Manchester United’s desire to "build" around Paul Pogba is a dangerous game

As reported by Sky Sports, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has insisted that he is still planning on building the Manchester United side around Paul Pogba, amid speculation the midfielder could be leaving.

What’s the word?

Reports in recent weeks and months had suggested that Pogba could be on his way out of Old Trafford this summer after an up-and-down campaign. The France World Cup winner has seen his name linked with the likes of Real Madrid and Juventus, and his agent, Mino Raiola, confirmed the player’s desire to leave.

However, Solskjaer has now suggested that the Frenchman continues to be a big part of his plans and revealed he could still be an important part of his line-up.

The United boss said: “Paul is a fantastic player, a fantastic human being and has always been a great professional. I’ve had a great relationship with him, I had him in the reserves a few years back.

“And I said (previously), ‘if he’s in your squad, you’d build your team around him’, and I haven’t changed that much since then, so I would say the same now.”

A risky game

Another tactical ploy to get him to stay? Solskjaer’s latest comments on his mercurial midfielder come on the back of him insisting in recent weeks that there is an “agenda” against his player and that he fully backs him.

The Norwegian is seemingly adamant on retaining Pogba’s services beyond the end of the summer transfer window and the reported decision of Juventus to end their interest in the 26-year-old certainly strengthens United’s case.

But in being so unequivocally sure-fire in claiming he wants to “build” his side around Pogba, the room for anything but him wearing the Red Devils shirt come the beginning of the season is non-existent. In a sense, Solskjaer has backed United into a corner and selling him now after being so effusive in his praise of the Frenchman would be tantamount to a failure.

Lots of Manchester United fans have taken to Twitter to discuss Aaron Wan-Bissaka, after the right-back made his debut for the club against Perth Glory.

The England Under-21 international, signed from Crystal Palace in a deal worth £50m, was making his first ever appearance for the Red Devils since his move alongside another new boy in Daniel James.

Wan-Bissaka impressed on his debut, putting in a number of trademarks tackles whilst also proving to be fairly tidy with his passing – the 21-year-old completed five out of five tackles and also made 35 passes out of an attempted 37.

The United faithful will presumably be overjoyed with the addition of the 6 foot ace, as they were seriously disappointed with the performances of Ashley Young at right-back last season.

It may only have been a pre-season friendly, but the signs are promising for Wan-Bissaka and the United fans have every reason to get excited over Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first ever signing as manager.

Let’s see how the United fans on Twitter reacted to his debut…

The 10 biggest stories in world football from the last 24 hours

Yesterday saw some big moves, with Kieran Trippier completing his switch to Atletico Madrid, Sebastien Haller signing for West Ham and Steve Bruce being appointed as Newcastle’s new manager. But what has happened in the world of football today? Find out Thursday’s biggest stories with your one-stop shop for football news…

After his performances both for Ajax and the Netherlands during the last campaign, it was always going to be difficult for the Eredivisie outfit to keep hold of Matthijs De Ligt this summer – especially with the names who were linked to him, which included Manchester United and Barcelona. However, it is Juventus who have clinched the 19-year-old. The Old Lady have paid £67.5m for the centre-back, who has signed a five-year contract with the club. It is another big name capture for the Serie A side, who have already added Aaron Ramsey and Adrien Rabiot to their ranks.

France U21 midfielder Christopher Nkunku had previously been in talks with Arsenal, but he will not be moving to the Emirates this summer. That is because he has joined RB Leipzig on a five-year contract from Ligue 1’s Paris-Saint Germain. The deal is reportedly worth £14m. The 21-year-old made 29 appearances for Thomas Tuchel’s team last season, but with the competition for a place in the starting line-up being so fierce at the Parc des Princes, the switch looks like a wise decision from the youngster.

There have been persistent rumours about Harry Maguire’s potential switch to Manchester United, and the latest news is that the Leicester City defender would be “honoured” to play for the Red Devils and would like to emulate United legend Rio Ferdinand. The England international is growing increasingly frustrated by the Foxes’ stance, with the King Power Stadium outfit not wanting to sell. It had previously been reported that the two clubs had agreed a fee for the 26-year-old, but there has been little news on that front since.

Daniel Sturridge is currently without a club having left Liverpool at the start of the month, and he now won’t be able to play until August 1st. That is because he has been banned until the end of July for breaching the sport’s betting rules. The 29-year-old was found guilty by an FA commission on two charges. Firstly, that he had told his brother Leon to bet on a possible move to Sevilla, and that he had given him inside information. Another nine charges were dismissed. The former Chelsea and Manchester City striker will also have to pay a £75,000 fine.

With just one year left on his contract, Tottenham fans would have been forgiven for fearing the potential exit of Jan Vertonghen this summer. However, the Belgium international himself has poured cold water on and speculation of a move away this summer. “I love being here. I feel great with the manager, he’s been supporting me and making me a better player,” said the former Ajax man. “I’ve got everything I want. It’s the best club to play for at the moment”. However, he did not confirm or deny that he would sign a new contract, explaining, “I’ve got a year left, I will have to see what happens.”

It’s clearly a busy time to work for Atletico Madrid. Los Rojiblancos already completed the signing of Kieran Trippier yesterday, and now they have announced the capture of Mario Hermoso. The defender joins from fellow La Liga outfit Espanyol. The 24-year-old has signed a five-year deal with the Wanda Metropolitano outfit after two seasons with his former club. Hermoso is the 10th player to join Diego Simeone’s side this summer.

Tottenham have already broken their transfer record once this summer with the signing of Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon, and it seems they may be about to do it again. It is being reported that Spurs are about to step up their attempts to sign Giovani Lo Celso. The Argentina international is rated at £70m by current club Real Betis. The 23-year-old attacking midfielder scored nine goals for the Seville-based club last season and provided seven assists.

Chelsea’s two-window transfer ban is stopping them from bringing any new players in, but it isn’t preventing anybody leaving the club. The biggest loss this summer has of course been Eden Hazard, who joined Real Madrid, and now another Blue has departed. The Stamford Bridge outfit have confirmed that Daishawn Redan has joined Hertha Berlin on a long-term contract. “I’m happy that the transfer to Hertha BSC has now gone through. I can’t wait to get underway,” said the 18-year-old of the switch to Hertha’s official website.

Kieran Tierney has been subject of intense interest from Arsenal this summer, with Celtic having rejected a bid of £25m last week. The Gunners were believed to be making another offer for the 22-year-old, but Bhoys manager Neil Lennon has confirmed that the Scottish Premier League champions have received no further approach from last season’s Europa League finalists. There is still time for Unai Emery and co to make their move, of course, but their transfer budget will make them unwilling to spend too much.

Salomon Rondon impressed in the Premier League last season as he scored 11 goals for Newcastle. He is clearly a popular figure with Rafa Benitez, who was the Toon’s manager last season and  joined Chinese Super League club Dalian Yifang earlier this month. And the former Liverpool boss will soon make the Venezuela international one of his first signings at his new team. It is being reported (Sky Sports Transfer Blog, 18/07, 16.15) that the West Brom striker has completed a medical in China. As such, a move should be soon completed.

Premier League Transfer Roundup: Juve make Lukaku bid, Webster offer, Everton eye Lemina

[ad_pod ]

Another day goes by as the Premier League prepares for the new season and the end of the summer transfer window. Expect the news to come thick and fast between now and August 8th. Today’s Premier League transfer roundup includes an offer made by Juventus for Romelu Lukaku, Brighton’s bid for Adam Webster and Everton’s interest in Mario Lemina.

Juve make Lukaku bid

Report: The Sun is reporting that Juventus have made an offer of £10m plus Mario Mandzukic and Paulo Dybala for striker Romelu Lukaku. Dybala’s switch could be an issue, as he apparently wants parity with United’s top earners.

Verdict: The 26-year-old Belgium international wants to leave Old Trafford this summer, that much has already been made clear, and the Old Lady have entered the race after Internazionale had looked like the favourites to sign him. Both Dybala and Mandzukic are coming off average seasons by their standards – they both netted 10 goals each in all competitions – and as such, they may not be a part of Maurizio Sarri’s new plans in Turin. The one issue could be the former Bayern Munich forward’s age. He is 33 years old and does not have long left in him. Having said that, he would be a great option to have as a back up to Marcus Rashford, who may finally get his wish to play through the middle for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team.

How likely is the deal? 6.5/10

Brighton offer £20m for Webster

Report: According to Sky Sports’ Transfer Blog (30/07, 14.50), Brighton have made a bid of £20m plus add-ons for Bristol City defender Adam Webster. The Seagulls are hopeful that a deal can be completed for the centre-back.

Verdict: It is a sign of the times in England that a player who has only once in his career made more than 28 league appearances in a single season, and not one in the country’s top tier, can be the subject of an eight-figure bid, but that is exactly the case with 24-year-old Webster. It is not as though Brighton lack options in defence, and they have already signed Matt Clarke from Portsmouth during this transfer window. The former Ipswich Town centre-back may well be a decent footballer, but Lee Johnson and co would surely be mad not to accept such a big offer for a player whose C.V is lacking in top-level experience.

How likely is the deal? 7.5/10

Everton eye Lemina

Report: It is being reported by Sky Sports that Everton are interested in signing Mario Lemina from Southampton. The Toffees are one of a number of clubs interested in the Gabon international, including Manchester United and Arsenal.

Verdict: With Idrissa Gueye having completed his move to PSG, Everton require another defensive midfielder, and Lemina could fit the bill. The former Juventus man’s stats did not differ too much from the Senegal international’s last season – only in the tackling department was there any real difference – whilst the 25-year-old even managed to score one goal, which Gueye failed to do. There must be a reason, though, why PSG, one of Europe’s biggest clubs, made the former Lille man such a priority, whilst his Saints counterpart remains on the South coast. Ralph Hassenhuttl and co are only looking for £18m for the midfielder though, which would leave the Merseyside club with a handy profit of around £10m.

How likely is the deal? 7/10

Liverpool have no way of knowing if Jurgen Klopp can trust target Fraser Forster

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to The Daily Mail, Southampton keeper Fraser Forster is a target for Liverpool, who have just six days left to get their business done before the deadline.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Reds still have Simon Mignolet on their books as backup to No.1 glovesman Alisson Becker, although reports had previously surfaced suggesting that the Belgian wanted to leave in search of game time.

The former Sunderland stopper remains at the club for now, although The Daily Mail have reported that Forster is on their list of targets.

Sky Sports had revealed that the England international had been put up for sale by the Saints this summer, along with another England international and Liverpool target in Alex McCarthy, so one would assume a deal wouldn’t be too difficult to complete if the Merseysiders were seriously interested.

[ad_pod ]

How can Jurgen Klopp trust Forster?

There comes a fair amount of ambiguity over a new signing even when they’ve been playing well for their previous employers, so you can only begin to think of how many question marks are looming over Forster given his recent history.

The former Celtic man has featured just once for Southampton competitively since a 5-2 defeat against Spurs on Boxing Day back in 2017, with his most recent appearance coming in a 3-0 loss to West Ham in the penultimate game of last season.

In that time, the 6 foot 7 stopper has slipped behind McCarthy and Angus Gunn in the pecking order, and he hasn’t even appeared in a cup game during his time on the sidelines.

Even some Southampton fans on Twitter don’t appear to be too fussed by the possibility of him leaving St Mary’s, judging by the way they reacted to Liverpool’s interest in him – one supporter described it as “a Southampton to Liverpool transfer I can get on board with.”

As a result of the 31-year-old’s severe lack of football over the last year-and-a-half, you could easily argue the fact that Jurgen Klopp wouldn’t have a clue what he’d be getting if he brought Forster to Anfield – it would almost be a complete stab in the dark, and there’s no way the German can trust the 31-year-old to step in when needed given his complete lack of football.
