Everton fans react as Paulo Fonseca leads Shakhtar to Champions League last 16

Rejected Everton managerial target Paulo Fonseca led Shakhtar Donetsk to the last 16 of the Champions League as they beat Manchester City 2-1 at home on Wednesday night, and Toffees fans were quick to have their say on the news.

In a group alongside City and Serie A high-flyers Napoli, the Ukrainian outfit weren’t given a hope of reaching the knockout stages of the competition, and Fonseca even went as far as saying he would dress up as Zorro for a press conference if they did.

That is exactly what happened on Wednesday, and the achievement may come as a blow to the Merseyside outfit, who according to Daily Telegraph writer Matt Law on Twitter turned down the opportunity to interview the 44-year-old before they appointed Sam Allardyce.

Everton supporters took to social media to give their thoughts on Fonseca, and while one said the club “missed a trick there”, another believes they “might still get him in the summer”.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…
