Crystal Palace fans react after Martin Kelly signs a new contract

[ad_pod ]

Crystal Palace fans have taken to Twitter to react after it was revealed that Martin Kelly had signed a new contract with the club.

The England international’s new deal will keep him at Selhurst Park until June 2021, and is a big move for Palace as they tie down their third-choice centre-back for the foreseeable future.

Kelly has been with the club since 2014 after arriving from Liverpool, and has made 110 appearances for the south London-based club.

At 28 years of age, Kelly could be forgiven for wanting to leave as he finds game time hard to come by as a result of James Tomkins and Mamadou Sakho’s formidable partnership, but he has always displayed model professionalism when called upon by Roy Hodgson.

Kelly has made 10 appearances for the Eagles this season, emerging as somewhat of a fans’ favourite thanks to his excellent attitude and committed performances.

Let’s take a look at how the Palace supporters reacted to the news on Twitter…

Pellegrini should back Fredericks above Zabaleta

Manuel Pellegrini’s decision to substitute Pablo Zabaleta for Ryan Fredericks at half-time on Friday evening could finally be the sign that the manager has more faith in Fredericks than the 34-year-old.

Zabaleta was poor in closing down Fulham starlet Ryan Sessegnon last time out at the London Stadium and the right-back was largely at fault for the Whites opening the scoring as early as the third minute.

The Hammers recovered well to win the match 3-1 in the end but Sessegnon was quite easily able to put a low pass behind Zabaleta, which Ryan Babel calmly pounced on and put away to give Fulham an early lead.

Fredericks, who started West Ham’s previous two league games against Liverpool and Crystal Palace looked much more composed and organised at the back in the second-half, making it difficult for the likes of Sessegnon to find space on the wing.

The 26-year-old showed in the matches against the Reds and the Eagles that he is well and truly capable of handling the pressures of the Premier League and looked very comfortable at right-back.

The victory over Fulham was West Ham’s first in five league matches and it certainly boosted their chances of making a strong finish to the league.

Pellegrini should continue with Fredericks as a regular starter for the remainder of the season and use Zabaleta as a substitute when needed.

The former Manchester City man’s experience can undoubtedly not be questioned but given Frederick’s good showings of late, he might be of higher value when used from the bench in critical times.

Fredericks showed against Crystal Palace that he is a modern day right-back, who is capable of attacking down the flank with pace, while making quick recoveries in defence when needed.

Fredericks, who is valued at £3.6 million (by Transfermarkt), will definitely add to the East London club’s lethal attacking threat.

‘Incredible’ Houssem Aouar should be top of Liverpool’s priority list

Liverpool will surely be dipping back into the transfer market after Naby Keita, the midfield maestro that never was, has surely earned himself flop status after a poor debut season in the Premier League.

More dropped points at the weekend mean Liverpool are slowly dipping out of the reckoning for the Premier League title, and as much as Klopp wants to blame anything and everything for their demise, one finger must be pointed at the evident creative void in the centre of the park.

The Merseyside club are certainly not short of quality in the forward positions, nor are they in defence, with two of the most formidable units in European football.

Their midfield, however, is distinctly average and has been propped up by the likes of James Milner and Jordan Henderson for far too long now.

Yes, the introduction of Fabinho has injected some much-needed talent into proceedings, but he’s very much a like-for-like player compared to who they already have.

Keita should have been the man to revolutionise their creative game.

Unfortunately for Liverpool fans, he has not lived up to expectations and as such the club will likely be back in the market for a playmaker this summer.

But who?

Chasing Houssem Aouar should be of paramount importance.

The Frenchman would not be Liverpool’s first major Lyon target having already failed to sign target Nabil Fakir last summer. But they should not be deterred.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola called Aouar ‘incredible’ after his performance against his side in the Champions League, adding: “He’s always very calm with the ball at his feet, with an excellent technical quality.” (source: BBC Sport).

And that is very much his game.

The 20-year-old is a phenomenally talented player operating with a maturity beyond his years.

From what we have seen of Aouar matches in Ligue 1, he is an incredibly composed player whose distribution is second to none; his astute tactical awareness is complemented by an impressive ability to evaluate and analysis potential creative opportunities or threats from all areas of the pitch; and he is decent enough in front of goal as well with scoring six in all competitions.

Great player who surely become one of the world’s best.

Injury News: Longstaff out for the rest of the season

[ad_pod ]

Sean Longstaff is expected to miss the rest of the season, Newcastle have confirmed, but will this drag the Magpies back into the relegation scrap?

What’s the story?

Longstaff was replaced with a knee injury in Newcastle’s 2-0 defeat at West Ham, and the club have confirmed that the youngster suffered ligament damage.

In a statement on their official site, the Magpies said: “Newcastle United can confirm midfielder Sean Longstaff is likely to miss the remainder of the 2018/19 season with a knee ligament injury.”

There is light at the end of the tunnel though, as The Chronicle reports that the midfielder will not require surgery to repair the damage in his knee.

This means he could be back in light training by the end of March, and will presumably be 100 per cent fit by the beginning of next season.

Silver linings

Longstaff has been fabulous for Rafael Benitez since breaking into the side, simultaneously providing both physicality and defensive contribution as well as calmness in possession and high quality passing.

This is something that St. James’ Park simply hasn’t seen recently barring the odd Jonjo Shelvey master-class, and there’s no doubt they will miss the 21 year-old.

However, with Shelvey, Mo Diame and Ki Sung-yueng all waiting in the wings, Benitez still has more options in midfield that he had at this point last season, when he was able to not only escape the drop but surge up into the top ten.

With Fulham and Huddersfield all but doomed, Magpies fans should take solace in the fact that Cardiff will play four of the top six in their last nine games. The Bluebirds have also lost Sol Bamba to injury, so they are definitely the favourites to go down.

As far as knee ligament injuries go, if Longstaff returns next season in perfect shape with the club’s Premier League status still in tact, this is about as good as it gets.

Sadio Mane exit would be beyond gutting for Liverpool

Sadio Mane could be in line for a move away from Anfield as returning Real Madrid boss eyes him amongst the club’s top targets.

Senegal international and Liverpool star man Mane has been in scintillating form recently, scoring five goals in his previous five games, ensuring that his side does not fall any further behind in the title race.

Real Madrid, on the other hand, are having torrid time over in Spain. Dumped out of almost every possible competition in the space of a week – including their beloved Champions League – and desperately in need of some inspiration, they have turned to their former boss Zinedine Zidane.

The Frenchman has a serious task on his hand to instil a sense of pride back in the squad, and with Gareth Bale facing down the barrel of squabbling, spoilt, greedy, hostile Real Madrid fans, there could well be a ‘star player’ vacancy opening up.

The Daily Mail have suggested that Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, Sadio Mane and Paul Pogba are all targets this summer, and with Mane being a previous target of Zidane’s there is every chance he could be the one to make the move – especially given the other candidates current position. Indeed, Spanish media outlet El Chiringuito TV also relayed the claims, scaring Kopites even more. we’re sure.

From Liverpool’s perspective, it would be an incredible ill-informed decision to allow Mane to leave next season.

As an integral part of Liverpool’s start forward line-up, to lose him would certainly disrupt the balance of the squad. And they will need all the chemistry they can get next season if they fail to secure Premier League glory this term.

Mane, on the other hand, may be convinced.

He has been very impressive since arriving at Anfield but has scantly seen his efforts come to fruition, with any form of silverware still evading him.

Liverpool fans, how gutted would you be to potentially lose Mane? Join the discussion by commenting below…

A slice of Premier League genius: Des Walker

[ad_pod ]

Each week on Football FanCast we will be celebrating those special breed who lit up the Premier League with their unique brand of utter genius. This time out we pay homage to a centre-back who prompted existential crisis in even the very best forwards.

The most well-known and best chants dedicated to a singular star usually centre on a creative or forward player. There’s Giggs tearing opponents apart. There’s Jamie Vardy having a party. Ozil, so the Emirates faithful insist, is better than Zidane.

Elsewhere it is character that is largely championed. Steve Gerrard is f***ing hard while Stuart Pearce was celebrated for the psychotic nature of his competitiveness.

It is rare for a centre-back to have a song in his honour but of course they exist and have done so. Manchester City supporters like to sing about Vincent Kompany to the tune of Mrs Robinson and inform their captain that he is ‘loved more than he will know’. Going further back but remaining in Manchester, Gordon McQueen was six foot two, with eyes of blue and was after you: again, referencing and honouring combativeness.

Former Nottingham Forest, Sheffield Wednesday and England defender Des Walker also had his own tribute from the terraces and it rang out across the City Ground and Hillsborough for the duration of his twenty year career, usually following a break-away that saw the Hackney-born number six outstrip his opposite number for pace and knock the ball safely back to his keeper’s control. The song lacked humour; it even lacked endearment. It was a boast really, and as no-nonsense as they come, the latter aspect very much like the player himself. You’ll never beat Des Walker.

You’ve never beat Des Walker. It was a chant stripped of all nuance, leaving only the highest compliment you could possibly level at a defender. Walker wasn’t just good; he was so good it was futile even to attempt taking him on. In that regard it is the first, last and only example of an existential song originating from a football stadium.

‘He used to sing that song ‘You’ll never beat Des Walker!’ – he used to drive you mad when you were playing against him!’ Gary Lineker admitted years later, thinking back to the numerous occasions he’d been completely marked out of a game by his international team-mate.

Walker signed for Forest as an apprentice and went on to win the club’s Player of the Year award four years consecutively. In those same seasons he was inducted into the PFA Team of the Year too meaning beyond any reasonable doubt that in the lead-up to the Premier League’s founding he was – by some distance – the best defender out there. Yet when the razzmatazz of modern football all kicked off he was absent, having been sold to Sampdoria. The following year Forest were relegated.

A successful season in Serie A led to a prompt return to our shores as Sheffield Wednesday shelled out £2.75m for him and for eight campaigns he excelled for the Owls. In 2007, six years after his departure he was voted the best centre-back in the club’s history.

Walker read danger better than most and on the rare occasions that let him down he had a sprinter’s pace to atone but perhaps his greatest quality is one that sounds damning but is not meant so. He was a poor footballer but knowing this he never tried to be one. Instead he was the purest of defenders, first, foremost, and only that. He kept things simple and focused on doing the simple exceptionally well and in this regard it’s no wonder that Clough rated him so highly. It’s no wonder too that on those steps you can detect the sadness behind the magnanimous words.

It might seem counter-intuitive to flag up a goal as Walker’s slice of genius. After all, this was a player whose entire M.O. was to stop them occurring; sticking limpet-like to forwards; exasperating them into ineptitude; clearing his lines and intercepting with the minimum of fuss. Some context is required.

In 407 appearances for Forest, Desmond Sinclair Walker scored precisely once. In 800+ professional games – 59 of them for the Three Lions – he scored precisely once. Better still, it was a last minute equaliser.

It arrived on New Year’s Day in 1992, with Luton Town the visitors. The Hatters had scored in the opening minute and elsewhere dominated a game in which Forest were – in the words of Cloughie – ‘garbage’. Indeed so furious was the legendary gaffer that he missed the memorable moment, as he stormed to the dressing room ready to administer the almightiest of rollockings.

Things were desperate now for the home side as the ref checked his watch. Des Walker was up front. That’s how desperate they were. And eschewing subtlety the balls were lumped long and hard.

One found Walker in space, to the left of the penalty area. He took a touch. The crowd collectively experienced a double-whammy of realisation: that not only was a leveller forthcoming but it would derive from their hero who was always, absolutely always stationed at the other end. It was fired into the roof of the net ruthlessly and carnage ensued.

The shot was fierce. It was, aptly for the goal-scorer in question, unbeatable.

Sheffield Wednesday: Players must shrug off injuries to maintain play-off charge

With Wednesday relentless in their pursuit of the play-offs, and an unbeaten run of 12 league games under their belt, it would appear that the last thing they needed was an enforced week off due to internationals.

But in form midfielder Barry Bannan disagrees, and thinks that it has come at the ideal time for key players to recover from niggling injuries.

He told the Sheffield Star: “Before the game, probably, but we have picked up two more injuries with Hutch [Sam Hutchinson] and Fletch [Steven Fletcher] so it’s a good thing now to get them back and get those that have been carrying injuries back as well for after the international break.”

It was because of Hutchinson’s injury that Bannan moved to the central midfield role early in the Owls’ 4-2 win over Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, which saw the Scot weigh in with three assists.

Speaking about his role in the side, he added: “That’s what I’m here to do — to create goals for the team and try to dominate games and I’m proud of how I’m playing at the minute.

“Obviously I’d like to score goals but the biggest thing for me is probably getting assists and I’m delighted with how it’s gone in the last few weeks.”

Bannan has certainly caught the eye with his rich vein of form lately, something which was not lost on Scotland manager, Alex McLeish, who handed the 29-year-old a call up to the national side.

He was, obviously, delighted with his call up, and was disappointed to be forced to pull out due to a minor knock he picked up at the weekend.

But he insists Wednesday defender, Liam Palmer, will represent Wednesday well in the squad, and hopes that he gets some time on the pitch, something that seems more likely with Liverpool’s Andy Robertson ruled out of the game.

“He’s been brilliant, he deserves his call up and I’m delighted for him, hopefully he can get a game and get his first cap.

“He’s playing left-back, which is a position that is probably new to him and he’s been brilliant. He’s a great lad as well so everyone is really happy that he has got that international recognition.”

Despite Bannan’s obvious disappointment at having to withdraw from the national squad, it can only be a good thing for Wednesday with the player revelling in his pivotal role, and his influential displays being vital to their promotion hopes.

We think it is fantastic for Wednesday that their in form players are receiving international recognition, and the fact that some of their players can benefit from the week off, should be seen as a good thing.

The last thing that Wednesday need before a crucial few weeks, is a spate of  injuries to derail their charge.

What do you think about Bannan’s form at Hillsborough? Do you wish the international break had not arrived? Let us know your thoughts below…

The Chalkboard: Nathaniel Clyne must make big improvement against Leicester

[ad_pod ]

Bournemouth bowed out for the international break with a 2-2 draw with Newcastle and can perhaps feel unfortunate that they didn’t take all three points from the clash, with Matt Ritchie netting a late equaliser at the Vitality Stadium.

This lack of concentration in the final minutes is perhaps due to a lack of leaders on the pitch, with the Cherries keen to succeed with a youthful squad. As one of the more senior members, Nathaniel Clyne should certainly have been setting an example to the younger players at the weekend but failed.

On the chalkboard

Having been a fixture for Liverpool up until the 2017/18 season, from when injuries and Trent Alexander-Arnold kept him out of the starting XI, Clyne’s move to Bournemouth looked like a perfect move for all involved – the right-back would get game-time and a Cherries problem area would be solved.

With Champions League experience under his belt, he was surely expected to bring that kind of quality and confidence to the Cherries’ back-line but he was by far their worst performer last time out.

Come on Clyne

The 27-year-old’s resume would lead you to believe that he would succeed if you threw him into a mid-table side and be one of the most dependable players in the XI, however his performance against the Magpies was poor.

The former Southampton man completed just 56% of his attempted passes – likely reminding Liverpool fans why the aforementioned Alexander-Arnold is first choice at Anfield – while also attempting just 1 cross.

Check out the below above to see football played as you’ve never seen it before… in a maze!

At least he was solid in defence, right? Wrong. The number 23 completed just 1 tackle and failed to intercept or clear the ball once all game, while Charlie Daniels on the opposite flanks completed 3, 1 and 2 respectively.

The Cherries visit Leicester next time out and Eddie Howe will surely be expecting much more from the 5 ft 9 January arrival.

Pundit View: Ron Walker has got his opinion of Raul Jimenez spot on

[ad_pod ]

At the beginning of the week, Sky Sports came together to list their best signings of the season. Speaking to pundits, Ron Walker was under the opinion that Wolves’ Raul Jimenez deserved to be in the conversation.

What’s been said?

A major reason behind Walker’s claims appears to be just how pivotal he has been to the Midlands club fantastic season, with Nuno Santo’s men sitting in seventh.

Signing on loan from Benfica, he has been a revelation but despite a slow start to the campaign, the Sky Sports pundit has explained that his form over the middle months of the season means he’s been one of the best signings of 2018/19.

Here’s what Walker said about the Mexican striker.

“Despite scoring 82 goals on their way to promotion to the Premier League last season Wolves’ top-scoring striker, Leo Bonatini, netted only 12 times in all competitions. Enter stage left Raul Jimenez, the latest in a long line of imports from Portuguese clubs, and having a difficult time of it at domestic champions Benfica.

“A season-long loan to Molineux took its time to get going, with three goals in Jimenez’s first 13 Premier League games.

“But the Mexican has got his mojo back and his quality as a traditional number nine, as well as the 15 goals he has scored for his loan club, have both played a big part in their success this season.”

Is he right?

It’s incredibly hard not to admire the way Wolves have played this season. They’ve become one of the best teams to watch in the Premier League and are without a doubt one of the most impressive newly promoted sides ever seen.

Jimenez has played a major part in that and without him, Wolves would be far worse off. That means he should easily be in the discussion for the best new player to arrive in England’s top flight.

We’ve found Raul Jimenez’s No. 1 fan and… it’s a little scary. Check out the video below to see for yourself…

He hasn’t necessarily been the best signing this term but he’s scored some crucial goals this campaign which have made him an instant hit in Wolverhampton. Finding the net against Liverpool, Tottenham, Manchester United and Chelsea provides evidence of just how influential he’s been.

The players in behind the 27-year-old, such as Diogo Jota and Ruben Neves, means that he is able to flourish and the club simply has to make his temporary loan move into a permanent one this summer.

Jurgen Klopp heaps praise on Ralph Hasenhuttl

[ad_pod ]

Southampton host Liverpool on Friday – the third time in the last six matches that the Saints have faced top-six opposition – when they will be hoping to, once again, build on their excellent displays of late and move one step closer to safety.

As we all know, though, the Reds are having an unbelievable season and will be hoping to leave St Mary’s Stadium with all three points – so tight is the title race that they won’t accept anything less.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have come on leaps and bounds since last year, when they were a relentless attacking machine who could win 4-3 most week, to one which wins 4-0 instead – having former Southampton man Virgil van Dijk at the back helps, too.

The German can recognise managerial brilliance when he sees it and has heaped praise on his opposite number, Ralph Hasenhuttl, ahead of another season-defining week for the Reds:

“In the time Ralph [Hasenhuttl] is in at Southampton I think they are eighth in the form table – that gives you good information about the intensity of the game probably.

“[Southampton] play a clear style of football. I have to say the job he is doing there is incredible. He brought young players in, academy players, a pretty brave decision.

“It’s a really good side, and the analysis was really interesting because it doesn’t look like a team that fights to stay in the league. They do what they do and they stick to it.”

Indeed, Klopp is right to praise the Saints boss – he has completed flipped their season on its head since taking over from Mark Hughes in December and the south coast outfit look almost certain to evade the drop, despite their situation looking pretty bleak a few months ago.

The impact Ralph Hasenhüttl has had at Southampton is certainly evident in the video below…

They were unlucky not to take at least a point from their clash with Manchester United at the start of March – that was their best performance of the season then – but, since, they have carried that momentum into every game and have been able to get the results their displays have warranted.

Having got the better of Spurs last time out, will they cause another big upset this weekend?
