Newcastle fans back Miguel Almiron despite early struggles at club

[ad_pod ]

Newcastle United paid Atlanta United in the region of £20m to sign Miguel Almiron during the January transfer window.

The 25-year-old has now played 11 times for the Magpies but is yet to register a goal or an assist for the Premier League club.

There is no doubting the Paraguay international’s enthusiasm and commitment to the cause.

But there will surely become a point when Newcastle want to see more end product from the attacker when considering his price tag.

Almiron played the full 90 minutes against Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon but found it difficult to make his mark against the Gunners.

The Newcastle fans, though, have thrown their support behind the attacker on social media, insisting that he will come good for the club during the 2019-20 campaign.

It is a big vote of confidence for the South American during a tough little period.

Liverpool fans discuss Philippe Coutinho’s move to Bayern Munich on loan

[ad_pod ]

Lots of Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to discuss Philippe Coutinho’s imminent move to Bayern Munich on loan.

The Bundesliga champions have struck a deal with Barcelona that will see the Brazil international move to the Allianz Arena on a one-year loan deal with the option to buy.

Coutinho has struggled significantly in La Liga since ditching Liverpool for Barcelona, where he handed in a transfer request and paid some of his own money in order to get away from Anfield.

The Barcelona supporters booed him last term and it seems as if the Spanish champions have been trying to get rid of the 27-year-old all summer – he was reportedly in talks to join Tottenham, but a move never materialised.

Liverpool reportedly rejected the chance to re-sign Coutinho this summer too, so his move to Bayern has become a talking point amongst lots of fans on Twitter.

Let’s see what the Reds supporters have been saying about the move…

Klopp on Coutinho: “I told him stay and they will end up building a statue in his honour. Go somewhere else, to Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and you will be just another player. Here you can be something more.”

Everton fans react to Andre Gomes’ shocking display against Aston Villa

[ad_pod ]

Following a difficult time at Barcelona, Andre Gomes appeared to get his career back on track in his first season on Merseyside.

The Portugal international appeared to silence the doubters with some impressive displays in midfield for Marco Silva’s side, and it was understandable when Everton splashed out £22m to sign him on a permanent deal.

Whilst last season was a relative success, his performance against Aston Villa on Friday night certainly brought up bad memories of his days in Barcelona.

The 26-year-old had a nightmare game against Dean Smith’s men, averaging a measly 79.5% pass accuracy and being dispossessed twice.

The former Valencia star also suffered the ignominy of being caught out by a quick free-kick for Villa’s opening goal, and never really recovered after that.

After seeing Gomes’s woeful performance, Everton fans took to Twitter to voice their concerns about the midfielder.

Many supporters of the Merseyside club slammed the Portuguese ace and one questioned why he simply wasn’t taken off at half-time by Silva.

Indeed, another fan suggested the Toffees had been “ripped off” by Barcelona based on the 6 foot 2 star’s performance.

Crystal Palace captain Luka Milivojevic’s comments could be a future concern

[ad_pod ]

Crystal Palace captain Luka Milivojevic put to bed any fears of him leaving the club on a free transfer next summer when he recently signed a new four-year contract extension, having previously had under 12 months remaining on his terms.

The Serbia international has emerged as a key player at Selhurst Park since signing from Olympiacos in a deal worth roughly £11m under Sam Allardyce.

Milivojevic has scored an impressive 24 goals in 97 appearances for the Eagles, averaging around a goal every four games from a midfield position – his latest comments, however, could be a potential concern for the future.

What did he say?

Speaking to Kurir, the 28-year-old said: “It was a little inconvenient because I was entering the last year of the contract.

“In football, it is a little inconvenient when you enter the last year, all sorts of things happen. I know, I didn’t get the top offer and I extended the contract.”

Suggest he was ready to move on to a bigger side

The last few words of Milivojevic’s comments are the ones that should be of potential concern.

He basically suggests that he because he didn’t get an offer from a top club he decided to renew his contract with the south London-based side, which suggests that he was all but ready to move on had such a bid for his services arrived.

If the Serb continues to impress in a red and blue shirt and gains more and more media attention – which does in turn attract the attention of a club who the midfielder deems as a ‘top’ side – then Palace could potentially be in danger of losing their captain seeing as he was seemingly ready to leave this summer.

He is clearly happy to stick around at Selhurst Park for now, but his comments do strongly suggest that he was ready to move on to a bigger club had the offer arrived – his words should serve as a potential future concern for the Eagles.

Everton: These fans couldn’t help but focus on Steven Naismith in video for Samuel Eto’o

It has been announced that Samuel Eto’o has retired from professional football, as reported by Goal.

The Cameroon legend had a long and illustrious career, which included four Champions Leagues and four African Player of the Year awards, as per Transfermarkt.

It also featured half a season at Everton, in which he played a total of 20 games across all competitions, scoring four and assisting twice.

To mark his retirement, the club tweeted out a video of his brace against Burnley:

While there was an appreciation for what the former Barcelona man did at Goodison Park, it was Steven Naismith who got the most attention as a consequence of the video.

After Eto’o had emphatically finished his second goal of the game, the Scotsman came along and smashed the ball towards goal from close range, with it eventually rebounding off the crossbar and careering into Tom Heaton’s head.

It is safe to say that Everton fans have found this part of the video very amusing, though the current England international probably didn’t at the time.

A selection of Twitter reaction to the video, including posts from laughing Everton fans, can be seen below:

Aston Villa fans all share similar thoughts on Tyrone Mings after England win

[ad_pod ]

England continued their fine form with yet another victory in the Euro 2020 qualification stage, but it wasn’t without its nervy moments.

Michael Keane’s blunder in the first minute gifted Kosovo the lead before Gareth Southgate’s men hit back with five more without reply.

The visitors wormed their way back into the match with two quick goals after the break including a penalty which was conceded by Manchester United’s £80m man Harry Maguire.

Harry Kane then missed a penalty of his own, keeping the game at 5-3.

Allowing three goals against a side of Kosovo’s nature is far from ideal and it has led to several Villa fans wondering why their star man, Tyrone Mings, wasn’t involved especially after defensive mistakes costing England a possible clean sheet.

The 26-year-old was called up by Southgate for the very first time last week but didn’t feature in either qualifier.

One supporter claimed that Mings would have been the best central defender on the pitch if he had played while another added that the 6 foot 5 Villa star is worth £80bn based on Maguire’s poor performance.

A further member of the Villa Park faithful blasted the decision to call him up by labelling it as a ‘waste.’

[Image] – Eden Hazard makes his competitive debut for Real Madrid

It has been a long journey for Eden Hazard but he’s finally made it.

Finally, he can feel the grass of the Santiago Bernabeu and don the white kit of Real Madrid.

Real struck a deal that could be worth as much as £150m and secured their biggest piece of business for the 2019 summer transfer window.

But even though he was theirs relatively early in the window, and even though he took part in all of their pre-season games prior to the new 2019/20 La Liga campaign, it wasn’t until matchday four that Hazard actually made his official competitive debut for Los Blancos under Zinedine Zidane.

And then – right on the hour mark during the game against Levante with the home team 3-1 up and the entire Santiago Bernabeu holding their breath – out came Casemiro and in came the Belgian superstar.

There it was – the image many fans have been eagerly waiting for – Hazard entering the pitch.

Even though the fans saw him play during the pre-season, they still had to wait a couple of weeks to see him make his competitive debut in La Liga.

But he’s here now, and his first official game as one of the Galacticos was a narrow 3-2 win over a courageous Levante.

The Belgian, however, did pretty well and he certainly showed glimpses of what he can and will inevitably do for Real Madrid.

He registered two shots, both on target, one key pass, 90% passing accuracy and tallied one dribble in just over 30 minutes played.

Not a bad start by any means. Of course, his team will expect him to do more as time goes on.

After all, his price tag demands it, his name demands it and at the end of the day, he will probably demand it from himself, having finally taken his first official steps as a Real player.

It all started with this game. Let’s see how it unfolds.

Favourites and contenders for the 2019/20 Champions League from the Premier League

The 2019/20 Champions League is now underway, with a number of prominent clubs emerging from their respective spheres of domestic success in an attempt to collect Europe’s most prestigious accolade in club competition.

After falling fractionally short in 2018, Liverpool rose to the task in Madrid and were crowned Champions of Europe for the sixth time in their illustrious history, whilst also earning the first silverware of the Jurgen Klopp era on Merseyside.

After a season that saw four English clubs in the quarter-final stages, there can be no doubting that Premier League sides are likely to be at the forefront of competing for the 2020 Champions League title.

But which sides could emerge victorious in this year’s final in Istanbul and who could win you some cool cash? Of course, that’s provided you use one of the best online gambling websites in the UK.

Manchester City

Pep Guardiola’s imperious Manchester City have excelled during the Spaniard’s tenure in domestic competitions, consecutively winning Premier League titles, yet the Champions League remains a jewel that is yet to find its way into the crown of their Emirati owners.

Understandably, the Citizens are favourites to lift the 2020 Champions League for the first time in their history, but Guardiola will have to ensure that injuries to key players such as Aymeric Laporte do not disrupt their bid to write history. Veteran striker Sergio Aguero has started the league season in fine form, scoring a total of seven goals and at least one in every league game so far in 2019/20.

The Citizens will aim to transfer their exceptional domestic success into their exploits on the continent, but given the depth and sheer quality of Guardiola’s squad, it is unsurprising they are leading the way as front-runners for Europe’s premier club competition.

Liverpool

Despite a 100% winning start to their domestic campaign, Klopp’s Liverpool came unstuck at the hands of Napoli on Tuesday night in a 2-0 defeat.

Worryingly for the Reds, they fielded a first-choice XI in Naples, but for the reigning Champions this could arguably be a well-timed wake-up call as to the size of the task they are facing in retaining their title. The eclectic front-three of Mohamed Salah, Saido Mane and Roberto Firmino will aim to propel the Reds towards the top of group E, with attractive fixtures against Red Bull Salzburg and Genk to come later in the group stage.

Liverpool will be aiming to reach the last-16 and then charge to a third consecutive Champions League final, as they aim to make it seven European trophies and a second under Klopp.

Tottenham Hotspur

Last season, Mauricio Pochettino and Spurs reached the Champions League final for the first time in the club’s history. Despite losing to Liverpool in a tense final in Madrid, the transformation of the Lilywhites from frail domestic competitors to having considerable European pedigree is testament to the job their Argentinian boss has done in north London.

Having learnt from their previous shortcomings alongside the experience gained from reaching the final, it would be unwise to rule out a Spurs side featuring the likes of Harry Kane, Heung-min Son and Christian Eriksen from making another deep run into the Champions League knock-outs.

Man City’s Fernandinho raises worrying concern about playing at centre-back

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

As quoted by The Manchester Evening News, Fernandinho has raised a worrying concern about having to play at centre-back for Manchester City.

What did he say?

The Brazil international has been used as a make-shift centre-back in recent weeks following the long-term injury suffered by Aymeric Laporte.

The veteran midfielder shone in his unfamiliar position against Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League last week, before helping keep a second consecutive clean sheet in the 8-0 thrashing of Watford in the Premier League.

However, Fernandinho has insisted tougher tests lay ahead, and questioned whether he would be up to the task when opposition teams take the game to City.

He said: “I’m still in an adaptation process. It’s something new for me although I have known since the end of last season that playing as a centre back was a possibility.

“I’ve started training it from the beginning of this season so it’s still new, but I’m trying to learn from that experience. The way we play makes it a bit easier because we keep the ball with us most minutes. Against Shakhtar, they barely attacked behind our four-man defensive line and kept the ball mostly around the halfway line.

“But when an opponent attacks more through crosses or behind-the-line runs let’s see how I’m going to perform. I’m here to help so that’s fine. As for the future, we will see what happens. It’s better to think about now.”

Ominous

When City dominate teams – a quite regular occurrence – Fernandinho’s presence at centre-back is perhaps not as damaging to Pep Guardiola’s side. There can even be an argument that his qualities with the ball at his feet may be an advantage to the Citizens.

But when the Etihad outfit next come up against a so-called ‘big team’, it really will be fascinating to see whether the Brazilian can cope with the greater defensive demands. City’s next test against one of the Premier League’s ‘big six’ comes when they take on Liverpool at Anfield on November 10 – a potentially title-defining clash.

Watch how to cross the road like a boss with freestyler Ben Nuttall in the video below…

Coming up against the likes of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino will truly establish whether Fernandinho is capable of making this transition into a bona-fide centre-back.

Leeds’ Tyler Roberts could be the missing piece of the jigsaw

If you were an outsider looking in, you’d be forgiven for assuming Leeds had started the season terribly, judging by some of the fan reaction.

After defeat against Charlton, supporters called out Marcelo Bielsa’s tactics but that was also the case after a draw with Derby.

Football fans can grow restless quickly but that is the cut-throat nature of football.

The Whites may only have won once at home all season and taken victory from one of their last four matches but they still sit three points off top spot.

It’s been a productive start but they could be doing better – that’s particularly the case going forward.

The constant barrage of Jack Harrison won’t stop. He was targeted by the Leeds faithful last weekend despite completing two accurate crosses, something that doubled his tally in that department for the season.

So far, he has managed just three accurate balls into the box from 37 attempts.

Why are Leeds fans the best in the country? Find out in the video below…

Leeds are also one of the worst teams in terms of their conversion. They amass the highest rate of shots per game at 17.7, which is two more than West Brom – their unbeaten opponents tonight.

They have scored four fewer goals but whoever comes out on top in that game will make a huge statement about their promotion hopes.

If the Whites lose they’ll find themselves even further behind the pack but three points would be huge.

What can they do to improve matters? Having Tyler Roberts back could definitely help.

The creative midfielder returned from an injury that saw him have fluid drained from his knee over the summer and returned to the fold at The Valley.

He came off the bench against the Addicks and now a year older, he could be one part of the jigsaw that’s currently missing from the Leeds XI.

Mateusz Klich is yet to discover the form he showed in 2018/19 and has netted just twice in all competitions but it’s the players beside him that have failed to conjure up much creativity or goal threat.

Adam Forshaw came close at the weekend but hasn’t scored in the league since 2015/16. Jamie Shackleton is yet to score a senior goal either.

Roberts is a player capable of playing anywhere across the attacking line, initially making his name as a centre-forward.

However, it’s in a wide role and, in particular, directly behind the striker that he’s broken through at Leeds.

He became somewhat of a key player towards the back end of last season and boasted some impressive numbers per game.

He may not have netted too often but eight goal involvements from just 20 starts is something promising to build upon.

Had he not missed the start of the campaign it’s likely he would have played a substantial role and, with Forshaw set to miss the game against Slaven Bilic’s highflyers, Roberts is someone who could well come in and start.

After all, Shackleton was sacrificed at half time last Saturday. Clearly Bielsa wasn’t happy.

It might be that Roberts is now the player to come in and the 20-year-old could add some extra fire and spice to their forward line that’s missing.

He was able to do that last term, specifically against Preston but also against West Brom.

Roberts caused them a host of problems at Elland Road last season by claiming two assists. The omens certainly bode well heading into the exact same fixture on Tuesday.

Lest we forget, Albion are the team he used to play for. An extra incentive will be there for the Welshman this week but as the season progresses, he can become a key man and one of the emerging talents at Thorp Arch.

Roberts became a bit of a favourite under Bielsa in the second half of last season, failing to miss a single game from mid-January until a clash against Ipswich on the final day.

The youngster has a dynamic nature about him that could solve some underlying issues. Leeds aren’t particularly having too much joy from wide areas consider Harrison has failed to muster a single assist so perhaps targeting central areas is the way to go.

Something has to change if Leeds want to start improving their results and that starts with extra creativity and an added goal threat.

The fact Roberts only scored three goals in 2018/19 shouldn’t be overlooked. He’s still young and Bielsa has proven he gives chances to up and coming players if they are good enough.

Whether he is the missing piece remains to be seen but there’s certainly a case to be had.

If he can find his feet, Leeds’ promotion hopes will definitely be boosted judging by what’s gone before this season.
