Not Wirtz: Liverpool star is in danger of becoming the new Naby Keita

Liverpool slipped to back-to-back defeats in the Premier League for the first time under Arne Slot on Saturday when they lost 2-1 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

A last-gasp finish from Willian Estevao secured all three points for the home side in a game that they deserved to win with their front-foot approach.

More and more questions will be asked of the club’s recruitment work during the summer transfer window, as Florian Wirtz came on at half-time and failed to turn the game in Liverpool’s failure.

The Germany international arrived at Anfield from Bayer Leverkusen in a £115m deal in the summer, but he is still searching for his first goal contribution in the Premier League.

Wirtz lost six of his eight duels and created one chance in 45 minutes against Chelsea, per Sofascore, which shows that he struggled off the ball and did not add much to the team in possession.

Given that he came in from the Bundesliga for a gigantic transfer fee, there may be some comparisons drawn to the signing of Naby Keita from RB Leipzig, but that may not be fair.

Why Florian Wirtz is not the next Naby Keita

The Reds paid £52.75m to sign the central midfielder, who officially joined the club in 2018, from Leipzig, and he failed to live up to his price tag.

In five seasons at Anfield, Keita produced just 11 goals and seven assists in 129 appearances in all competitions, per Transfermarkt, which shows that he did not provide consistent quality at the top end of the pitch.

He had scored 17 goals and provided 15 assists in 71 matches for Leipzig in Germany, which means that he was unable to translate his form from his previous club over to his time with Liverpool.

Whilst Wirtz has not had the goals and assists that he would have wanted by this point, the German star’s underlying numbers suggest that he is not on course to be the next Bundesliga flop, like Keita was.

The 22-year-old attacking midfielder is doing the right things at the top end of the pitch, but needs something to go his way to start racking up goals and assists on a regular basis.

As you can see in the table above, Wirtz ranks highly among his positional peers for input, with chances created, xA, and xG on target, but the output, goals and assists, is not quite there yet.

If he continues to take high-quality shots and create chances for his teammates on a regular basis, the goals and assists will follow and he will not be deemed to be the next Keita at Anfield.

This is why Wirtz, who assisted Hugo Ekitike on his debut in the Community Shield, is not going to be the next Keita, because he is on the right path to becoming a success at Anfield.

However, there is another summer signing for Liverpool from the Bundesliga who may be in danger of becoming the next version of the Guinea international after a rough start to life on Merseyside.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Liverpool splashed out £29.5m to sign Netherlands international Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer in an attempt to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold, who departed on a free transfer to sign for Real Madrid.

Unfortunately, the former Manchester City and Celtic full-back has had a difficult time of things since his return to English football, and is now in danger of becoming the new Keita.

Why Jeremie Frimpong may be the next Naby Keita

As aforementioned, the former Leipzig midfielder was a flop from the Bundesliga at Anfield as he failed to translate his attacking form in Germany over to the Premier League with the Reds.

Frimpong delivered 30 goals and 44 assists in 190 appearances in all competitions for Leverkusen during his time with the Bundesliga side, playing as a wing-back more often than not.

His output in the final third led the official Bundesliga YouTube channel to question whether or not the Dutch dynamo was the best attacking full-back in the world earlier this year.

Slot, however, does not play with traditional wing-backs, and Frimpong has found the transition back to playing as a regular right-back, which is the role he played for Celtic earlier in his career, a difficult one.

The 24-year-old star has found himself third in the pecking order at right-back at this moment in time, as he was an unused substitute in the defeat to Chelsea that saw Connor Bradley start the match and Dominik Szoboszlai end the game at right-back.

Frimpong, who was described as a “breathtaking” talent by U23 scout Antonio Mango, has only started one match in the Premier League so far this season, and has been an unused substitute on two occasions.

As you can see in the table above, the Dutchman has struggled on and off the ball in the top-flight so far this season, losing the majority of his physical duels whilst also failing to create a single chance for his teammates in three appearances.

The former Man City academy graduate was given an opportunity to start on the right wing against Galatasaray in the Champions League, but he ended the game with no goals, no assists, and seven out of nine duels lost, per Sofascore.

These statistics, in the Champions League and the Premier League, show that Frimpong has struggled with a new role and the increased physicality of English football, which is why he is in danger of becoming the next Keita.

Three games, 664 runs conceded – GT bowlers 'losing form at the wrong time'

Tom Moody singles out Sai Kishore for his steady performances, says that the absence of effective bowling partnerships has left GT vulnerable

ESPNcricinfo staff26-May-20251:30

Moody: ‘A number of GT bowlers are losing form at the wrong time’

Despite a sparkling run in IPL 2025, which made them the first team to qualify for the playoffs, Gujarat Titans (GT) find themselves grappling with an untimely dip in bowling form, a concern that could prove costly at the business end of the tournament. Known for their disciplined attack, GT’s bowling unit has appeared unsettled after the mini-break. They have lost two of their three games after the IPL’s resumption – after winning eight of 11 before the interruption – and in those, their bowlers have conceded 664 runs and picked up just ten wickets. After their latest loss – by 83 runs to bottom-placed Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Sunday – Tom Moody singled out R Sai Kishore – the only one to have taken at least a wicket in each of those three matches – for his consistency, but noted that the absence of effective bowling partnerships have left GT vulnerable. While Prasidh Krishna – who has 23 wickets and is in second place on the Purple Cap table – and Mohammed Siraj have contributed, their recent performances have been a bit up and down.”It is a concern that a number of their bowlers are losing form at the wrong time,” Moody said on ESPNcricinfo’s Time Out show. “Coming into the finals, one area of your game you want to be absolutely confident with is your bowling attack and everyone not looking over their shoulder but looking to take the responsibility themselves. And I look at their attack and really there’s only one bowler that’s bowling well and the rest are trying to find form.Related

Noor overtakes Prasidh to move to the top of Purple Cap table

“And that’s probably being a little bit harsh on Sai Kishore because I think he’s been quite consistent, but it’s nearly like his bowling has been swept away along with many other bowlers purely because they haven’t been able to build the most important thing, and that’s those partnerships with the ball.”Anil Kumble echoed Moody’s thoughts, and highlighted GT’s struggles during the bowling powerplays, which have increased the pressure on the bowling unit, which has had perhaps its biggest name – Rashid Khan – in possibly the poorest T20 form of his career.”When things have not started off well for GT in those first six overs, the pressure on the bowling attack has been pretty obvious,” Kumble said. “That’s where the Rashid wicket-taking ability is sort of missing now, and that’s why they’re probably struggling. To counter this problem, Moody suggested that GT might need to think differently and even open with Sai Kishore.3:07

Moody on GT: Not the time to press the panic button

“I just wonder, just sowing a seed for moving forward, whether they need to actually rearrange their bowling attack,” Moody said. “Maybe do something out of the box, like open with Sai Kishore, you know, have an over or two of them. He’s well-equipped to be able to do that, and it just gives them that little bit of a point of difference as a bowling unit.”Moody: ‘Not the time to press that panic button’Moody and Kumble emphasised the importance of staying calm and focused as GT approach the final stages of the tournament. In Moody’s opinion, it was essential not to panic but to reflect on the strengths while working on small improvements quietly, away from the public eye.”For all the teams, at this time, it’s not the time to press that panic button,” Moody said. “It’s the time to reflect on what are we really doing well and focusing on those areas and highlighting them and celebrating those areas and just quietly going about trying to patch up a couple of gaps without it being sort of seen in a public domain, whether it be through the press or whether it be in the dressing room in front of the whole squad – ‘we must be improving here and here and these are the gaps we’re missing out on’, you know, just quietly going around on a one-to-one basis and reassuring players but also just reminding them of a couple of areas that just might need a little bit of sharpening.4:42

‘The zip has been missing in Rashid’s bowling’

“Players need to have that sort of free mind and not sort of worrying about the consequences of what’s happened in the past or what may happen if we fall down that same track as what we did in our last two games. So, again, it’s preserving confidence, preserving the culture that you’ve built within that playing group. So you’re celebrating that and you’re trying to keep everyone upbeat and positive, because at the end of the day, there’s a lot of tired bodies, there’s a lot of mental fatigue there as well. So you need to be mindful of all those things to make sure that everyone’s feeling really positive about what’s ahead of them.”Kumble said that teams needed to recognise and celebrate the good work that got them to this stage of the tournament.”I think what was important was also to look at all the good things that they’ve done to be here,” Kumble said. “There were ten teams, all of them equally good. Yes, the points table says that Chennai [CSK] is No. 10, and then you have Rajasthan [RR] at nine, and the rest of them. But generally, if you look at it on paper, all of those teams are really, really good. It’s just that one match here, there, things could have been different.”So, you need to celebrate that and then look at whether it is Qualifier or Eliminator, whatever it is, one game at a time. Focus on that and then look at how well the team did in those important moments and try and win those key moments.”

Bad news for Thelwell: TalkSport pundit shares "rumbles" from Rangers manager target

As Rangers’ search for a manager continues, a TalkSPORT pundit has shared what he’s heard from one candidate’s camp that reflects badly on Kevin Thelwell and the Ibrox higher ups.

Latest on Rangers' search for a manager

After confirming that Steven Smith, Brian Gilmour, Rhys Owen and Sal Bibbo will lead Rangers against Dundee United this weekend, it’s clear that the 49ers are still finalising their next manager.

It’s no real surprise that they’ve shown plenty of patience when deciding the next man for the job, however. After all, Russell Martin lasted just 123 days and represents the dire start that the 49ers have endured at Ibrox. Simply put, after that failure, they must get their next appointment right.

With their patience has come several candidates, ranging from the likes of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer all the way to current favourite Kevin Muscat. The latter has emerged as an option for the second time in his career, having been linked with the job before Philippe Clement arrived in 2023.

Unlike 2023, however, the job could now be Muscat’s to take. The 52-year-old has enjoyed an excellent spell at Shanghai Port and is on course to win the Chinese Super League with just four games to go. But that hands Rangers quite the dilemma.

Rangers share coaching news as four faces named to staff ahead of Dundee United

The Gers will hope for a bounce back result at Ibrox.

ByBen Goodwin Oct 16, 2025

If they want to hire Muscat, then they may be forced to wait until November 22 before he officially arrives. That means that they’d have to find a temporary solution for the next seven games in a decision that would certainly do Thelwell no favours.

The sporting director is already under pressure and one talkSPORT pundit has now shared news that may only compile his misery at Ibrox.

Tanner shares "rumbles" in Gerrard camp

Speaking about the Liverpool legend’s recent decision to reject a return to Ibrox, talkSPORT pundit David Tanner shared what he’s heard from Steven Gerrard’s camp about Rangers, the 49ers and Thelwell.

Given how things have started for Thelwell, from appointing Martin to signing a group of players that are yet to make their mark, more criticism is the last thing that he needs.

In the end, however, the 49ers were seemingly not ready to compromise their sporting director’s role to welcome Gerrard back to Ibrox. Whether they live to regret that decision will certainly be interesting to watch in the coming months.

Nat Sciver-Brunt 57* leads England to 3-0 sweep in rain-wrecked final ODI

Sarah Glenn takes three as West Indies limp to 106 for 8 either side of a five-hour delay

Another experimental England side, led by Nat Sciver-Brunt’s half-century and three wickets to Sarah Glenn, romped to victory at a rain-hit Taunton and a 3-0 sweep of their ODI series against West Indies, leaving the visitors winless from six matches all tour.Having swept the T20 leg 3-0 and won the first two ODIs by more than 100 runs each, England mixed up their batting order, elevating captain Sciver-Brunt and Sophia Dunkley to open while Amy Jones, who had reprised her opening role with Tammy Beaumont for the first time in five years earlier in the series with great success, dropped back to the middle order and Beaumont sat out.Dunkley took the lead initially, easing to 26 off 21 balls as she consistently punished any bad balls to the boundary. Sciver-Brunt, meanwhile, reached 2 off seven before her first boundary, smashing a short one from Jannillea Glasgow wide of midwicket in the fourth over. The pair put on 40 runs together before Dunkley was trapped lbw by Karishma Ramharack. From there, Sciver-Brunt switched gears, powering to an unbeaten 57 off 33 balls to take England to victory by nine runs with 10.1 overs to spare.Alice Capsey, promoted to No.3 in place of Emma Lamb, who scored a quick-fire half-century in that position during the second ODI, finished on 20 not out off 11 as England reached 109 for 1, easily passing their target of 106, set under the DLS method.Play had resumed after a five-hour rain delay with West Indies 43 for 3 off 12.3 overs and the match reduced to a maximum of 21 overs per side. Qiana Joseph top-scored for the tourists with 34 while a late flourish from Aaliyah Alleyne with 27 off 18 pushed West Indies to 106 for 8 at the end of their innings.Glenn cleaned up three wickets after the restart to keep a lid on West Indies’ scoring after Em Arlott had made early inroads, reducing them to 4 for 3 inside four overs.England won the toss and chose to bowl first under heavy skies and predictions of imminent rain, which arrived as the players ran onto the field. They managed to start on time, and it was quite the beginning for England as Kate Cross removed youngster Realeanna Grimmond with the second ball of the match. There was to be no repeat of Grimmond’s fifty on ODI debut in the previous game when, standing in for injured captain Hayley Matthews at the top of the order for the second time in a row, she nicked through to the keeper while chasing one that moved away. Two wickets in two overs from seamer Arlott had West Indies floundering. The first was full and straight, moving back in a touch as Zaida James played all around it and had her middle stump rattled. The second, an inswinger that rapped Stafanie Taylor on the front knee roll as she strode forward was given out on umpire’s call despite Taylor’s attempts to overturn Sue Redfern’s lbw decision.Arlott was back in the side after sitting out the second ODI in Leicester as England continued to rotate players through their XI. In addition to changing their batting line-up, England also rested seamer Lauren Bell and left-arm spinner Linsey Smith, making way for spinners Charlie Dean and Glenn.West Indies, who confirmed on the eve of the match that Matthews would miss the game with the shoulder injury which kept her out of the second ODI, welcomed back Joseph at the top of the order after illness had kept her out of the previous game.Joseph was unbeaten on 21 from 24 balls when the rain properly set in with just shy of an hour’s play done, prompting the long stoppage.Cross and Arlott were bowled out by the restart, given the reduction in overs, but when Dean resumed her second over, which had been interrupted by the rain delay, she struck first ball back as Shemaine Campbelle advanced on a fuller delivery which slid under the bat an into Jones’ gloves to see West Indies’ stand-in captain stumped for a sluggish 18 off 35 balls.Glenn followed up next over by bowling Shabika Gajnabi and Alice Davidson-Richards plucked a sharp one-handed catch out of the air at mid-off to remove Jannillea Glasgow off Lauren Filer.West Indies needed Joesph to swing the bat as she had to devastating effect at the T20 World Cup. She added 13 more runs to her tally before holing out to deep midwicket off Glenn, but it was Aaliyah Alleyne who produced the finish needed, striking five consecutive fours off Filer before she fell off the last ball, caught by Dunkley at point to give Glenn her third.

Wolves targeting Brendan Rodgers amid doubts about Vitor Pereira

Wolverhampton Wanderers are now targeting Brendan Rodgers as a replacement for Vitor Pereira, amid boardroom doubts about the Portuguese manager, who has made a very poor start to the campaign.

Indeed, Pereira is arguably fortunate to still be in a job, given that West Ham United and Nottingham Forest have already made changes, with the Old Gold sitting bottom of the Premier League, having failed to win any of their opening nine games.

Wolves have amassed just two points, which means they are currently six points adrift of safety, and the most recent result is likely to be particularly concerning, suffering a 3-2 defeat at home against newly-promoted Burnley.

Pereiera had to be dragged away from an altercation with the fans after the full-time whistle, before going on to urge the supporters to stick with the team in his post-match interview, saying: “We understand the frustration of the people and supporters but what I must say, if we fight united with them, we can win games and compete and achieve our targets – without them, it is impossible,”

“If we win two or three games in a row, things will change.”

The 57-year-old appears to be safe for the meantime, with the board not taking any drastic action after the Burnley defeat, but the club’s hierarchy are starting to have doubts about their manager…

Wolves targeting Rodgers to replace Pereira

According to a report from The Boot Room, Rodgers has now emerged as a target for Wolves, with the 52-year-old now available after resigning from his position as Celtic manager earlier this week.

Transfer expert Graeme Bailey adds: “Wolves, as it stands, are sticking with Vitor Pereira, but I understand the club’s hierarchy is split. Some wanted Pereira out after their weekend defeat to Burnley, so they are one to watch.”

As such, the former FC Porto manager may get a few more games to save his job, but if results don’t improve, the Northern Irishman could be brought in to replace him, having decided moving back to England is his “number one priority”.

After such a poor start to the season, the Old Gold may need a special manager to guide them to safety, and the ex-Celtic boss, who has managed 34 Champions League games, could fit the bill.

Gabriel Agbonlahor once lauded the former Leicester City boss for the work he did at the King Power Stadium, describing him as a “world-class” manager.

During his time with the Foxes, Rodgers, who often utilises a 4-3-3 formation, secured two fifth-place finishes and won the FA Cup, showcasing that he is capable of punching above his weight with a smaller club.

Despite signing a new three-year contract last month, there is only so long Wolves can stick with Pereira if results don’t improve dramatically, and the former Leicester manager could be the ideal replacement.
