay, they piled up 161 for 5 and beat Bangladesh by 27 runs. Tom Latham struck his second fifty of the series and Finn Allen played a telling innings as well. His 41 off 24 balls gave the visitors the perfect start after they decided to bat first for the fourth time in the series.Bangladesh were, predictably, off colour, having chosen only three specialist bowlers in the XI, leaving nine overs in the care of part-timers. Shoriful Islam, playing for the first time in the series, took two wickets but looked rusty.Chasing 162, Bangladesh made a poor start, leaving too much for the middle-order to do in the last ten overs. Afif Hossain blazed briefly to make an unbeaten 49, but ran out of partners.Ajaz Patel, once again, led the way with 2 for 21 from his four overs, but it was how New Zealand batted that made most of the difference.Allen lives by the sword, dies by the sword
Allen promised that he will bat in his own way. He failed to launch in the previous two matches, but lived up to his billing in this game. He began by pulling a Nasum Ahmed half-tracker for six, before taking Shoriful apart with two fours and a six in the fourth over.Allen repeated the dose, hitting Shoriful for another four and six, this time waiting on the slower-ball to hammer it over deep square leg. But Shoriful struck back in the same over, first removing Rachin Ravindra for 17, before clean bowling Allen as well. Against what was the last ball of the powerplay, Allen missed a hoick going across his stumps, staying true to his style.Latham provides final flourish
Taking two more wickets, Bangladesh left New Zealand (83 for 4 in the 11th over) with the same problem of the previous four matches. But Latham kept them on track, with a nice blend of ones and twos and boundaries. He added 35 runs for the fifth wicket with Henry Nicholls, who was brilliantly caught behind by Nurul Hasan.Latham then went for the jugular, adding 43 in the last 3.3 overs with Colin McConchie. In the process, the New Zealand stand-in captain raised his second fifty of the series, which has been played on some very tricky pitches. He struck two fours and two sixes, both off Taskin Ahmed in the 19th over and both hammered over midwicket.Bangladesh sink fastThe home side couldn’t adjust to a better pitch, getting bogged down during the powerplay, unable to reach even a six an over. Liton Das finished the series poorly, falling for 10 thanks to Scott Kuggeleijn taking a brilliant one-handed catch at backward point.Soumya Sarkar was also caught at point, cutting at a ball without any balance. Next over, Ben Sears took his maiden T20I wicket, getting Mohammad Naim caught behind for 23. Mushfiqur Rahim became the third batter to fall in as many overs when he holed out to Colin de Grandhomme, off Ravindra. On 48 for 4 at the half-way mark, Bangladesh were sinking fast.NZ douse a brief spark
Mahmudullah and Afif revived Bangladesh’s innings with a 63-run fifth wicket stand. There were some breathtaking shots, particularly Afif’s flicked four and six off Sears, which led to two big overs, the 14th and 15th, that yielded 24 for the home side. But when Mahmudullah holed out at sweeper cover for 23, the sting was gone. Nurul and Shamim Hossain made 4 and 2 respectively, before the tail caved in. Afif struck two fours and three sixes in his 33-ball stay.Every New Zealand bowler took a wicket, with Patel and Kuggeleijn taking two each. It was a fine effort, one that they can take to Pakistan for the ODIs and T20Is as encouragement.

Pollard: West Indies to take a knee at T20 World Cup

“It’s something we’re going to continue because it’s something that we strongly believe in”

Matt Roller12-Oct-2021West Indies will continue to take a knee before their matches at the men’s T20 World Cup in the UAE in a stand against racism, their captain Kieron Pollard has said.West Indies’ players and support staff have kneeled and raised fists before the start of games since the murder of George Floyd in May 2020, showing their support of the Black Lives Matter movement. Speaking from the team’s training camp in Dubai on Tuesday, Pollard said that they would continue to do so during the tournament.”From my knowledge at this present time, I think it’s something we’re going to continue because it’s something that we strongly believe in, as a team,” Pollard said. “Hopefully we can just continue to show our support for something that I think is close to our hearts.”England, West Indies’ opponents in their opening fixture in Dubai on October 23, took a knee during series against West Indies and Ireland last year but were criticised by Michael Holding, the former fast bowler and broadcaster, for when they stopped doing so later in their home summer. Before Australia’s men took a knee for the first time during their white-ball tour to the Caribbean earlier this year, Pollard said he did not want opposition teams to kneel “because the West Indies are doing it” and that it was “not a matter of us just doing it and you supporting us and we’re looking for that sympathy”.”Everyone has their own opinions on racism and Black Lives Matter and all these things,” Pollard said, asked if he would encourage England to take a knee alongside West Indies. “So, I can’t tell them what to do or expect anything, because sometimes when you expect things from people, you tend to get disappointed.”Again, sometimes, you just have to look at the man in the mirror, and if we think it is something that is very, very important to us, we will do it. And if the opposition thinks that as well, it’s up to them. If they don’t, [it’s a matter of] personal choices.”The ICC has previously intervened and fined players when they have made gestures “for messages which relate to political, religious or racial activities or causes” or displayed “personal messages on their clothing, equipment or otherwise,” but last year pledged to use “common sense” when players took a knee.Chris Jordan, the fast bowler, said earlier on Tuesday that the England squad had not yet spoken about the possibility of taking at knee during their training camp in Oman.”Nothing has been discussed, really” Jordan said. “We’ll discuss it and if people feel strongly about it, we’ll definitely do it. On the flip side, if we don’t, then we won’t. We’ll have to discuss that internally and then take it from there.”

Dom Sibley withdraws from Lions tour, Harry Brook steps up

Opener pulls out to work on technique after losing Test place

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Oct-2021Dom Sibley has chosen to withdraw from this winter’s Lions tour to Australia, in the wake of his omission from the main Ashes tour party, with Yorkshire’s rising star Harry Brook taking his place in the 14-man squad.Sibley finished the season as a double trophy winner, following Warwickshire’s triumphs in the County Championship and the Bob Willis Trophy, but was a notable omission for the Ashes squad, which is due to depart for Australia on November 4, ahead of the opening Test at Brisbane on December 8.England preferred instead to retain Haseeb Hameed as Rory Burns’ nominal partner, following his recall during the India series, with Zak Crawley also returning as a top-order candidate despite a solitary half-century in 14 innings since his 267 against Pakistan last year. With Rob Yates, Sibley’s Warwickshire opening partner, also included in the Lions party, Sibley has chosen to sit this winter out and instead concentrate on his technique, after a notable struggle for fluency during the English Test season. He made 356 runs at 19.77 in ten Tests in 2021, and despite a trio of gutsy half-centuries, including one apiece in Sri Lanka and India, and a match-saving 60 not out against New Zealand in the first Test at Lord’s, his struggles to rotate the strike became a mounting concern for the management as he was dropped after England’s defeat against India, also at Lord’s.Harry Brook gets low to scoop during the Hundred•Getty Images

In a statement, the ECB said that Sibley’s withdrawal had come “after much thought and consideration”. “Sibley has decided to spend the winter working on his batting at home in a bid to regain England selection,” the statement added.Brook’s elevation caps an impressive year for one of England’s most promising young batters. He was named as the winner of two prestigious Young Player awards, from the PCA and the Cricket Writers’ Club respectively, after starring across formats for Yorkshire, as well as for Northern Superchargers in the inaugural season of the Hundred.Brook, 22, made more runs across the T20 Blast and the Hundred than any other English player, averaging 61.36 and striking at 150.33 from the middle order; he came into the season with a first-class average a shade under 25 but finished it as Yorkshire’s second-highest run-scorer in the County Championship.”I wrote a few things down at the start of the season – a few aims for the year, what runs I wanted to get in different formats,” Brook told ESPNcricinfo last month. “I got all them targets so I was very happy with it. I do it every season really, but I think this is the first year I’ve actually hit them goals. It’s just trying to know what a good season is before actually starting it. I think it’s nice to set goals and if you smash them, it’s a really good feeling.”The Lions party will depart for Australia alongside the Test specialists on November 4, and the two parties will be in camp together in the lead-up to the Ashes.A chance for the Lions players to impress will come in two intra-squad matches (1 x 3-day and 1 x 4-day matches) in Queensland. They will also take on Australia A in a four-day match, although the dates and venues are still to be confirmed. The party will return home on December 16.

Paine back keeping and hopes to play Shield and Marsh Cup games ahead of the Ashes

Test captain aiming to play up to four matches ahead of the Ashes despite pulling up “a little bit stiff” in his first session since neck surgery

Alex Malcolm05-Nov-2021Australia Test captain Tim Paine is hopeful he could play a Sheffield Shield and Marsh Cup game for Tasmania ahead of the first Ashes Test after he returned to wicketkeeping for the first time since neck surgery in September.Paine has been slowly recovering since having invasive surgery to repair a bulging disk in his neck.He revealed on his weekly radio spot with that he was able to keep at training on Thursday and was due to have another session on Friday but has opted to rest after pulling up stiff.”I had a decent catch yesterday, [which was] pretty good,” Paine said. “I had a bit of a dive around yesterday, so I’m a little bit stiff today.”I was going to have a catch with the great Tim Coyle, the former Tasmanian coach…but I had to pull the pin on that just to give myself a bit of time to rest up, I don’t want to be doing too much back-to-back days.”It’s nothing to worry about, just a bit of stiffness having had a few months off. I’ve pulled up a bit sore. But yesterday was as I would train normally, so it’s a really good sign that I got through that and I’m looking forward to playing a game of cricket in the coming weeks.”Related

ICC to formally support Afghan women cricketers

A dedicated fund and robust high-performance programme will be set up to help Afghan women cricketers

Mel Jones: This group of Afghanistan women are trying to rebuild their lives

The ICC has said it will form a “dedicated task force” to support Afghanistan women cricketers who have been displaced by the Taliban regime ruling the country. The initiative, which is in partnership with the BCCI, ECB and CA, will include “a dedicated fund to provide direct monetary assistance, ensuring these cricketers have the resources they need to continue pursuing the game they love,” the ICC said in a statement on Sunday. “This will be complemented by a robust high-performance programme offering advanced coaching, world-class facilities, and tailored mentorship to help them reach their full potential.”Related

Jay Shah, the ICC chairman, said: “At the International Cricket Council, we are deeply committed to fostering inclusivity and ensuring every cricketer has the opportunity to shine, regardless of their circumstances. In collaboration with our valued partners, we are proud to launch this task force and support fund, complemented by a comprehensive high-performance programme, to ensure displaced Afghan women cricketers can continue their journey in the sport. This initiative reflects our steadfast dedication to cricket’s global growth and its power to inspire unity, resilience, and hope.”Since the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in 2021, women have been forced to adhere to an increasingly restrictive range of laws barring them from most areas of public life, including sports. Shortly before that, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) had agreed to contract 25 women players, most of whom now live in exile in Australia. The exiled Afghanistan women’s team played their first game in Melbourne earlier this year•AFP/Getty Images

In July last year, former members of the Afghanistan women’s national team, no longer recognised as such by the country’s Taliban rulers, wrote to the ICC asking to be recognised as a refugee team. In January this year, an Afghanistan women’s XI played a T20 game against a Cricket Without Borders team in Melbourne.”I am delighted the ICC will provide strong support for Afghanistan women’s players including those now resident in Australia,” CA chief executive Todd Greenberg said. “We hope this will help enable the Afghanistan women to achieve their goal of improving their cricket and playing at the highest possible level.”We remain extremely grateful to all those in the Australian Cricket who have played a role in the resettlement of the Afghanistan women in Australia and in providing playing opportunities.”Richard Gould, the ECB chief executive, said: “We have been vocal in recent times around the need for meaningful funding to support female players from Afghanistan so that they can thrive despite not being able to play at home.”Having previously contributed a significant sum to the Global Refugee Cricket Fund, we are encouraged that this positive step from the ICC will go even further. We want the Afghanistan women’s team to continue being a beacon of hope for all women and girls.”While there has been pressure on the ICC to act against Afghanistan from the governments of some Full Member countries, it has not taken any action against the men’s team. In March, Human Rights Watch, which describes itself as an independent, international, non-governmental organisation, called on the ICC to suspend Afghanistan’s membership and ban the Taliban-run nation from competing in international cricket. The request came via an email addressed to Shah, dated February 3 and made public on March 7.

Blair Tickner, Luis Reece turn the tables as Derbyshire fight back

Chance of an interesting fourth-innings chase as Glamorgan lose grip on match

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay04-May-2025Derbyshire fought back with bat and ball to set up tantalising fourth day despite Glamorgan’s favourable position at Sophia Gardens.New Zealand seamer Blair Tickner spearheaded a Derbyshire attack that reduced hosts Glamorgan to 15 for 3 after scoring 28 in an invaluable 62-run partnership with Luis Reece who finished 73 not out to reach 350.Reece and Alex Thomson added 105 for the eighth wicket to avoid follow-on fears to take control of the match heading into the third innings before Colin Ingram and Zain Ul Hassan’s resistance in a century partnership of their own, extending the Welsh County’s lead to 213 heading into the final day.Derbyshire began day three on the back foot of any result possibility in positive favour; eight hours later, the match hung in the balance. At 215 for 7 they carried their momentum over from the previous evening with injury-hampered Reece and Thomson until a new ball in the hands of Timm van der Gugten was too much for the number nine Thomson. When Andy Gorvin dismissed Zak Chappell to claim his second first-class five-wicket haul Glamorgan were ready to be head into lunch with the afternoon and evening to bat. What would follow was frustration, a delayed lunch and negative tactics against a wildly energetic, bat-flinging Tickner who tried to crunch everything to the fence regardless of the bowler.Reece continued his dominant form against Glamorgan, against whom he boasts an average in excess of 90. In the process, the left-hander passed 5000 first-class runs for Derbyshire with a six, notching himself among great Derbyshire all-rounders.From nowhere Derbyshire gained three batting points and reduced the deficit to just 81 runs after coming back out to bat after lunch.Derbyshire’s rampage didn’t end with the bat. Reece being unable to field didn’t inhibit the visitors as Anuj Dal provided control from one end while Tickner ran riot, dismissing Tribe after a change of ends, with just one over bowled in his initial spell. He then added Carlson, also in single figures, edging to second slip from around-the-wicket, with three wickets falling in as many overs.Weathering the storm until tea, Glamorgan survived until the 11th over when everything became seamlessly easier, as it so often does at Sophia Gardens. A five-over period featuring just six runs became much more free-flowing when Ul Hassan and Ingram went a further 35 overs unscathed.Positives for Derbyshire must be seen from creating an opportunity for themselves in this game if Glamorgan offer a generous or tempting chase. Thomson also enjoyed plenty of spin, demonstrated when bowling a sweeping Ingram after hitting the off-spinner for a six in the over.Ingram continued to showcase why he topped the County Championship run-scoring charts last season with another half-century. Ul-Hassan fell short of his third half-century of the season when a rearing-up delivery from Chappell removed the opener to bring two fresh batters to the crease.Nightwatcher Gorvin and 21-year-old Ben Kellaway were forced to survive a final six overs in the day after a comfortable position fell to an ominous one once more.Glamorgan will have Kellaway as their frontline spinner for day four, with Mason Crane still unfit and Shoaib Bashir’s loan ending, which could yet be significant for Derbyshire’s position in the match.
